Utah's combo Upcharm, fronted by singer-guitarist Jack Mitchell
with keyboardist William Wagstaff,
guitarist Glenn Livengood,
bassist Bee Zitting and
drummer Levi Ollerton,
debuted with 12-song Upcharm (2018). The songs span a broad range
of styles, from post-rock (the chaotic Out Here and the
somnolent and jazzy Cure for Pain) to
shoegazing (the martial eight-minute ballad Lilt) and
sound collage (Upcharm Goes to Heaven, possibly the standout), and with many creative contradictions:
for example,
the nine-minute Whatever You Want is a hybrid of
Pink Floyd-ian space-funk and jangling REM-ian folk-rock.
