We've seem to be having a bit of bad luck the last few days. Two days ago our dishwasher decided it was tired of doing all of our work for us. In the middle of a cycle, the power suddenly shut off and it has not worked since. Joe took it apart and we think we might have found the problem, but for now we are washing dishes by hand. Yesterday Joe and I decided to run to the store to buy some extra paper products (in order to do as few dishes by hand as possible). When we tried to start the SUV, it was dead. This was not a good sign, since we just got a new battery two weeks ago. We jumped the car, but the alternator or something obviously isn't working because we couldn't get enough power to the car to even put it into gear. None of the power items in the car worked at all. We shut it off and took the small car instead. Sigh. Not good for our empty, post-Christmas wallets.
An hour or two later, we made it home and needed to empty the car of the groceries we had just purchased. Bekah was poopy and things were crazy. As soon as we had finished putting away the groceries, our carbon monoxide detector went off! It was reading about 55 (when it should be 0). We tried resetting it, but it was still detecting CO. Eek. We opened the windows and after about 10 minutes it went back down to 0. I was feeling uncertain if we should do something else, so I searched online to see what proper protocol is in a a situation like that. Of course, it says to leave the house and call the fire department. It was 9:30 at this point and I had just put the kids in bed, so we just called the non-emergency line to the fire department to let them know what had happened and see what they thought. Of course, they immediately demanded that we leave the property and said they were sending people! Eek again! Our family car didn't work, so we called the Nortons to see if they would come pick up the kids. Joe called up to the kids to get their blankets because we had to leave since the firemen were coming. Bekah grabbed her new pillowpet and started running around yelling, "A Fie-O! a Fie-O (a fire! a fire!)" It was kinda funny. We explained that there wasn't a fire but they were going to come to check our house since the CO detector went off.
About five minutes later, the kids were safely in the Nortons car and on their way. About that time, a fire truck, ambulance, and police car all arrived at our house. Definitely a first for the Boyer household. Oh the embarassment. LOL. Our neighbor (member of the bishopric) rushed out to see if we were okay and I wanted to crawl under a rock. About six big burly firemen in full gear rushed into the house with their monitor things to check things out while the head guy stayed outside talking with us. At one point, noticing our BSU flag, he said, "Hmmmmm. Boise State fans, eh?" We nodded and he dryly replied, "I'm a Ute." Hehe (nervous laugh). A little awkward considering we just hammered the Utes a week ago, haha. Later, when another fireman came out to explain stuff to us, the chief said to him..."Did you notice the flag?" He laughed and said, "Oh yes. I made sure Tim noticed it as well, haha" They all laughed. The firemen all eventually made their way outside and said that it was all clear. The alarm was probably triggered from the few minutes that the car was running inside the garage. Unfortunately, they checked out our furnace room and found a bunch of potential hazards. Sigh. They gave us a rundown on the issues (which I really didn't understand) and instructed us to call the gas company. They will come out for free and tell us what we need to get fixed.
By 11, we were all back in bed, grimacing about how messy the kids rooms were when the firemen had to search them, hehe. Around 1am, Bekah woke up vomiting. This was not a pleasant thing for a mother who suffers with anxiety and a house that had a CO alarm a few hours previously. I sat stewing and fretting, unsure what to do. I could take her to the hospital to have her checked out, but then the whole rest of the family would remain sleeping in the house without a car to leave if there was a problem. It might just be a coincidence, but I would hate to take the chance. I searched online, but couldn't really find anything that addressed my situation. The CO monitor was still reading 0 and the house had been cleared just a few hours earlier by the fire department. Finally (a few hours later, haha), I called poison control to ask their opinion. They said that since no one else was throwing up or having any problems that it was probably unrelated. If anyone else started throwing up then I should take them in, but otherwise it was okay. Phew. I went back to bed and we didn't have any other issues in the night.
This morning, Bekah is all better, but we have a dead dishwasher, a dead car, and an unsafe furnace room...and no money. Sometimes it seems like when it rains, it pours! We can hardly wait for our tax return, lol.

