This PAL DVD edition has been produced by Ãsterreichisches Filmmuseum, Vienna, from a high-definition video transfer from a 35mm preservation positive.
The film is presented with a music score composed by Michael Nyman.
A brief supplemental section, Vertov in Blum: Eine Untersuchung, compares the similarities and differences between The Eleventh Year and Im Schatten der Maschine, which contains common footage and has survived in different states. An intriguing possibility is the postulation that Im Schatten der Maschine contains a version of the original ending of The Eleventh Year.
Supplemental material includes a 32-page bilingual booklet, with essays by Barbara Wurm, Thomas Tode, Adelheid Heftberger, Aleksandr Derjabin, Michael Loebenstein and Alexander Horwath, and CD-ROM content, with additional information about Vertovâs âPhrasesâ in Odinnadcatyj, insights into the filmâs intertitles, the âBlum Affair,â and the âDigital Formalismâ Vertov on DVD project.
This high-quality edition is recommended to Vertov enthusiasts, and is currently the only available DVD home video edition of The Eleventh Year. North American collectors will need a region-free PAL DVD player capable of outputting an NTSC-compatible signal to view this edition.
