Happy 13th & 19th Birthdays!

We really enjoy reading Tanner's extensive weekly emails.  It helps us feel a part of what's going on in the Pittsburg, PA mission.  This past week he shared how surprised he was to open the local paper and find a picture of himself (with his full name) next to an article about the Veteran's Place where he and his companion served during the Thanksgiving season.  Tanner also happened to be in a youtube video about this B.O.B Veteran's Place Tiny House project and Aaron found another photo-op picture on FB recently.  Obviously, it's not about Tanner but it's neat to see how the Lord uses many avenues for getting the name of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints into the media.
And while I personally don't use FB, Aaron is good to post tidbits about his missionary son since he has many non-member friends that follow him.  Here's a screen shot of Aaron's birthday wishes for Tanner (even though Tanner can't view FB).  It's all about sharing the gospel!
Yesterday morning I woke up to a text message from a member family in the Penn Hills area that had Tanner and his companion over to make gingerbread houses and "celebrate" Tanner's birthday with dairy-free egg nog on Friday night - December 16th.  I felt so grateful that there are such wonderful people in the Pittsburgh, PA area looking out for our now 19 year old son!  Wow - we watched home videos of his 3rd birthday today...time flies.  Happy 19th Elder!  You'll read this in 20 months....
Saturday morning - Anna was up earlier than usual for a weekend.  She's been pretty darn excited about her birthday this year.  Elsie was sweet and wanted to surprise Anna and make 'white' pancakes for her breakfast.  Afterwards, Anna selected one gift to open and waited until later in the day to open the others.

The traditional breakfast with Dad turned into lunch with Dad this year.  Subway was it!

Payton, Aubrey, Anna
It's a no party year but Anna did have two friends over to 'celebrate' in a typical teenage sort of way.  When Jantzen returned from playing in two basketball games, Aaron had to take him to clean the HCP office.  These girls decided to tag along so they could stop at the store to buy fake nails (of course!).  They spent time creating masterpieces with these nails, eating yummy food, having a hot cocoa bar, singing happy birthday, eating cake and ice cream and watching the movie "Miracles from Heaven" before the night was over.  Anna enjoyed her special day immensely.  And now we have another teenager in the house!
Sunday clothes, shoes/boots, backpack, dry erase and fine-tip sharpies.
Thanks to both sets of G-parents for extra cash!
Birthday dinner - ravioli!
We love Anna and her enthusiasm for life.  She is a spark of sunshine and her love is infectious!
Quinn - indoor soccer team
The elementary school hosted a "Festival of Trees" on Thursday evening.  The children decorated individual paper trees and each class selected a theme for which they also decorated a real tree.  The students learned various Christmas songs which were recorded earlier in the week so we could view them from a big-screen TV in the foyer.  There were cookies and punch in the gym along with Santa.  We didn't stick around for long because Brinley was also playing in the MHS Music Department's Christmas Concert.  It's my favorite one of the year with the band, choirs and orchestras combined.  The finale always brings me to tears because the music is SO incredible.  I may not be able to attend the Mormon Tabernacle Christmas program but I sure treasure what I can attend.  Well done Brinley! Somehow she and her friends also managed to get tickets for the newly released Star Wars movie later that night.
It was a dress-up like Rudolph day and Elsie's nose shows remnants of that.

Here's the waterfall near the entrance of our neighborhood.  Poor Aaron has spent a lot of time plowing our driveway this past week.  I shoveled the front walks at least four times on Friday.  We received over a foot of snow.  And the high temperature yesterday was -2 degrees!?!  With all the snow, our mudroom area has been wet and cluttered with snow gear.  As the kids were getting ready to deliver our 12 Days of Christmas gift on Wednesday evening, Elsie slipped and hit her head on our granite top bench.  Aaron walked in the door from picking up Jantzen from basketball try-outs just in time to drive Elsie back into town.  Fortunately, the Community Care was still open at 8:45pm and Elsie got a staple in her forehead rather than stitches for less scarring.  She was a trooper!
Jantzen - center front row with black knee pads
Jantzen's basketball journey with Coach Merrill has been three years in the making.  It's been an interesting experience.  After a full week of try-outs, we found out Friday night that Jantzen made the 8th grade basketball team for MJH and will now transition to Coach Wilson.  This will be a very different experience for these boys.  Most of them have been playing together for several years and Jantzen's entire team is now the 8th grade team plus 3 additional players.  We find out more in a parent meeting tomorrow...

