Key Trends (from Vanitec and related 2026 reports)
China’s vanadium market is moving from near-total dependence on steel into a dual-demand structure (steel + energy storage). Long-duration energy storage (LDES) is the main growth engine.

Market outlook: Analysts expect the market to move toward a modest deficit later in 2026 or into 2027 as storage demand ramps up alongside any steel recovery. This is supportive for prices after multi-year weakness. Risks include project delays and competition from other long-duration technologies.

- China’s cumulative VFB installed capacity is projected to exceed 8 GWh in 2026, potentially consuming 35,000–40,000 tonnes of V₂O₅ equivalent. This could raise the energy-storage share of domestic vanadium demand from ~20% in 2025 to more than 30% in 2026.
- Large projects are already online or advancing (e.g., 200 MW / 1 GWh systems in Xinjiang and others).
- Steel demand remains the foundation and is expected to stay roughly stable at ~100,000 tonnes in China for 2026, supported by higher-strength rebar standards.
- Supply growth is constrained (China production guided at ~150,000–160,000 tonnes V₂O₅ equivalent in 2026) due to environmental rules, energy controls, and long lead times for new mines. Most supply is concentrated in the Panzhihua–Xichang region.
- Globally, some forecasts see total vanadium demand reaching ~285,000 tonnes by 2027, with energy storage potentially accounting for more than 40%. Longer-term VRFB capacity forecasts show very high growth rates (some project ~30+ GWh globally by the early 2030s in optimistic scenarios).
Market outlook: Analysts expect the market to move toward a modest deficit later in 2026 or into 2027 as storage demand ramps up alongside any steel recovery. This is supportive for prices after multi-year weakness. Risks include project delays and competition from other long-duration technologies.
