Devin and Molly go to Ohio

Devin had his first interview for Podiatry school on the 16th. On the 15th, he took off for the airport to catch his flight. He had a layover in Tennessee (note picture of Molly in Memphis) and then he made it to Cleveland (note picture of Molly in Cleveland. Also note her Christmas vest). He stayed the night at a hotel with a free shuttle to and from the airport and the campus, and there were at least 2 other guys who were interviewing staying there too.

The next morning he had his interview, first with a secretary and then with the Dean. One of the first things they told him was that they were looking at him very competitively. Devin said his interviews were very laid back and that he felt comfortable. After his interview, they had lunch in their cafeteria area (he says they have very good food) and then they called him back in.

HE GOT IN! AND WITH A SCHOLARSHIP!!

I am so proud of him! We'll have to see how things go in Arizona and where we end up, but it was a very exciting day (despite the fact that I took the wrong exit when picking him up from the airport). On his way back, he had a layover in Dallas/Fort Worth (unfortunately no pictures of Molly) and landed safely in Salt Lake. Devin says he liked the Cleveland area and that he likes the school; so we will keep you posted.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

We had our first real snow fall on the 6th! We took pictures of the view from our front balcony. I know a lot of people were sad about the snow, but I was very excited. I love snow. Everything is so pretty and calm and quiet when it snows. I think snow is magical. I would have been happy if it had snowed a couple of feet!

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

I love Christmas! It is my favorite holiday, and I believe it is Devin's as well. Everything is so happy and magical and pretty. There is wonderful food, beautiful snow, presents, family & friends to see, and a beautiful Spirit surrounding the celebration of the birth of Our Savior.

As is customary, we put up and decorated our Christmas tree. I acquired this tree my sophomore year in college from Wal Mart, and have been pretty satisfied with it ever since. One of my favorite things now that we're married is putting the tree up together while listening to Christmas music. Devin hands me ornaments and I hang them up. As a finishing touch, Devin has a Lego train that goes around the base of the tree. Not only is this very cool, but it makes Devin happy.

Internet Shaftiness

So from the afternoon of the 4th until the evening of the 13th, we had no internet. As we were approaching finals and finishing papers and projects, this was no good. In fact, it was terrible. At first, we thought maybe it was just us like it had been at the beginning of the school year. However, we talked to some of our friends and none of them had internet either. As it turns out, our complex had changed some of the network connection settings and hadn't informed those of us who have been living here for awhile. Bah! Fortunately for us, when I was on campus checking my facebook I saw that one of our friends in our complex had been able to fix their internet. With the help of the husband, we were able to recover internet usage. Huzzah! Then we had another scare on the 15th when it went out again for at least an hour. Thank goodness everything seems to be working at the moment. Sad to think how dependent on the internet we are now; so it was nice to not waste so much time surfing the web.

Devin has Another Interview!

On Thanksgiving day, Devin got an email from the Arizona Podiatric Medicine Program at Midwestern University in Glendale. He has another interview!! This time, he will be going in January, on the 11th. We've already bought his tickets. Now we're just waiting to hear from the school in Chicago, and they are just waiting on the rest of Devin's Letters of Recommendation. We should potentially know where we'll be for grad school by the end of January! We'll keep you posted on what happens!

Thanksgiving

This year for Thanksgiving we took the train to Reno to see my parents. Neither of us had ever been on a train before, so it was kind of exciting. We caught the train on Tuesday night at about 9:30. Sleeping on a train is definitely not the best way to go, but it's not the worst either. My parents met us at the station in Reno and then took us out to breakfast at IHOP. After running some errands we headed home. Devin had never seen my parents new house, so that was exciting. We spent the next 24 hours shopping, reorganizing the kitchen, watching NCIS, and getting our hair cut (mom & I).

On Thursday, my Uncle Glenn and Aunt Rose Maree and my Grandparents came. My Aunt made sweet potatoes, my grandma made pumpkin pie and rolls, and everything else was assembled in my parents' house. Oh, and I had made an apple pie in my cooking class that I brought with us on the train. We grazed on a relish tray and some cheese ball and crackers for a few hours before the food was ready. Devin played the piano for us. I helped my mom find some of her crystal and glassware that hadn't been unpacked since we left Oregon in 2003. Then we ate! As usual, everything was tasty and wonderful. After eating and clean up, we sat around and chatted, and my dad played the piano. Once we had some pie, it was sadly time for my extended family to leave. We were sad to see them go, but they had to drive back over the Sierra-Nevadas and it was getting dark.

