An Abundance of Friends

So moving is exhausting work! I already said that. And all I really want to do is to sit and read my book, and finish it too. Instead I ordered four bushels of peaches, canned just under 60 jars, froze a bunch, and tried some new recipes. I wonder why I do this to myself, but we will enjoy those peaches for years, maybe, to come. So its worth it... I hope.

Boxes are unpacked. Check.
Decorations are hung. Check.
Peaches. Done. Check.
Practice piano, so I can play prelude. Yeah, check.
Read book. Nope.
Hang out with friends. Check!

If there is one thing we are unfairly blessed with, it is good friends! We almost have too many. But I have decided, a person just can't have too many friends.  So we hang out lots as groups. Church is a social occasion. And we all have a really good time when we are together.

GIRLS NIGHT OUT
I love when it is someone's birthday!

Our kids have great friends too! They have great comradery... Bridger has several best friends. And they are all really nice kids! Parents are nice, kids are nice... I like play dates just as much!
When our backyard first became cool... catching slugs!

DELAWARE BEACH
Everyone was invited. We had an awesome group at the beach! Someone nearby commented on how we really know how to throw a beach party. Here's how you do it, pick a friend to round up all your best friends, and take them somewhere fun.
Sometimes I just do things because the kids like it, and I want the kids to have floods of happy memories. The sand and Devin are not friends, and going to the beach is hard with little people, but it sure made it nice to have such great company while we were busy creating happy memories.
Okay, maybe not our best side, but I'll take Yoga on the beach any day!

Move #7

I got home from Utah late Wednesday night, and Thursday evening the scouts came to moved us. They were an awesome crew! I just wished I had another day to advance the packing first. We moved just a hop and a skip of a quarter mile up the road. So the boys would take a load up, unload, and I would pack like mad until they got back to load up again. They were a blessing to us! Friday I attempted to unpack and put things in their rightful place in our new home, then Saturday we moved in the remainder of our belongings. It was a quick move, largely in thanks to the scouts and the friends we had helping us.

Unpacking, and organizing... That was not so quick, but that is to be expected. The very worst is the kitchen! Honestly, unpacking the kitchen gives me more stress than almost anything else in moving. Organizing dinnerware, pots and pans, and utensils makes me feel OCD. After that is done I breathe better! And, once we got a few decorations up on my wall, I finally could allow myself to relax a little bit.

This move was expected yet entirely unexpected. It was less than a year ago that we moved to Kingstream...

In the beginning, we anticipated being able to live at that house two, three years... We had signed an open ended lease. But our landlady loved that house and she was suddenly ready to move in. So a bit shocked and frustrated, I tried to foster some positivity in looking forward to the next move, though we still weren't sure when the move was to be... Joan has three houses in this neighborhood. She gave the boot to our friends, living in another of her houses, so we could move there. It wasn't until they found a house they could buy that we knew when we would have to start our move too. This move, for us, was not the result of strategic planning or prayerful consideration. Where to move, when to move, it was all out of our hands, that's probably what got me grumbling most.

I would have done things differently had I known our stay in that house would only be a short eleven months. Some things I purchased particularly for that house (like wall vinyl), which I would not have done had I known.  I would not have worried so much about decorating.  I had just hung my gallery wall... I was so proud of that wall! I did it myself too.  I taped paper squares and rectangles, carefully up on the wall, made sure my spacing was accurate and neat, and nailed each object up on my own... perilously planking across the stairs, forget the banister. All in a nights work... a late night... while Devin was sleeping. And I loved that wall. I smiled every time I walked past it.

Moving appears to be the story of our marriage... Seven moves in seven years (five of those was right here in VA). It's exhausting. On the bright side, I have had ample opportunity to sort through and rid our home(s) of junk. You would think that by now I would have the art of moving mastered. However, Devin can tell you, I am not very graceful when it comes to moving. Nothing about moving is fun. It is a lot of work. Each house has its own quarks to work out, Devin's To-Do list is two pages long (note pages), and our furniture will not make it through another move. But still, looking to the bright side, this is our last move (fingers crossed) in Virginia. And, I think, for real this time, we can stay however long we need.

