Australian punks Total Control, assembled around
Mikey Young (guitar, keyboards), revived the classic local school of wild
garage-rock with the
four-song EP Total Control (2008) and the singles
Retiree (2009), an anthemic refrain fueled by a
mild punk tempo that is closer to a pow-wow dance,
Paranoid Video (2010) and Pyre Island (2011),
in preparation for the album
Henge Beats (Iron Lung, 2011).
The album spans an impressive number of styles, from the
Suicide-like threnody
See More Glass (easily the standout)
to the syncopated electronic dance ballad The Hammer (easily the nadir),
from One More Tonight, that harkens back to the
pub-rock of
Nick Lowe and
Joe Jackson,
to Stonehenge, a propulsive industrial polka mixed with a sort of pirate song,
from the dark-punk elegy Love Performance
to the one burst of punk fever, No Bibs.
Typical System (2014) is a ridiculous sell-out.
Glass is a disco jam a` la Giorgio Moroder, and
Flesh War is existential synth-pop a` la mode.
Little remains of their punk-rock roots (Systematic Fuck, Two Less Jacks).