That night we played Careers and watched Galaxy Quest, which Devin had never seen. The next day, we all just took it easy. My dad, Devin, and I all played Munchkin while my mom rested and worked on the Laundry. At 4pm we left for the train again.

On the train, we read books and eventually fell asleep. At 5:30am, we got to Provo and Karly came and picked us up. Then we went home and went to bed!

All in all, it was a nice break, and it was great to see my family again. I only wish we could have stayed longer. Oh well, we'll see them next month for Christmas soon enough!

Here is Molly at the Provo station when we were leaving
And here she is on the train to Reno

MacKenzie is home!!

My friend and roommate for the first three years of college is home from her Church Mission in Mesa, Arizona! Hooray! I can't believe it's already been 18 months. I am so excited to see her next semester! It will be so fun to hang out again. She's been gone the whole time Devin and I have been married, so that should be interesting too. Although it will be strange to have her around and not be my roommate, I'm sure it will still be wonderful. Welcome home MacKenzie!

Oh the Shaftiness of Dishes

We do not have a dishwasher. Now some of you may be thinking, that's not that bad, there are only 2 of you. Well let me just say it is that bad. Perhaps if we did our dishes daily it would not be; but as that is not the case, it is terrible. I believe we don't do our dishes for 3 reasons: 1) If there are only a couple of dishes it seems pointless to do 2) Laziness and lack of motivation and 3) we get too busy to take the time to do dishes once we have a lot of them. Perfect example of this problem: We finally did our dishes last Sunday, with the help of Karly. It took us well over 2 and half hours to do them, washing them constantly. Ridiculous. I have told Devin that no matter where we end up next, I demand and require that we have a dishwasher. And realistically, we need to just do the dishes when there aren't very many of them.

Here is a picture of Devin and Karly finishing the dishes. I needed a break after standing for 2.5 hours.
On a happier note, we made pizza again! We made BBQ Chicken and an All Meat. We finally took a picture of the Meat one so here it is!

Baby Shower!

Don't worry, it's not mine. On the 14th, I hosted a baby shower with the help of my friends Sam (Devin's old roommate Jeremy's wife) and Bethany (Devin and Jeremy's old roommate Brian's wife). The baby shower was for Alisa Sharp (Devin, Jeremy, and Brian's old roommate Chris's wife). She is expecting a little boy on the 10th of December. Hooray for babies! Although it was very stressful to plan and bring about the shower, it was well worth it. We had good food, fun games, and cute decorations. The highlight of my day, that my "Pooh" lemon poppy seed cake turned out well. It took me all morning to decorate and I ran out of time to bathe or change, but I think it was worth it. Also, we (the girls) decided to start having mini craft nights to teach each other the things we know how to do. I'm excited.

Devin has an interview!

Yesterday Devin heard back from his first podiatry school: the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. He has an interview on December 16! Hopefully we'll hear back from the other schools soon and we'll have two more interviews before we know it. Keep your fingers crossed that everything goes well!

A Burrito Twice as Big as Your Face!

On Friday we went to Maria Bonitas in Orem, one of the absolute best Mexican Restaurants I have EVER been to. I ordered some yummy pork taco-y things and Devin decided to order a supreme burrito. Well my food came, and it looked yummy and wonderful. Then they brought out Devin's. The burrito was the size of the platter! It was seriously about 18 inches long and 5 0r 6 inches wide. It weighed at least five pounds. How do we know this? Well he only ate a little bit, and we weighed the rest of it when we got home. I still can't believe it. It fed us for 5 meals! I wish we had a picture to put up, but the only ones we have are on our cell phones. Maybe we'll send them to ourselves and I can put one up. At any rate, I highly recommend this restaurant. They had the best pork I have had in my entire life; and I'm not exaggerating. For anyone interested, it's on 800 North in Orem, off of State Street. We will be going back many, many times.

Swine Flu

Thursday, Devin and I got our Swine Flu vaccine. After waiting in line for about 30 minutes or so, we got up to the front of the line. While we were waiting we saw at least two children fighting for their life to not get shots. The little boy (about 10) had about 4 people holding him down, and the little girl (about 3) had to be held down by her mom. Poor things! Once we were up, Devin held my hand and I looked away. Luckily, it only took about 30 seconds. I held Devin's hand, and then we were out of there. I didn't have any problems, but Devin's arm was sore for the next day or so. But, we're all vaccinated and hopefully we will not get the Swine Flu!