Our new house is the same layout as our last house, which helped ease some discomfort because I knew already where most things would go, but there are some differences. We down-graded from a two car garage to a one car (or 2-motorcycle) garage. We won't be able to play Annie-I-Over the house anymore either. And we left our favorite neighbors behind (but not too far). On the flip side, the new house has better storage space, the wood floor in the kitchen is better at hiding dirt, we have a better yard, and we're on a cul-de-sac.

The house seems to be full of paradox's... expecting the unexpected in terms of when to move, the speed at which we moved yet the never-ending organizing, and my graceless attitude intermingling with feelings of extreme gratitude for our present situation.

Yes, moving was inconvenient. Yes, I had a difficult time keeping the mope out of my voice. Still, we have a great landlady, whom we still really appreciate! We are still in the same great neighborhood, living by our awesome friends, and with a bunch of little people, and one big person, that I love and claim as mine! (And honestly, I think this house is a better fit).

I guess I will now choose gratitude. It suits me better. Besides, I have a new gallery wall to smile at.

A Month of Fun

Hooray for summer! Hooray for sun! And HOORAY for family time!

Spending time in Utah has become a fun tradition for our summers. My kids anticipate the trip for weeks, and each night we would again count down the days until we got to fly away. They beg to go, and constantly I heard, "Mom, when do we get to go to Utah? ... "I wish we could just drive there"... wishing to see Aunts and Uncles, cousins, Grandmas and Grandpas.
Bridger packed his bags three weeks in advance, making it so most of June he wore long sleeved shirts because that's all he had left in his drawer. Myra also packed her own bag about a week early.

Flying with my three munchkins is an overwhelming prospect, so... Mom to the rescue! My mom took Bridger and Myra a few days before I was able to fly out with Sawyer. And she flew all the way back to Virginia with us when it was time to return! So thankful for her! I know I would have sworn off flying if it wasn't for her help.

It was a Sunday and my kids were away, but I was in Virginia. Because getting Sawyer to sit still and be quiet at the same time is basically an impossible task, Relief Society again, had to go on without us. Sawyer and I sneaked outside to Face-time the kids. Apparently the first thing Bridger wanted to do when he woke Sunday morning was to go fishing! Grandpa hooked him up with a pole and a line, and I watched as he let his line in the stream, and almost instantly pulled out a trout! One of his top-favorite memories is going fishing in Grandpa's stream. But that wasn't the only day he fished.

A couple days later, I found a flight to take me to Utah as well (not an easy task)! Burnt yellow grasses, sage brush, and dry heat starkly contrast to the green Virginia landscape I left behind. It always shocks me to realize the truth to the fact that all my teachers tried to tell me before... Utah is a desert! Until leaving and then coming back, I never believed them, and each time coming to that realization again, amazes me every time. But still, I have to cut Utah some slack... no, it does not have the naturally green beauty of Virginia, but it is still pretty! You just have to go off the freeways... something that few travelers ever do. Once one does leave behind the billboard dense roadways, and approach the mountains one finds the rugged, hidden beauty of Utah. Or... for one lucky enough to visit my parents (like me! woot, woot!), then the green landscape which was sought, with carefully manicured lawns and gardens, opens up beside a babbling brook for the viewers enjoyment, and what? ...fresh raspberries? Mmm... just another luxuriating bonus for the senses!

July was the month, Landon's homecoming was the purpose, 4 weeks was the time spent, and much playing was what we did! Fireworks, backyard shindigs, a 5K and 5-miler, pie eating contest, wave runners off the beach, messy challenges, tree-house building, chicken catching, yard games, Tolman's Lake, rodeo, Amy's baby shower, and (my favorite) hanging with family and friends was most of what we did in a nutshell.

We did so many fun things, its no wonder my kids look forward to this trip all year long. We have AMAZING family! Pretty great friends too! Nearly perfect, but just not quite because I missed Devin like crazy. So ready for home I was. Home to Devin, to Virginia, and to another move.