I cried at the grocery store today
For the past couple of days, I have been feeling a quite under the weather. Sunday afternoon, my throat suddenly became very sore and I was hit with a fever. On Monday, I debated going to the doctor for a strep test, but was worried that if I went too soon I might get a false negative result. This morning, I woke up and decided I needed to go in. Emma was home from school with pink eye, so I had three kids with me.
I was feeling pretty lousy, but knew that I had to get to the doctor one way or another so I proceeded to try to get the kids dressed. Emma and Caleb were fine (although none of the children ended up wearing socks and I made no attempt to fix little girls' hair). Bekah was another matter. She was in some sort of snit today. She did NOT want to get dressed, she did NOT want to go to the doctor or the store or anywhere else. After screaming and kicking and sitting in time out until she was ready (hehe), Bekah finally consented to put some clothing on.
We made it to the doctor's office. I did not have an appointment, because I was just going for a swab and quick test. If it ends up being positive, they try to squeeze you in for a "real" appointment, and if it is negative, you go home without spending anything. Bekah did not want to get out of the car. :( I pretty much dragged her in. Once she saw the toys (yuck...doctor's office toys...just makes me cringe), she was happy again. Unfortunately, the nurse came right out and was ready to do the test. I think that Bekars was worried that the doctor was going to do something to HER, so she had a cow. I had to drag her again. Through all this, I had a fever, chills, terrible headache, and a completely swollen and painful throat. I just felt so tired. I did the test and we were ushered back to the waiting room, where Bekah and the others were happy with toys and I sat huddled up with my hood on, trying to stay warm.
Five minutes later, they came back with the test results...positive for strep. They took us back into another room where we ended up waiting for 45 more minutes. Any of you who have endured an examination room with three rambunctious non-sick children can understand what a torture this was. Usually the kids are sick, not me, and we play little games (rock paper scissors, thumb wars) or read books. I was simply not up for it. I was freezing (the fever) and totally miserable. Honestly, I laid down on the examination table half the time, and shushed the kids the other half.
After obtaining my prescription, I herded the kiddos out of the doctor's office. Once again, Bekah had a cow. She didn't want to leave unless I carried her, and I just didn't feel like carrying anyone! Once we got out the door, she was mad and ran out into the parking lot and I had to yell (with my very tender throat) for her to stop so she wouldn't get hit by an approaching car. She then had a fit because I had yelled at her and I was so frustrated.
In the car on the way to Smith's to pick up my prescription, Emma and Caleb were CONSTANTLY talking to me. Sometimes you forget how much those little ones chatter and demand a response...well, you forget until your throat is killing you and you really don't want to talk at all. I finally told them that they had to only talk to each other because I was just not feeling well.
I had promised the kids a treat at Smith's if they were good at the doctor's office (yes, I easily give in to bribery when I am feeling sickly), and while Bekah was most decidedly not good at the doctor's office, the others were pretty good so we had to go in the store instead of going through the drive through. As we entered, Bekah wanted one of those special kid cars, but I wasn't going to get a cart at all. You guessed it...another fit by Bekars, right there in the doorway, blocking everyone trying to enter the store. By this point, I felt like dying. I was soooooooo sick. I was sooooooooooooo tired. It had been almost two hours since we left the house and I just wanted my bed. I was completely dragging through the store. I grabbed Bekah off the floor, prayed I wouldn't faint from exhaustion, and headed to the pharmacy.
I got my prescription in and then took the kids to pick a treat while we waited. Not really up for dealing with the ginormous fit that would follow if I refused Bekah a treat for her naughty behavior, I let her pick one. She wanted a KitKat, but refused to let me pay for it. She would not let it go for the life of her. I didn't like that behavior, and made her give it to me. Sigh. Let's just say that she was not happy. She had been in a terrible mood all day, but for her this was the final straw. I dragged her back to the pharmacy, where there was a chair I could sit in while we waited. Bekah proceeded to scream on the floor, as multiple mothers glanced at her with concern, and I ignored her. At that point, I had just had enough. I started to cry. I cried and I cried and I cried, sitting in the pharmacy at Smiths. I cried in an embarrassing way, with those shuddering sobs. Emma and Caleb, and even Bekah, became quite concerned and were suddenly very quiet. The pharmacy was actually very quick (haha...perhaps because we were causing such a scene) and we left.
I got the kids in the car, crying the whole time (which, of course, just made my headache worse). I knew it was time for the kids' lunch, but I just couldn't stand the thought of anything but my bed. I just wanted to lay down and sleep and not be bothered any more. I felt like I was on the verge of a mental breakdown. Through my tears, I cursed my mother for living out of state and Rachel's grandma for dying and having her funeral today (I know, I know...but I was sick and feeling very selfish, hehe). I knew I needed help, so I decided to go by the kids' school and picked all the older, helpful children up. They could babysit while I napped, and I wouldn't have to get the little ones back in the car to pick them up at 3 pm.
Four hours, an antibiotic, four ibuprofen, a bath, and a nap later, I was feeling more like myself. I couldn't even remember why everything seemed so desolate. So tonight I am grateful for medicine that helps me feel better, children who cared for their younger siblings, cleaned up the house, and fixed me some chicken noodle soup. I am also grateful that memory is short, and Bekah is cute once again. :)