Holiday Happenings

Breanna, Brinley, Anna, Heather, Elsie on floor
We always look forward to listening to the First Presidency's Christmas Devotional the first Sunday in December.  We also celebrated Jagger's 5th birthday last Sunday - so there were plenty of little (noisy) cousins around as we watched together at Bob & Janene's house.
Quinn - listening to Christmas messages

Anna & Brinley - entertained by the 'bears'
Quinn's first indoor soccer season is ending with his final game this coming Tuesday.  Good times!

Taylor, Kaylee & JC, Janelle & Chris
Thursday evening we hosted the annual HCP Christmas Party at our home with just office staff and their spouses (35-40 people).  It was the first year we haven't included the SRC associates so perhaps the old-timers felt left out (?) but moving it off site as we've done the past few years to accommodate the large crowd wasn't feasible.  It made this year's gathering feel so relaxed and simple!
Sara & Dee
Heather, Debbie & Erik, Doug & Kailee, Jen & Kire, Lainee & Mitchell
We ordered pulled-pork/buns, coleslaw and macaroni and cheese from The Hickory Restaurant then had people bring salads or desserts.  The traditional white elephant game was played and everyone had a fun evening - even with the snowy, slick roads outside!

Friday evening Aaron and I took Quinn and Elsie to a (free) Christmas concert featuring BYU-I's jazz band and vocal ensemble group.  These college students are so talented!
The show was geared for a younger audience and included appearances made by The Grinch, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman and Santa Claus.  Quinn and Elsie loved it when elves walked through the aisles throwing out candy.  They even marched in a jingle bell parade and sat on Santa's lap before the evening was over.  Right away Quinn noticed the dark eye-brows and made a comment later to me that this could NOT be the real Santa.
The children are currently delivering neighbor gifts and spreading cheer to others.  It will be another fun-filled holiday week ahead.  We chose to do the 12 Days of Christmas this year to a couple of missionaries we know serving in the Pittsburg, PA mission!  Shhh...it's our secret.  SO fun.

Ringing in the Season!

This holiday season we are focusing on the #LighttheWorld Christmas initiative.  Each morning we discuss what's on the calendar for that day and how we can be more like Jesus - 25 ways in 25 days.  At the end of the day, the children have the opportunity to report back to us.  This past weekend Jantzen, Brinley and Anna were able to assist with performing baptisms for ancestors (29 males, 30 females) so they certainly fulfilled their responsibilities for 'honoring parents'.  We know Tanner is busy helping spread the good news of the gospel this season and we want to do our part.
To kick off our holiday season we attended the 25th Anniversary Tour of Michael McClean's "The Forgotten Carols" on Monday (FHE activity).  It's the first time this show has come to our town and both shows were performed for sell-out crowds.  The singers (besides McClean himself) were so amazing!  It helped put (most of) us in the Christmas spirit for this month of December.

Elsie had fun making a beautiful Christmas ornament at Activity Days this past week.
Elsie was all about putting the star at the top of the tree.
Friday evening was our ward Christmas dinner and program.  The primary children performed a nativity of sorts and sang carols.  Quinn was one of the "Wisemen" and Elsie was an angel and held the letter "H" as part of the Merry Christmas message.  We had soups in bread bowls and various salads and desserts.  After singing a few songs we had to skip out early for a basketball game.
Wisemen and Angel
I still cannot remember why I didn't attempt to order tickets for the David Archuleta Christmas concert before they were completely sold out?!?  Fortunately for Brinley, her friend Aubrey had a sister that couldn't come at the last minute so Brinley was able to attend the incredible concert Saturday night.  It was the first time in the short history of the BYU-I Center for a performer to sell out the 15,000 seat venue!  I was really sad to have missed such an incredible show - and have heard rave reviews all day from those that went.  When David comes back, I'll be ready:).

In other news, our ward has witnessed many mighty miracles these past 5 months as a young father has been battling cancer since his diagnoses in July.  His wife gave birth to their fourth child just a few weeks ago and he was able to give his newborn daughter a name and blessing before he passed away.  After spending time in SL for extensive treatments, the chemo failed and Damien was sent home Thursday afternoon on hospice.  Through a series of events (guidance of the spirit), Aaron was able to take a shift 10pm-1am assisting Damien and holding his hand to calm him as he became agitated.  Another lady in our ward took care of the 3-week old baby girl so the mother could try and get some sleep  The 3 other children (5 yr and under) were sleeping at the home of another family where they had been cared for for nearly 3 weeks so Cassie and newborn could be in UT with Damien.  The veil was thin and the hours full of sacred contemplation for Aaron and he thought of how this baby had just left our Heavenly Father's presence and how her father was about to return to it.  Nearly 15 hours after Aaron's shift ended, Damien peacefully passed away with his wife by his side (Friday afternoon).  Our entire ward (and beyond) has rallied and supported this little family in ways I could scarcely believe.  I have witnessed the Lord's hand expressed through others time and again and it has humbled me to recognize how much He loves this family and all of us.  My mind has raced through various scenarios and thought a lot about this situation.  In the end, Cassie will be okay because she has a strong testimony of the gospel plan and trusts the Lord will guide her in what comes next.  The journey will not be easy and I'm sure we will continue to have opportunities to serve but through the process, something changes inside our own hearts and we become a little more like our Savior.