Exciting Updates

So I almost forgot, but we have 3 items of news that are exciting (well at least for us they are). Last week, Devin began shadowing a podiatrist here in Provo & he really likes it! On Monday, I bowled a 115, a new record for myself (and the crowds go wild)! Then on Tuesday, Devin finished his podiatry school app and submitted it! Now we just have to wait and see what happens!

Happy Halloween!

Yesterday was Halloween. We started out the morning by finding out that we are going to have to spend an additional $350 on our car (which we just spent $412 on Wednesday) to get the knock sensor fixed so that we can pass our emissions test to renew our registration. Rubbish! Oh well. While Devin was busy working on school work, I chatted with friends & family and started cleaning the house & doing laundry. Devin did the dishes and helped me with random things, including running to the store to buy goods for our Halloween festivities. That evening, Jeremy and Sam Keyes came over and we had spiderweb nachos (see picture below) and played games (specifically Pirates dice and Sorry). Sadly, we only had one group of trick-or-treaters, even though we actually had candy this year. So Jeremy, Sam, Devin, and I all enjoyed the candy and my last cake. After the Keyeses left we watched some NCIS and called it a night.

P.S. Surprisingly, our pumpkins were still alive this morning; a true miracle after our last one was smashed a full two weeks before Halloween in broad daylight.

Cake 3!

Sadly, this week was my last cake class. I have really enjoyed my class, and I'm glad that I don't suck at cake decorating! I was a little worried that it would be one of those things I just wasn't going to be good at. Fortunately, none of my cakes were complete disasters :) This last week, we learned to make roses, leaves, sweet peas, and bows. I actually really like making roses and I made about a dozen of them for my cake. This week, Devin made me my cake while I was waiting for the car to be repaired (thanks love!). We ended up with a triple chocolate cake with chocolate mint icing and vanilla pudding filling. We haven't tried it yet, but I'll let you know how awesome it tastes when we do. Enjoy the pictures!

From the side, note the pretty roses

From the side at an angle. As a side note, the roses were supposed to be red but they ended up kind of coral. Oh well, still looks good.

Homecoming Weekend aka Surviving Midterms aka My Parents Come to Town!

This last week has been crazy; but we survived. Wednesday and Thursday, I studied for and took a midterm and wrote two papers. Friday, I studied for and took another midterm. Tuesday of this week I studied for and took another midterm, and wrote another paper. Wednesday, I took the car in to get fixed and had my last cake decorating class.

Thursday evening, my parents came into town from Reno, NV for BYU homecoming weekend. I didn't get to see them that evening due to the test and it being late. Friday morning, I woke up to Devin's phone ringing and someone knocking at the door. Devin had taken my phone by accident and was calling to tell me that my dad had called my phone. Meanwhile, at the door, was my dad. After spending about an hour with my parents, they dropped me off at campus for class and headed off to run errands and have fun. After classes, I had to study for & take a test, so no time with parents :( That evening, Mom and Dad had an alumni banquet to attend. Afterward, they were planning on coming over but my mom's knees weren't up to climbing up our small stairwell (she needs knee replacements), so no time with parents again :(

However, Saturday Mom and Dad took Devin and I out to lunch (my aunt and cousins came along as well), and then I helped my mom shop for some new clothes while the boys wandered around the mall trying to avoid shopping. That afternoon we watched the game until about the beginning of the 4th quarter. At that point, we decided there was no point in continuing to watch (oh the sadness) and put in Monsters vs. Aliens. Sunday, Mom and Dad came to church with us and the Choir performed. After church, my dad helped me with the dishes (hooray!) and we watched some Cosby Show. Unexpectedly, we ended up having dinner at our place (Devin's Aunt Dana woke up sick or we would have dined at Kenneth's). After watching one of my family's favorite movies, The Trouble with Angels, my parents took off back to my Aunt's for the night. It was great to see them though, and I can't wait to see them again for the Holidays.

Unfortunately, no one remembered to take pictures. Sorry!

Cake 2!

