John Francis Flynn

Irish folksinger John Francis Flynn rediscovered traditional Irish folk music for the millennial generation. Would Not Live Always (2021), interpreted classics like Shallow Brown and Come My Little Son with just a touch of synthesizer besides the voice and the guitar. His second album Look Over the Wall See the Sky (2023) is a more sophisticated affair, in which Kitty gets delivered by catatonic droning vocals and ends with a noisy instrumental coda, and Willie Crotty is enveloped in creepy otherworldly electronic before intoning a funereal Leonard Cohen-esque chant over icy organ notes. A psychedelic fog seems to blow in and out of the traditional tunes.