I Am Thankful For....

Wrapping up the month of November reminds me that I am thankful for so many things.  I think Quinn summed it up well in this recent school assignment he brought home.
"I am thankful for friends because they are nice to me and I would be lonely.  Next thing is my family because they keep me safe.  I would just have like nothing.  I would hate it.  Next is my food and water because I would be dead right now.  Something really important to me is Jesus.  I love Him.  If He would not be alive, I would not be alive.  Something that I love and....
"I live on is the universe.  It is pretty and I love it.  Something else is my house.  If I did not have a house I would be poor and I would be suffering."  Love this!
The kids were out of school on Wednesday (before Thanksgiving) and Aaron returned home from a month of traveling so we took advantage of the "day off" and went Christmas tree hunting before out-of-town family arrived.  We left sunny blue skies at home and arrived to find a snow storm kicking up.  Because there was so little snow on the ground when we first arrived, we were able to hike higher up the mountainside than usual.  In the end, the tree we cut down was probably one of the first we spotted.  Ha!  We had plenty of adventures searching for the 'perfect' tree.
Anna named this tree "Melinda" after her YW leader.
(This is not the tree we ended up selecting).

We carried the tree down the mountainside since we forgot the sled (wouldn't have been that helpful anyway) and conveniently put it in the back of the truck.  Wow!  That was a first.  Usually we have to secure it to the top of the Yukon but not this year.  It was SO much easier this time around....
The kids decided to quickly decorate our beautiful pine-scented tree before G-ma and G-ma P arrived along with Tiffany, Shawn & Abigail.  Adam and Hilary's clan also arrived in time for everyone to have a light supper of soup/rolls since we knew the big feast was just around the corner.