Cake Decorating week two: Flowers, shell borders, dots, and clowns. This week, I made a vanilla cake with a lemon pudding filling (Devin helped me decide). It has very similar coloring to my last cake, as I didn't have the time or motivation to make & color more icing. Here are some pictures. Enjoy!

My clown was originally sitting up, by the time he got home he was leaning
Little bit of zig zag and flowers

Cake!

Well here it is, my first decorated cake. Not too bad for being thrown together at the last minute. Devin dropped me off at my class and I ran in without my cake frosted, without my apron, without my book, without my icing dyed, and with some of my supplies not ready. Needless to say, it was a bit crazy. Hopefully my next one will be a little more "polished. " This week we learned star points, lines, writing, and rose bases. Next week: animals, clowns, and I think flowers. Anyway, here it is. Enjoy!

High Scores

Devin got his MCAT scores on Saturday! He got a 28! The average for Podiatry school is about a 24/25, so we should be good. Now all he needs to do is get some job-shadowing experience and then wait for letters and interviews! Ahh!

In other news, I bowled what I believe to be my highest game ever in my class on Monday; 102. I was so excited! I think that everyone in my class was laughing at my excitement. I only hope that it wasn't a fluke.

Cake Decorating

As part of my birthday in August, Devin signed me up for a Cake Decorating class offered through BYU Campus Craft & Floral. Needless to say, I was very excited. Tonight was the first class. I didn't get to do any decorating yet, but I was introduced to all the gadgets and some of the techniques of basic cake decorating. The class, though taught at BYU, is a Wilton class; they are the who's who of cake decorating. Unfortunately, it is a bit pricey. Luckily, BYU sells a lot of the stuff at a decent price and people in the class get a 20% discount. Next week, I will decorate my first cake and I will be sure to post pictures. So hopefully I am not terrible at this; because I think it could be a great skill to have. Wish me luck!

Pizza Pizza!

After a long hiatus, we made pizza again. It may have been close to a month now that we have gone without making pizza. What a travesty! Anyway, after General Conference today, we returned to our awesome pizza making ways. We made our usual sausage and veggie pizza and we invented a new one. It has steak, black beans, and onions on it. We believe it would also be good with tomatoes. Our next adventure in pizza making will be to try and make our own sauce.

Steak & Black Bean Pizza

General Conference

This weekend was the 179th Semi-annual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That means that we spend eight hours (ten if you're a guy over 12) watching the leaders of our church give us counsel and advice. This year was great. I feel like we were able to be spiritually refreshed and energized. I especially enjoyed talks about receiving Spiritual Inspiration and heading it, and Elder Holland's talk on the Book of Mormon. I am excited to read the talks again soon. If anyone is interested in any of the talks look at www.lds.org or www.mormon.org.

Kitchenaid!!!!

We finally got our Kitchenaid Mixer!!! On our 15 month anniversary. We used a coupon, giftcards, and the money from my Grandparents, and picked it up at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Best part (apart from just having it) is that it is Yellow! Hooray! We already set it up and put it away. I can't wait to use it! *Happy Dance!*

Stuff

Highlight of the week: our new desktop is here! However, due to the form of delivery, we are forever skeptical of FedEx. Our monitor came on Wednesday, and it was left on the front porch. Our CPU came Thursday, and was left with our neighbors. Sketchy!

Besides that, Devin took his first test (100%) and I had physical therapy, BYU beat CSU, we cleaned our apartment and went shopping, I watched the Relief Society General Broadcast, and Devin had a boys night out with his old roommates, Jeremy, Brian, and Chris, at Brick Oven.

The Broadcast was great and Devin had fun. Apparently Brian's baby Benjamin was a big hit with the waitresses and other customers. It's sad to think that that may have been the last guys night out before we all head our separate ways in the next year or so. We'll all be growing up and moving on (well, moving on at least; the growing up may take a few more years :) ). Kinda sad and exciting at the same time. Devin said they were discussing how two years ago, when they started this tradition, they would have been talking about entirely different things. Oh well, all is flux and we just go with the flow.

MCAT, Computers, and Football

In recent news: our computers decided to go on the fritz. Devin's motherboard died and so his computer is completely dead. My power cord decided to get stripped down and so we couldn't use my computer either. While we had ordered a new cord, it didn't come for a week. So we spent a week without a computer. Meanwhile, Blackboard is being sketchy so that no one can download documents from it. This definitely proved to be an adventure for taking quizzes. And in a continuing saga of shaftiness, the Internet at our complex has been ridiculous. Either it won't connect at all, it only stays connected for mere minutes, or it takes a lifetime to load pages. It's been a fun week for technology to say the least. Devin and I have truly come to appreciate having computers and Internet that work, and work well. We have ordered ourselves a new desktop to replace Devin's laptop, and for future family needs.