Thespians
The kids' charter school does a lot of plays. This fall, Emma and Lizzie participated in a show called "The Naughtiness of Jack." It was a very cute play, the the girls were amazing. :) It is fun to see them on stage. They both did a fantastic job.

Emma Sue has anxiety like her mama. She often needs reassurance from Lizzie at school functions like this.

After the show, we met up with Joe and Hannah (straight from the ER...Hannah poked herself in the eye and needed some medical attention) for some ice cream.

November is a bust!
I didn't post in the whole month of November. Eek. I'm not sure what my sudden aversion to blogging is, but I can't seem to work up the desire to do it. I know I would like to keep blogging, though, because the kids and I love looking back at all the old pictures and stories. It is very common for me to come upon one of the children laughing at old memories. Because of that, I am making a valiant effort to catch up a bit.
We are doing well. The kids are growing up so quickly. I am always bugging Joe for another baby, but he never relents. ;). It is a good thing because I don't REALLY want another child, it is just a bit unnerving now that Bekah a basically a kid, and not a toddler. In January, I am going to have FIVE kids in primary! That is crazy. With me as the music leader and Joe as a primary teacher, that means that our entire family except Ammon will be in primary.
Speaking of Bekah growing up, the other day I came upon her in the kitchen. I guess she had decided to make herself a little snack.

Warming up
Snow! Yay! When Joe woke up and saw all the snow, he turned on some Christmas music for the kids before they got on their heaters. It was very exciting! After we took the big kids to school, the little kids had so much fun playing in the snow! Caleb has always hated the snow...he didn't like getting all cold and yucky. I was so happy that he seemed to finally be old enough to appreciate it. Bekah, of course, has loved the snow since birth, lol. When my older kids were little, I used to complain that I spent an hour getting them dressed for the snow, and then about five minutes after being outside, they would all come back in (leaving another hour of cleaning up all the mess, lol). It was so fun today that the little ones stayed out for nearly an hour! So great. :)
It is kind of a tradition in our house that anytime the kids come in from playing in the snow, Mama makes them hot chocolate. There is nothing like hot chocolate to warm up a little (or a not-so-little) body. :) Here are some pics of Cabers and Bekah with their yummy drinks after playing.

