This Blu-ray Disc edition has been mastered from the 2019 digital restoration supervised by Paramount and conducted by the Library of Congress from an excellent but incomplete 35mm nitrate camera negative and an very-good but incomplete (missing reels 2 and 3) 35mm duplicate negative held by the Library of Congress. Missing footage is represented by film stills and new narrative intertitles sourced from contemporary documents. While digital clean-up and image stabilization has been performed, some sections of the source material display signs of both beginning and advanced nitrate decomposition and significant emulsion scuffing that is difficult if not impossible to eliminate with current image processing tools. A few examples of missed print flaws still managed to get through, but this is such an improvement over previous editions that just about anything may be excused.
The film is accompanied by a fine music score composed, arranged and performed on piano and synthesizer by Donald Sosin. Pleasing work, as always.
Supplemental material includes the D.W. Griffith Biograph short, A Decree of Destiny (1911), with a piano and small ensemble score by Donald Sosin. Another sneak peek at the ongoing FPS project of early Griffith restorations on home video. Compared to other Griffith films on home video, this presentation is a “wow!” as the HD scan has been digitally-cleaned and stabilized rendering excellent results.
This is our recommended home video edition of the film.

This DVD-R edition has been mastered from a VHS videotape copy of an incomplete 16mm reduction print. Dust, speckling, emulsion scrapes, mild frame jitters, vertical scratches, and other print flaws are present. Of course, the results are fairly low-resolution, flat and dark in shadow areas of the picture.
The film is accompanied by a soundtrack compiled from preexisting orchestral music recordings.