I also went to the doctor and found out that I have an inflamed sciatic nerve. So now I'm in physical therapy again to help the inflammation go down and I had to drop my Irish dance class :( But, I figure it's better to be healthy than to take a fun class.

Oh! I applied for graduation in December! Hooray! I'm so excited to be done. Oh and Devin took the MCAT last Saturday and he will find out his scores in about a month. Then we start the application process. Our top three choices for podiatry school right now are in North Chicago, IL; Glendale, AZ; and Independence, OH.

The BYU football team was doing amazingly well until a humiliating loss yesterday. We beat #3 ranked Oklahoma at the beginning of the season, creamed Tulane, and then lost yesterday at home to Florida State. Oh the sadness. On the other hand, the University of Washington (Devin's other team) beat #3 USC yesterday so he's happy. Hopefully, the Cougars can step it up and recover what could be an awesome season.

What an Exciting Weekend!

I love 3-day weekends. While it is true that they tend to throw off your internal weekly calendar, they are wonderful for morale and sanity. This last weekend was especially wonderful.

Only having been in school for a week, we weren't too burned out yet; but a break was a nice way to help us transition from Summer to school. Friday afternoon, Devin and I went and saw "Up" at the "Dollar" Theatre (it actually cost $1.25 now; a major rip off in my opinion :)). This has been on our list of movies to see for about 6 months now. Even though it is a bit sad, we both really liked it. Devin said it's in his top 2 for Pixar movies. I don't know if I would say that; but only because I love basically all Pixar movies.

Saturday, we spent the bulk of the day cleaning and relaxing. That evening, Jeremy and Sam came over to watch the BYU vs. OU game. They brought a kind of enchilada lasagna and we made salad and virgin pineapple mimosas. Best part of Saturday: BYU WON!!!!!!! Boo ya! We were ranked No. 19 and they were ranked No. 3! (As of today, we are ranked No. 9 I believe.)

Sunday, was Fast Sunday and we had church. After church I took a nap and we made pizza! We made a Cheeseburger Pizza and a variation on our usual Sausage (we didn't have any green peppers so it only had meat, cheese, tomatoes, and onions). Both pizzas turned out well.

Monday, we got a little more housework and studying done before going to see "Star Trek" in the "Dollar" Theatre with Karly and a couple of her friends. Once again, a movie that we've wanted to see for awhile and ended up really enjoying. Only downside: we sat in the 3rd row, because there was nowhere else left to sit. Poor Devin. That afternoon we went over to the Keyeses for a potluck BBQ (we brought pickles in case you were wondering). Apart from the Keyeses and ourselves, Jaime and Dave Ballard; Bethany, Brian, and Benjamin Davis; Bryce and Christina Miller; Chris and Alisa Sharp; Jeremy's sister Emily and her husband Erich; Jeremy's Aunt and Uncle and cousins; and Jeremy's grandparents were there. Needless to say, it was a bit of a party. There was volleyball and card games to play, and of course, socializing. Highlight of the BBQ: when Chris and Alisa showed up and we all found out that they are expecting! Hooray for them! After dinner, we headed back home and Devin studied some more for the MCAT (which he's taking Saturday by the way).

All in all, it was a really enjoyable weekend, and I'm sad that we won't have another break until Thanksgiving.

Babysitting; Sort of.

This last week, Devin and I have been switching off with another couple to help watch the pets of another couple at our church: two rats and three fish. The two rats are girls named Xena (she's white with red eyes) and Jane (gray with black eyes and big ears), and the three Betta fish are boys named Bono (he's blue), John Williams (he's red), and Jack Johnson (he's orange).

Initially, I couldn't convince Devin that the rats are actually very cute and sweet, and not gross and dirty. However, eventually I got him to come with me and play with the rats and he changed his mind. They are very playful and fun, and by the end of it, Devin was saying that we should probably get rats. While this may not end up happening, it was nice to be around animals for a change.

In other news, we have adopted Karly's fish, Fitz. For now, we call him Fish, but may change his name at some point.