Computer crash and the Waffle Tower

I've been so delinquent on my blogging. I have still been taking pictures, though, and was planning to catch up today. Unfortunately, my computer died a couple of days ago. It will not turn on. Joe has tinkered with it a bit, but I'm afraid it may have kicked the bucket. Sadly I no longer have all those pictures. Oh well. C'est la vie. I may just have to live without pictures from the kids birthdays (including a mean game of the Boyers playing Twister, lol) and other noteworthy events.
Anyway, I'm busy updating the kids computer that Joe has hooked up for me. As I was downloading Picasa Web albums, Caleb was sitting on my lap. On their website, they had a picture of the Eiffel Tower. He pointed at it and said, "Hey Mom, look! It's the Waffle Tower!" LOL
Little kids are so much fun. :)

Grandma and Grandpa Gibbons and Temple Square
Last month, Nana came to deliver us our new car (Spence and Kerri's old one). While she was here, we all went on a fun day trip to visit Grandma and Grandpa Gibbons. The kids were super excited, they LOVE their great-grandparents. :) After we finished, we left Nana to go to the airport, and the kids and I headed over for a quick trip to temple square. We hadn't been in awhile and it was such a beautiful day for it. It was kinda weird not having Bekah in a stroller. After we arrived, the kids kind of scattered! It made my poor anxiety go a little crazy trying to corral all those cute kids by myself. It is awesome not having a baby, though. It really makes these types of outings much easier.

Ammon and Grandpa chat. Ammon had a nice long visit with Grandpa. They talked about life, the future, and the scriptures. They had quite a long debating some scriptural point. I couldn't believe that my baby is old enough to take on Grandpa in a discussion on the scriptures!

My kids love the big painting in the church office building because the feet of Christ appear to follow you.

If you click on this picture, I love the faces of the kids. The older three were super irritated with the younger ones. They were trying to get the water totally still so they could see the temple in the reflection, but the younger kids just couldn't resist the water. I especially love Caleb's face, hehe.
As soon as we got there, Grandma pulled out the toys. :)

Apology poem
I just wanted to type this up because it is so sweet and I don't want to forget it. Hannah and I clash at times over her homework (who doesn't?). After I got upset with her the other day, she wrote me this poem to apologize.
Dear Mom,
I love you so much with all my heart.
I NEVER want you and me to part.
Sometimes when you see me blue,
you know exactly what to do.
I feel so happy when you sing,
it gives me a happy feelING.
I see the way you love and care
and I know I can trust you anywhere.
I'm sorry of how rude I was
because of my homework (trust me, I was a jerk!).
The way you spoil from head to toe
reminds me of a sweet, gentle doe.
I hope you will take my poem apology
because you mean more than the WORLD to me!
I love you, Mom, you're as sweet as can be.
I just hope you will forgive the jerk called me.
I love you, Mom!
Love, Hannah

Hannah Bay Boyer...fifth grade diva :)
You may remember our discussion about the appropriate age to get contacts from a year or so ago. After much begging and pleading, Hannah Bay is now a proud contact-wearer. It did not all go without a hiccup, but she is AMAZING now. :) Having some doctor-phobias, the initial contact fitting appointment didn't go that well. She did not like having people touch her eyes and she was never actually able to get the contacts in at the office. At home, I worked with her for an hour or so and I think we both just ended up frustrated. Hannah threw up her hands and said that she didn't want contacts anymore. This ticked me off (due to the fact that we paid all that money and she had ASSURED me that she would be fine with them). Joe and I decided that we would give her a little motivation and grounded her from playing with her BFFT until she has put them in by herself at least once (not sure if that puts us on "terrible parenting" grounds). The motivation worked, however, and very quickly Hannah learned to put them in by herself. She was sooooooo happy that she did and now has no problem at all! She puts them in almost as fast as I do. I can remember spending an hour or more every day for months trying to figure it out when I was a kid. I guess she's faster than her old mom. :)
Pictures of kids in their new contacts aren't quite as fun as pictures of kids in their new glasses, hehe.
Tim Jr.
Ammon is the sweetest almost-13 year old that you could ever meet. He is generally so helpful and kind (although he is not completely immune from those famous 13 year old hormones, hehe). One area that he cracks me up, though, is with the younger kids. I believe that he thinks he is their third parent. He is constantly taking binkies away or telling kids to get a jacket or whatever. Recently he has become extremely irritated when the kids leave lights on. When I was a kid, my dad would be soooooooooo grumpy if we left lights on in the house. He would grump around the house turning them off and muttering about how much money we were costing him.
Ammon is the EXACT SAME WAY!!! And he isn't even the father, lol! After a few episodes of Ammon getting extremely agitated with the younger kids for leaving the lights on when they left a room, Joe and I sat him down to talk about it. We asked him why it was such a big deal to him when it really didn't affect him that much. He replied, "It DOES affect me! It totally raises our utility bill through the roof!" LOL. Just if you're wondering, no...our 13 year old is not responsible for paying the bills. :) Cute guy. I guess he is just a Tim Jr. in the making. :)

