Family History

After a Sunday evening discussion about family history and trying to figure out a few things…mom brought out a large box of photos that belong to Grandma and Grandpa Doig.  Monte and I were leaving the next morning so I quickly went through the pics and pulled out the ones I wanted copies of for one reason or another.  There wasn't time for me to get them done but mom sent me a disc with a corresponding whose who sheet.

I love looking at pics from this era…the clothes…the people…the stories they tell.
These are my favorites for one reason or another...

Pearl Ady (12) Ada Ady (20) Ethel Clark
Ada is my dads grandmother and was married to Paul Patterson Doig (my dad's namesake)
I'm not sure who Ethel is and if you look really close behind the hammock there is an unidentified gentleman.

My Grandma and Grandpa Doig walking down the streets of Calgary 1944.
They were married December 31, 1943.  Are they now headed back to duties in the Navy and why is grandma carrying a camera?
The attache case he's carrying is still in the family.

Doig brothers 1958
Paul, Lister and Ron

My dad with his baby sister Shelley 1959

I love this picture of my Grandma and Grandpa Doig sitting on the porch of their home in Calgary…it tells so much about them and their lives.

Paul Patterson Doig is standing beside the carriage on the right.
The 2 gentlemen in the carriage are a mystery but I love the guy resting with his foot up.

Paul Patterson Doig (1887-1941) is the gentleman in the middle…it looks like they are at the fair or race track and possible a judge or contestant because he's got a ribbon on his lapel.  I love their suits and top hats and fedora…the ladies dresses and hats…the parasols…the stadium they're in.

My Grandpa George Doig with his Maternal Grandfather and namesake George Ady(1852-1928)…grandpa's coat, scarf and hat are darling.  It looks like they've had or are preparing for a cold Canadian winter…Grandpa Ady's beard would really help keep him warm.

I learned that Grandpa Doig had a stillborn baby sister who was older then grandpa and his brother Jack…not sure why I didn't know or remember that information.

Grandma and Grandpa Doig served in the Canadian Navy.
Margaret (Peggy) Maley is in the center.

I love this old house and picket fence with trees…unfortunately we have no clue who is in the picture…love how he's posing in the gate.

One of my favorites.  Grandma and Grandpa Doig are on the ends.
I love grandma's hat, dress and red lips…and grandpa in his sailor suit.
They look so handsome and elegant.

Ida and Lister Maley and Family
Taken before my dads sister Shelley was born but I believe it includes everyone in the family at that point.  My dad is sitting on Grandpa Maley's lap…Grandma and Grandpa Doig are sitting on the right with Ron on grandma's lap and Lister on grandpa's.

Shooting & Waterton

We spent a few days enjoying "green" Southern Alberta.
Day 1 was busy…breakfast…lawns mowed…gopher shooting…then off to Waterton for supper.

We rode out to our old stomping grounds and decreased the gopher population.

After shooting all the gophers we could find the guys set up some targets.  If you look close there's 5 guns aimed at the targets.

After we got back to town we headed to Waterton.  It was a beautiful calm day in the mountains.  We had a delicious supper at Trappers.

Our waitress Brittany…she's sure grown up.

My delicious soup.  The soup was beef barley with huckleberries…beyond yummy.
The bowls and plates are super cute.

San Francisco #2

We spent our second day in San Francisco on bikes touring around the north west part of the city.  We were at the bike rentals as soon as it opened which worked out great.
Our first stop was the Golden Gate Bridge then down into a Sausalito a cute ocean side town.

The roads and paths through San Francisco are beautiful.

Thousands of tourists rent bikes daily and ride across the bridge into Sausalito.  It is only a mile or so down into Sausalito…most people spend time walking around then take the ferry back to San Francisco.  Monte and I wanted to ride back across the Golden Gate Bridge then down to Golden Gate Park.  The hill was a little intimidating but not nearly as scary as we thought it was going to be when we were coasting down.

We arrived early…before the "thousands" of other tourists.  We parked our bikes and wandered around.  Knowing we had a lot of biking left we found this delicious cafe for "brunch" to give us strength to peddle back up to the Golden Gate Bridge.

We shared this delicious grilled veggie sandwich.

Headed back across the bridge.  Unfortunately the foot traffic on the bridge was crazy busy but it was fun to ride on the iconic bridge.

Golden Gate Bridge behind us. We're trying to work our way to Golden Gate Park … the hills were crazy.

The Pacific ocean at Ocean Beach across from the Park.  San Francisco is not known for warmth and sunshine.  It didn't get above 70 the whole time we were there which was perfect for biking. The beach is more for watching surfers and bonfires.

Unfortunately we were getting a little tired and hungry by the time we made it to the park…my left ITband gave up about this point…it had climbed too many hills.  We saw some beautiful spots but the park is so large you could spend days trying to see everything.

Working our way back to the Fishermans Warf.

After 7 hours on the bike and a long time since brunch we treated ourselves.

One street North of China Town it turns to North Beach (no beach in site) that is Little Italy.  After walking the day before to Coit tower and seeing the delicious Italian restaurants we decided that was what we wanted for supper.

Our eatery was across from Washington Square…a public park where people come to play and walk their dogs.

Lasagna!

Squash stuffed ravioli Decicious!

Bakery across the way where we picked up desert.

Finished the day people watching at Pier 39.