Last First Day of School

Today was our first day of our last year as undergraduates! Thank goodness! I will be done in December and Devin will be done in April, and we are just about schooled out.

To make things more interesting on our first day of school, it took me over a half an hour to find parking! As I was hunting, someone took the only decent spot I saw, another person in search of spot almost hit me, some freshmen jay walked in front of me so that I almost missed a light (I was chastising them in my car and thinking of seriously running them over), and I ended up parking in the boonies and being 15-20 minutes late for my class. Rubbish!

After my first class I went to the bookstore and bought my books, and spent only $85! It's a miracle! I then spent the rest of my break chatting with my mom and buying some Halloween decorations.

On a side note, I felt like there were even more people on campus than normal. Not only was the parking bad, but so was the traffic, the crowds, the heat, and finding anywhere to sit. Like I told my mom, maybe I'm just getting old because I felt like there were too many people.

All in all, I think this will be a good semester for both of us. Devin will be taking a Portuguese, Public Speaking, and Religion class in addition to his Chemistry classes. I will be taking two classes for my major, a cooking class, a dance class, and beginning bowling. So far we're enjoying our classes, and hopefully will continue to do so. We will both continue working part-time and hopefully find some time for extracurricular activities like intramural tennis for Devin! We'll let you know how everything turns out.

Happy Birthday!

Nothing too exciting this last week. ;) I only worked a half-day on both Tuesday & Thursday. Wednesday, we went out to lunch at Tucanos as a pre-birthday celebration and it was very yummy and very filling. They also sang to me in Portuguese and I got to dance and wave a tambourine. Too bad we didn't think to take the camera...

Thursday was my birthday! After work, I got to relax and then Devin gave me my presents. He got me some new towels for our bathroom (which I asked for), a hardback 1st edition of a book that I like, and he enrolled me in a cake decorating class in October! Hooray! We went out for dinner to the Macaroni Grill and had wonderful food. They also gave me free cake (sort of, seeing as I ordered sorbet and I never got it) and sang to me in Italian. Then we wandered around Target deciding how to spend our last Target gift card, before going home. We didn't end up buying anything. Devin had made me a brownie ice cream cake (which he kept secret from me by banning me from the kitchen, the fridge, and sitting where I might see him doing anything) and we watched a movie, "The Revenge of the Pink Panther".

Friday and Saturday, we were completely worthless and basically just bummed around. Although yesterday we did go play Frisbee golf and run some errands (like buying Devin a white handkerchief for the Oquirrh Mountain Temple dedication today). We also went and picked up Karly from the airport. Today, after the Temple dedication I took a nap. Then I went visiting teaching and Devin and I made pizza (Chicken Fajita and All-Meat).

The week in review: Finals, Food, and Fish

We survived another round of finals! Thank goodness I only have another batch, or I might kill myself.

Last Monday was the last day of classes, so we both got up early and headed to campus. Both of my classes were pretty uneventful and all we did was review. I think Devin's classes were pretty much the same. That night, Devin began his take home final and I bummed around (hooray).

Tuesday we both had work and studying to do. The only exciting thing of the day: I made omelets for the first time, and they weren't a complete failure!

Wednesday, Devin had to turn in his take home final in the morning and then had work. I spent my day studying and then took my first final. That evening, Devin continued to study (he is a much better student than myself when it comes to studying) and I filled out my study guide and bummed around. For dinner, we ordered pizza and bought pop.

Thursday, more work and last finals. Devin didn't get done taking his final until about 9:00 so I spent my afternoon/evening doing laundry and helping some people from our church clean out their apartment. To celebrate the end of finals, we went out to eat at Applebee's (funded by a gift card from Keeley)

Friday, Devin went to work and I cleaned most of the apartment. That evening, still not feeling much like cooking, we went out to Red Robin (also funded by the aforementioned gift card) and wandered around the mall. That night, after returning from watching Eureka at my cousins', we began babysitting Karly's fish Fitz.

Saturday, was a little more exciting. We got up fairly early and picked up Karly and Susan and took them to the airport, to fly home to visit their parents. Due to a ridiculous amount of traffic, Susan missed her flight and had to catch another one. Later that afternoon, we went and watched "Ponyo" with my cousins and aunt. Weird movie. Cute, but weird. As we were leaving, we ran into Devin's cousin Kena who works for Habitat For Humanity. Per her suggestion, we all bought Panda Express to benefit Habitat. We finished off our evening by going over to my cousins' to watch "The Castle of Cagliostro".