I just had to throw in this picture of my cute boys. I sure love having boys...they are so much fun.

Caught on tape!
As I was browsing pictures today to put up on the blog, I came across this video made by my girls. Sigh. I always knew that when the parents were away, the kids get into mischief, but do they have to VIDEOTAPE it?? That is lemonade, by the way, in Hannah's cup. Grrrrrr.

Boise State!
It is one of my favorite times of year again! I love autumn, when the leaves change colors and the kids need jackets in the mornings. I especially love watching football with my sweetheart on crisp Saturday mornings :) Last week, we received a surprise package in the mail from Nana. It contained a new BSU flag and matching BSU shirts for the whole family!! Our old flag was very sad and faded. The kids were BESIDES themselves with excitement about their new shirts. I think that the little kids wore them nearly every day last week, lol. I had to pry them off of their little bodies to get them washed. :)
Yesterday was the big BSU/Virginia Tech game. With such a huge game on the line, we decided that we needed a way to show our pride. With not many options available to us, all eight of us dressed in our BSU gear and just went to the grocery store together. :) Before we left, though, Joe ran across the street and asked our big BYU fan neighbor if he would take our picture. It was pretty funny. He said he wasn't sure if he was going to be able to complete the distasteful task , especially when his dog kept wanting to lay in front of us, lol. We're sure that Roxy (the dog) must be a closet BSU fan as well.
When at the store with six kids we tend to be a spectacle anyway, but with matching BSU shirts, no one could ignore us, haha. We had quite a few comments, a few questions about the game, and even met up with some other BSU fans lurking about in Utah. The game was awesome, a true thriller. So happy that our Broncos brought home the W!

This shot was from earlier in the week. I happened to notice that all six had their shirts on (again!) and decided to take a picture. :) The kids are so cute about the Broncos. They constantly have to defend them against all the BYU fans here. They catch a lot of flack from their friends about their choice of football team. The sad thing is that both Lizzie and Hannah have mentioned that they have an interest in attending BYU when they grow up. Oh well...

I am proud enough of the Broncos to even put up this nasty picture of me, hehe. Go BSU!

Oh well...

Preschool Scholars
We are now in our second week of school and it is, oh, so quiet around here. I am LOVING it! I'm not sure exactly why it seems sooooo much quieter than last year. Perhaps because Caleb and Bekah are now brave enough to play in the basement and outside. It is seriously amazing. Then the big kids all come in and the chaos resumes. It's probably a good thing they come home because I don't want to get tooooo comfortable with the quiet. :)
Caleb and Bekah have been "homeschooling" preschool this year. They absolutely adore it. They beg me every day for preschool but I only commit to two days per week, hehe. Caleb already knows all his capital and lower case letters/letter sounds and all his numbers, colors, shapes, etc. I don't think he is in dire need of academic stuff and Bekah doesn't go to kindy for three years still so I feel justified in only doing it twice a week. :) Caleb DOES need a lot of work practicing writing. I'm afraid that he may end up having some of the writing issues that Ammon has. I hope not. Anyway, it is super fun and they are great kids to do preschool with. I can't believe that in three short years, I won't have any kids home!! Or that next year when Caleb goes to kindergarten that I will only have Bekars. I'm starting to worry that having only ONE child at home may become quite harder than having a few. Hmmmmm....I'll have to figure that out next year. :)

We also make time for fun. This picture makes me laugh because it is just so...Bekah. She insisted on trying to ride Emma's bike instead of her big wheel. Big wheels are obviously for babies or something. She couldn't push the pedals around the whole way on this bike, so she finally gave up and went back to her own bike.

