Caxtrinho, the brainchild of
Rio de Janeiro's Black artist
Paulo Vitor Castro, debuted with
Queda Livre/ Free Fall (2024), an album of
dissonant and chaotic rock, pop, samba and bossanova, performed with a cast of creative musicians.
Cria De Bel harks back to the No Wave of the late 1970s.
Branca De Tranca/ White Woman with Braids is a psychedelic Frank Zappa-esque satire.
Papagaio/ Parrot is an ebullient samba-jazz shuffle.
Album standout Queda Livre is a tribal, flute-tinged jam
in the style of
Jethro Tull's prog-rock
with vocals that echo
Iron Butterfly's
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.
The instrumental Vo' Jura/ Grandma Jura is emblematic of the combo's
genre-bending fusion: led by a dancing acoustic guitar but torn apart by loud bursts of simulated horns and frenzied percussion.
The longest song, Merecedores, was composed by percussionist Kau is a more traditional litany that only in the last two minutes gives in to jamming madness.
