Traffic/spending at petrol stations in Spore are currently on a secular decline but it could probably slowly turn around as they slowly convert to pit stops for EV charging + coffee/food. But you definitely need more real estate footprint, or a higher density of services to squeeze into the existing one.

Macrovalue took away DFI Retail's ex gf and now is now back in competition with its 711 convenience format.

Cold Storage moves into convenience retail with On The Go, to replace FairPrice at 58 Esso stations

[SINGAPORE] Cold Storage launched its first Cold Storage On The Go store at the Esso petrol station at 255 East Coast Road on Aug 3, offering ready-to-eat meals such as packaged chicken and sandwiches, as well as beverages, fresh fruit and ice cream.

The supermarket chain is moving into convenience retail with On The Go, which is open 24 hours. It will be rolled out progressively to all 58 Esso petrol stations across Singapore through 2026, replacing FairPrice Group’s convenience stores.

Cold Storage has partnered Aster, which operates Esso’s fuel retail network here, to offer convenience meals, bakery products, snacks like bao and curry puffs, and other everyday essentials.

The nationwide roll-out marks the first phase of Cold Storage’s broader push into convenience retail. It plans to introduce standalone On The Go outlets islandwide, building a business complementary to its supermarkets.

Cold Storage Singapore managing director Lim Boon Cheong said the company is eyeing more than 100 outlets in total, having already secured new sites beyond petrol stations.

Cold Storage Singapore’s move into convenience retail comes after Malaysia supermarket operator Macrovalue acquired all 49 Cold Storage stores and 38 Giant stores in Singapore from Hong Kong-based DFI Retail Group for S$125 million in March 2025.

Macrovalue managing director and co-founder Gary Yap said the move into convenience retail will help Cold Storage grow in Singapore, as smaller outlets are easier to expand than full-sized supermarkets.

He added that there is growing customer demand for convenience and that the company wants to refresh the convenience-store format with a less cluttered look, stocked with fresh food and in-house brands.

This marks Macrovalue’s first move to expand Cold Storage since acquiring the chain in 2025.

Lim said Aster had approached Cold Storage for a fresh convenience store option at Esso stations.

A DBS research piece offering more clues to the Maxims-Starbucks deal after talking to DFI Retail Mgt.

I am nonetheless perplexed by the "low free float of 22%" been a hindrance to institutional demand or sustained valuation re-rating...In general, no one complains about "low free float" when it acts as a tailwind for the share price rising as optimists bid up the prices from limited sellers. But when share price isn't rising, it is conveniently been blamed...

DFI Retail: Confidence In Executing And Delivering

Management highlighted that Starbucks is the fastest-growing and most resilient business within Maxim’s, with exposure to favourable long-term consumer trends. In contrast, mooncakes face structural decline, Chinese restaurants are under pressure, and Japanese restaurant concepts could see demand volatility during periods of heightened Japan-China tensions.

In addition, Maxim’s lacks the financial capacity to acquire the entire business.

Management noted that Starbucks currently operates largely as a standalone business, limiting synergies with DFI Retail’s existing operations. The more readily achievable synergies are primarily cost-related, including rental negotiations, capex efficiencies and procurement savings for raw materials such as milk, cups and other operating supplies.

While investors appear concerned about a potential stake sale by Jardine Matheson (SGX:J36), we share management’s view that increasing the current free float is necessary to broaden access to larger institutional investors and in turn support a sustained valuation re-rating. In addition, we believe it is unlikely to materialise in the short term and at current price. If any, it will be at much higher price and be in the form of any organised sale instead of open market.