Here are Cabers and Bekah working diligently on their "homework." They are stinkin' adorable. Oh, also. Do you notice that one is a righty and one is a lefty? We have three lefties in our family...Joe, Emma, and Bekars.

A mother is only as happy as
...her unhappiest child. I read that somewhere and I believe it to be soooooo true. Five of my kids can be as happy and content as can be, but if even one is unhappy in any way, I feel anxious and antsy all the time. With four kids starting a new year of school, at least one was bound to be left a little unhappy. :( Ammon started 8th grade and has nearly every class with his best friend and other good friends in many of his classes as well. He is excited about his courses and seems very content.
Hannah ended up in the same class as her BFFT, Haley. They were crazy excited, of course, although the year has not been without drama already(cue eye roll). Their teacher is very nice and she is loving school.
Surprisingly, it is Lizzie that has a bit of a hard start this year. She is always so easy-going and happy that it hurts to see her sad. She didn't have any of her friends in her class and the teacher was a little stricter than she would like. On the first day of school, she came home, told me she didn't like her class and went to her room to cry. :( She seem to be doing a bit better. We encouraged her to reach out to kids in her class and she has made a few new friends. Lizzie is a lot like me so I know how difficult it can be for her to put herself out there like that. We love her so much and are so proud of her. We're sure things will turn around. P.S. Do you notice her new bangs?
Emma Sue is our girl who struggles with the family anxiety issues, but she did great this year. She is happy with her teacher and her class and has been excited to get up each day. Now, if only she speaks to her teacher before Thanksgiving, we'll say it is a successful year, lol!
My buddies! Last year Caleb was very sad when Emma went to school, but no problems this year. Bekah is finally old enough to be a fun companion. In this picture you can really tell that they are only 20 months apart! Bekah is surely growing up. Caleb and Bekah are doing "homeschool" preschool with Mama and love it.

Oh how I love my sweet children! I often wish I could take their every pain, every sorrow, every sickness, every humiliation, every fear away. I know that it is for their good, but it still pains me to know that they are hurting and I can't fix it. I have to let them work out some of their own problems. Makes me think of how our Heavenly Father must feel watching us.
Got Trash?
Okay, I have cute pictures from the first day of school to post, but I thought this was so weird...
Our garbage man missed our side of the street yesterday! Doesn't that seem so odd? He/She got the OTHER side of the street, but must have forgotten to loop back around and get our side. All of our garbage cans on our side are still out, filled with trash. The other side of the street and the rest of the neighborhood are all fine. So weird. In all my years, I don't ever remember that happening. Garbage men are faithful, like the mailman...rain, sleet, or snow, they are there. Not this time. Has that ever happened to you?

Family Pictures
Okay, this is my last post of the day...promise! Spence and Kerri are moving to Panama for a few years. Since this was our last chance for all of us to be together for awhile, we decided to do a family picture while we were there. It was so fun to see all the family running around and playing in Em's backyard after we were done that I just had to take some pictures of my own. Of course, I ended up with a million. I had so many cute ones that I just had to share. Sorry if this is so uber long!

One of the best things about having a lot of kids is that the older ones are so great with the younger! Addie (eldest) with Ella (youngest)

There was a lot of ball playing (and bubble blowing). Here are James and Ammon going up for the ball

There are some gorgeous girls in this family. :) Emma, Brielle, Addie, Sydney, Lizzie, Hannah, and Bekah

"Best Cousins" Aren't they great? (Hannah stood on a basketball hoop so that she would be taller, haha) Addie...tall and blond, Hannah...short and dark-haired.

After watching all the big boys, Caleb was desperate to play a little football with his dad. He finally got his shot. :)

Good-lookin' women in this family (you can tell we're not professional photographers by the way we didn't split the way we were facing appropriately, haha)!
I kept marveling about all those Burton family members running around. Crazy to think that in 14 short years we have gone from a family of 7 to a family of 30!!
