NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN pursuant to Michigan Election Law, Public Act 116 of 1954, section 765a(11) (amended), that the Election Commission for the City of Springfield, with a population of at least 5,000, authorizes the Absent Voter Counting Board be established under subsection (1) to process and tabulate absent voter ballots, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on any of the 8 days before Election Day, beginning on the second Monday before Election Day and ending on the Monday immediately before Election Day. City of Springfield Issues Warning Regarding Rezoning Application Scam
Springfield, Michigan — The City of Springfield is alerting residents and business owners to a fraudulent email recently sent to a local business owner concerning a rezoning application.
The email, which references a matter of public record, is not from the City of Springfield. Officials have confirmed that the message is a scam attempt.

The city of Springfield would like to remind the public of the following:
    The City of Springfield will never require communication exclusively by email.
    The City of Springfield will never request payment by wire transfer.

Official correspondence regarding rezoning applications, permits, and other municipal matters will always be conducted through verified City channels. Payments to the City are processed through established, secure methods and are never requested via wire transfer.
Residents and business owners who receive suspicious communications related to zoning, permits, or city payments are encouraged to contact Springfield City Hall directly before responding or sending funds.

The City of Springfield encourages the community to remain vigilant and report suspected scams to help protect residents and businesses.

The City of Springfield, Michigan is soliciting sealed bids from qualified contractors for the excavation and hauling of plastic waste as part of the blight remediation of 525 N. 24^th Street, Springfield, MI 49037 (Project #: EJ-Impact-0012.)

Work includes, at a minimum, excavation/sorting/loading, sampling/testing as required for disposal approval, hauling, and disposal of shredded and baled plastic waste at an approved Type II landfill, along with required manifests/documentation, site controls (dust/litter/spill prevention), logs, reporting, and final cleanup.

Ron Wells has been appointed to the Springfield City Council, bringing 10 years of residency and strong community involvement. A real estate agent with a marketing degree and graduate coursework in public administration, he has served on the Springfield Planning Commission, the EDC/TIFA/BRA, and the Board of Review. Wells wants to strengthen Springfield’s identity, improve affordability, revitalize areas like the 20th Street corridor. He also supports thoughtful residential growth, practical improvements such as safer crosswalks, and regional partnerships that make sense for residents.

Ride Calhoun recently held informational meetings regarding the community’s new, unified public transit system. The presentation includes updates on new services and infrastructure, and invites residents to learn more about accessible transportation for the county’s future. Watch the presentation.

At its October 6, 2025, meeting, the Springfield City Council approved distribution of the Master Plan.  In addition, the public is invited to review and provide comments on this document. See the draft plan.  A physical copy is also available for review at the Springfield City offices at the Susan L. Anderson Municipal Building, 601 Avenue A, Springfield, MI 49037, or a copy can be mailed to you upon request. Consistent with Michigan Public Act 33 of 2008, as amended (the Michigan Planning Enabling Act), the City of Springfield Planning Commission is providing this notice.

Review Periods
As provided in the MPEA, the Master Plan review period is 63 days. Accordingly, comments must be received by December 9, 2025.

Public Hearing
The Springfield Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the draft Master Plan at the Susan L. Anderson Municipal Building, 601 Avenue A, Springfield, MI 49037 on December 15, 2025, at 7:00pm. All interested persons are invited to attend and offer comments. Written comments may also be submitted in advance using the methods listed above.

The City of Springfield is proud to announce the appointment of Aaron Edlefson as the new city manager, effective May 12, 2025. Following a comprehensive search and selection process, Edlefson was chosen for his extensive experience in leadership and proven dedication to public service.

The City of Battle Creek has identified a drinking water standard violation affecting water customers in Springfield, Impacted customers will receive a letter from the City of Battle Creek's water division later this week or early next week with more information. The letter will also be available on the city’s website,  battlecreekmi.gov.  Quarterly testing from February showed that total trihalomethanes (TTHM) levels in the water system exceed the standard of 80 parts per billion (ppb). This average was calculated over the past 12 months.  The rise in TTHM levels is not an immediate health emergency; you do not need to boil water or take other corrective actions. The City of Battle Creek will notify the public within 24 hours if the situation changes, and the water is no longer safe to drink.    Prolonged exposure to high levels of TTHM over many years may affect the liver, kidneys, or central nervous system, and increase cancer risk. Although no precautions are recommended, if you or a member of your household have a compromised immune system, are an infant, or are elderly, you should consult your healthcare provider.  

This notice is to advise you that construction will commence on or near, March 17, 2025, and will continue throughout this year. The City has contracted with Hoffman Bros Inc. to construct water system improvements, funded through the State of Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). Many of you may be aware of this project through the number of Public Meetings that have been held regarding this project, beginning in May 2023. The project entails water main and service line replacements within the Wyndtree Townhomes neighborhood, Tony Tiger Trail, Barberry Dr, Avenue A, N 20^th St, and Goguac St., as seen in the map below. Construction will be phased and residents in different areas will experience interruptions at varying times throughout this year. See the complete notice.
