Carley Faith Will to Win Award

This year, the Slaton Youth Basketball Association changed the name of the Hustle Award to the Carley Faith Will to Win award.  On the boy’s side, both awards have been named in honor of someone in the community.  On the girls side, both awards given out did not have a namesake or eponym so I suggested that the hustle award could be renamed the Carley Faith Will to Win award because of the way it represents a players will to win (or live in Carley's case) regardless of circumstances beyond the players control.  Obviously all of this could not have been possible without the support of the SYB Board and its President Jerry and Secretary Brendi.  It truly is an honor that the league would allow our family to honor our daughter in this manner.  The recipient for the 1st Annual CFWW Award is a great kid and very smart.  As I summarized below, she really works hard and regardless of her size, she never quits trying.  I was lucky enough to coach her this year and I'm sure she'll continue to improve as she gets older.  Congrats Grace!

Before Carley was born, doctors did not think she would live but a few hours. Carley Faith came out to prove everybody wrong. Despite many complications and obstacles, her will to live gave her a full eleven months here on Earth, where she inspired those around her; her family, her nurses and doctors, and the many other people who came to know of Little Carley Faith. She defied the odds with heart and perseverance. In the spirit of this display of courage and determination, the recipient of the 1st Annual Carley Faith Will to Win award showed these same attributes when playing the game of basketball. This player did everything her coach asked of her, even if it meant playing against what seemed like insurmountable odds. She never complained, hustled on every play, defended much bigger players and many times disrupted the play because of her no quit attitude. We are proud to present this award to Grace.

On top of giving out this award, the Slaton Youth Basketball League donated money to the Children's Miracle Network.

Bittersweet

The place is now empty and all that is left are memories.  I'm really excited that the NICU has a new home but at the same time sad to know that Carley's home will never be the same.  The good thing is that the nurses deserve a better space so that they can continue doing what they do and everyone; patients, families and staff will benefit from the new perks of the new unit.  I'm forever grateful to the nurses that made the old unit a "home" for Carley, (especially "her" corner) and that they continue to remember her, even today.

Ribbon Cutting

Today was the grand opening of the new UMC East Tower that includes the new birthing center and a new state of the art NICU.  Even though the number of beds remains the same, it's more than four times the size of the old one.  Our family was asked to help with the ribbon cutting.  Unfortunatley, I was unable to attend as we had the awards ceremony for the end of the Slaton Youth Basketball season.  We had another special event planned for the ceremony that I'll update later.  Below is a Dr. Perez and Emi, Bailey and Kristal.