We enjoyed listening to stories about G-ma and G-pa P's recent 21-day cruise where they visited a few countries including Italy, Greece, Cypress, Oman, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Israel, Suez Canal, Jordan and Sicily.  Still recovering from jet-lag, the 'party' ended earlier than usual so we could get some sleep before heading to Brent & Kathy's place the next morning.
Aaron & Anna peeling potatoes in Kathy's kitchen
Cassidy with mom, Larah L. - snacking
Awkward hug from Aaron to Hilary & Adam (roll-maker)
Hilary, Kristen, Tiffany, Heather - kitchen pose
Quinn & Jameson - crafts/kids playing in the garage
Jenna, Cassidy, Anna, Abigail, Brinley, Oakley - cousins
Shawn, Britton, Jantzen, Aaron - watching football
Anna & Brinley - chow time!
It always is a tasty feast!  And I'm sure this is Aaron's plate since he makes it look so nice:).
Chocolates for later - mailed a box to Tanner.  He was really happy to receive them!
Steve & Kristen family group shot
Jeff, Jake, Logan, Dustin - brothers
Brent and Kathy had every member of their family in attendance so they took some family pictures (I don't have one).  I can only recall one other year where all four of my Lewis cousins were together for Thanksgiving.  We enjoyed catching up with those we don't see very often.
Plenty of talking/eating all day
For the first time in over a decade (or two), we didn't go bowling!  Apparently, there is a new owner of the bowling alley and he doesn't open up on Thanksgiving Day (imagine that?).  Instead, Dad took Tiffany, Hilary, Mom and me on a family history tour down memory lane and through town.  I had seen some of these places before but not all at the same time so it was really helpful to put timeframes into context better.  Hilary recorded some of the information on her phone (thank goodness) but I can recall a little bit of the history.
Parley Preston Price's homestead
We drove by the Wapello elementary school (no pic) but the original school Dad attended is no longer standing.  The land where it stood is now part of the baseball field.  He also showed us the nearby LDS church where he could go for Primary classes once a week with most of the other children from school.  Years ago, primary was held after school and not on Sundays.  When Dad's family moved from Wapello and into town (Blackfoot) around age 8 (3rd grade), he no longer attended primary on a regular basis.  Dad recalled occasionally riding a pony to school along the railroad tracks that run along the old Yellowstone Highway.  Other children did the same.  They would hitch up their animals to posts near the school.  Most days, Dad would take a bus to school but had to walk quite a distance down a dirt road (once lined with trees) from his grandpa's homestead.  He recalled just how bitter cold the winter mornings were while waiting for the bus to come. Dad would walk the lane along with his cousins who lived in the nicer, larger home on the property (pictured).  The chicken coop on the land was turned into a house where Bill & June (my grandparents) lived and raised Steve & Kathy until moving into town.  The larger home was 'given' to Bill's older brother, Preston (went by Duber) then sold by Pa (Parley Preston Price) when Duber moved his family to Mackay.  These two brothers (Bill & Duber) had an interesting relationship and partnered in several business situations though Bill didn't come out ahead from them (unlike Duber).  Regardless, Bill was a loyal brother and seemed to 'forgive' Duber time and again.  Someday we'll get the real stories...
Home on Archer Street in town
Leaving the farm and moving to town was a big change for Dad's family.  This white house has been added on to a few times but from the angled front door, that square represents the original house my Dad lived in from ages 8-12.  When Dad was in the 7th grade, the family moved to the house on University Avenue where they lived until Dad left for his mission to Germany at age 19.
Not far from where my Dad lived on Archer, my Mom grew up in this house on Ash Street.  Her Dad (Bob Kerr) made several additions to the home and always seemed to have a project in the works.  This was a lovely home in its day and unique due to Bob's ambition and Aloha's vision.  They raised their own five children (Steve, Kristen, Greg, Kathy, Jackie) in this home until building a larger home on Airport Road across town.  My mother was in the 8th grade when she moved into the custom-built brown home on Airport Road and lived there until she went away to college at BYU (Provo).
This church building has also been added on to but the stain-glass windows seen from the road are part of the original building.  Interesting to note is the fact that my parents were actually in the same ward for several years but never met each other because my Dad's family was not active in church.  Thanks to a diligent home teacher, my Dad was baptized (in the old tabernacle) at the age of 10.  Mom knew nothing about his baptism though they would have been in primary together had Dad attended.  Their paths did not cross until high school and by then, my Mom had moved from Ash Street and they were no longer in the same ward.
After the family history tour, we returned to Brent & Kathy's for the traditional pinatas.  Kids lined up from youngest to oldest to take their swings.  It took the younger kids a few rounds before finally breaking their piñata open.  The line-up for the older kids was a different experience.  Fourth in the line-up, Jantzen never did get a chance to swing. That piñata burst open quickly!
After pie and chocolates, a few Black Friday shoppers headed out.  The P clan eventually made their way back to our house where they spent the night.  The following morning, the older cousins attempted to perform baptisms at the temple but changed plans and went to breakfast since there was a 3-hour wait.  Cousins played, we power-walked the neighborhood a few times, I foot-zoned, we all ate another round of Thanksgiving yumminess then everybody headed out Friday afternoon.  The roads were clear and the sun was shining!  Always fun when family comes to town.
Elsie, Jenna, Jameson, Korinne, Abigail
Friday evening we joined Aaron's side of the family for more pie and ice cream.  Bonnie & Bryant's family were in town for another day (except Jameson and Garrett left just before we arrived) so we had fun catching up with them.  Cam and his boys have temporarily moved in with Bob & Janene so they, too, were around.  We played "Up & Down" (a card game) and talked and laughed until bedtime.  Aaron, Bryant, Cameron, Jantzen along with Breanna & Derek went to an 11pm movie but the rest of us were smart enough to go to bed:).
Anna & Lillian
Well, okay may not all of us went to bed.  Anna and Lillian stayed up plenty late anticipating a sleep-over at Breanna & Derek's apartment but when the movie ended, the idea didn't materialize.  By Saturday afternoon, extended family had left town and we got back to business.  Aaron sold the kid's beanbags for an amazing price (someone was really lucky) and helped roll them out the door.  They were fun but took up a lot of space.  The kids got the cash so I suppose it was a win-win for all:).
Sunday evening we busted out the rest of the Christmas decorations and the kid's tree for upstairs and turned on the David Archuleta music (tradition).  It was a little melancholy for me not having Tanner around because he always did certain things (like put up the nativity set).  Imagine our surprise when Brinley got out the stockings to hang and found a card inside each one - handwritten by Tanner.  It was so touching and heart-felt it made me cry.  He had written the cards before he left in August and hid them away so it was a complete surprise for all of us.  It was a wonderful evening.

Thank you November.  I love you.
December - you may arrive now.
