Liverpool's collective
Ex-Easter Island Head,
formed by Benjamin Duvall, released
albums of music for tabletop guitars such as
Mallet Guitars One (2010),
Mallet Guitars Two / Music for Moai Hava (2012),
Mallet Guitars Three (2013),
Large Electric Ensemble (2014),
and
Twenty-Two Strings (2016).
Meanwhile, Hunt was also contributing to Outfit, a band formed by his brother Nicholas that released two albums of dream-pop: Performance (2013) and Slowness (2015).
Andrew Hunt also played in Raft of Trash and in the duo Land Trance.
Andrew Hunt finally launched his own solo project, Dialect, with
Gowanus Drifts (2015), a set of 13 instrumental
post-Brian Eno
vignettes
that transform field recordings into
symphonic electronica.
The albums runs the gamut from
the contemplative Sunset Park (In The Dark) to
the poppy and upbeat Waterfront Epiphany.
However, sometimes the music undergoes tactful mutations within a piece.
Wings begins as simple repeated guitar chords but becomes a hypnotic multi-layered piece, a mini-version of Steve Reich's chamber minimalism which segues smoothly into
Coney Island Fog, which initially sounds like something out of Anthony Braxton's saxophone improvisations of the 1970s but then mutates into ominous buzzing noise.
The elegantly undulating alien muzak of Gowanus and
Ghost Of Red Hook represents the friendly side of the album.
Broken Pipes is the other side, the dark ambient side.
Advanced Myth
Loose BloomsFissures and the wildly dissonant
Thirlmere Wash.
Under ~ Between
The sellout of Atlas of Green (2024) didn't amount to much.
It's a wordless dystopian concept album which would be new-age music if
not for the chronically dislocated melodies.
Hunt indulges in cartoonish effects (Late Fragment is emblematic)
and only occasionally lifts his electronic scores to the dimension of magic:
the pastoral fantasia Atlas Of Green, the guitar adagio Age & Rain...
When the music picks up rhythm, like in
Born Through and Archaic Quarter Form, Dialectic sounds like a poor man's Penguin Cafè Orchestra.
The EP Full Serpent (2026) is an appendix of childish electronic novelties
like Earth Angels of the Bone Age
plus the manic clockwork of Eusa and the meandering
Full Serpent.
Ex-Easter Island Head returned as a quartet (Duvall, Hunt, Benjamin Fair, Jonathan Hering) with Norther (2024).