Sunday, we went to church and then went over to Kenneth's house for dinner. He made Noodles! I had requested them for my birthday and he remembered. Hooray. Noodles are homemade chicken noodle soup that you eat on top of mashed potatoes. Sounds weird I know, but very good! For dessert we had cookies and ice cream; and afterwards, Devin went and played "baseball" with his first cousins once removed. All in all, it was fun. Once we came home, we washed out Fitz's house and gave him new water. The rest of the evening was spent reading and relaxing.

Weddings & Babies

In the last two weeks or so, a number of our friends have gotten married or had babies. I just thought I would share their news and my excitement.

Busy Week

So this week was kinda crazy. I had two presentations and project due between Monday and Friday. Tuesday and Thursday I had work all day. Devin had a presentation on Tuesday and work Monday through Friday. Devin also offered to make pizza for his stockroom group meeting, and spent all of Wednesday evening buying pizza supplies and making 3 pizzas (BBQ Chicken, Margarita, and Supreme). Wednesday, I also decided to clean the house before Devin's pizza making. Friday, we went to my cousins' to watch Eureka, finished the books we were reading, and collapsed. Saturday, we spent the day shopping and then spent the evening with the Keyeses playing BANG! and talking until about 11:30. Then this morning, I threw a roast in the crock pot before we headed off to church and had choir practice again for the first time in 3 weeks. After church, we made dinner and just relaxed. Nothing TOO exciting, but exhausting nonetheless.

That's our update for the week. Next week: Finals!

Road Trip!

Well after Kiwi's wedding, it was time to head back to Devin and real life. Susan and I had been planning on going to church, for at least Sacrament. However, I woke up a little late and instead we just left from the Garvers'. After tracking our few possessions down and packing them up, we hugged Roy and Cindy-Lee and hit the road. The drive down and into California was pretty uneventful. We stopped at a rest stop just north of Medford, OR and ate our sack lunches, and I took the wheel. About 100 miles or so in CA, we had to stop at an agricultural stop. Crazy Californians. They asked us if we had any produce, and after showing them our cherries (from the Garvers' front yard) we were informed that they probably had maggots. They offered to let us pull aside and eat them, but we opted to ditch them and keep driving. Once we stopped for gas in Susanville, Susan drove the rest of the way in Reno.

Due to the hour of our arrival, we first drove to my parents' apartment for dinner. After eating my mom's yummy pasta salad and cooling off in the pool, we changed and drove out to their house! Hooray for my parents having a house after 6 years without one! It's a nice little house, 3 bedrooms, 2 bath, vaulted ceiling, island kitchen, big master suite, and nice landscaped yard and sprinklers. The only down side (besides not having a cat yet), carpet in the bathrooms. Gross. After we toured the house, I demoed my CUTCO to my parents and called it a night. Susan took the couch in the office and I slept on my old bed in the guest room.

The next morning, after I showered, my parents bought my CUTCO demo set and ordered some more before we started packing up. We loaded up the luggage we had and a few of the things my parents have been storing into the Neon. Saying goodbye to my parents, we headed back on the road.

The next nine hours or so were very boring. Unfortunately for Susan, I fell asleep at least twice while she was driving. Apart from miles of random of traffic pylons blocking off one lane of the highway, not much of interest happened. We finally made it back to Provo around 7 that night. Boy was I glad to be home and not traveling, not to mention seeing Devin again. :)

Here are some pictures from our adventure:

Kiwi's wedding! (Part 2)

Saturday morning came, and I was way tired. Susan & I went to meet up with Kari & the other bridesmaids for breakfast at the Afro Waffle or something like that. We had Belgian waffles with strawberries and some super rich milk and took pictures with the wooden Afro man cut-out. Kari then had to drop off her sisters and head out for her hair appointment.

Susan and I went & met up with one of my friends from high school there and tried to see my old cat Boots. Unfortunately, we were able to see all of their other cats; but Boots was in hiding. After an hour or so, we gave up and headed back to the Garvers'. We then proceeded to gather all of our stuff we would need for the wedding, and headed to the church for a BBQ. The idea was then that Kari would call us once her hair was done and we would go over to her apartment (right next to the church). As with all hair appointments, it took longer than planned and Susan & I ended up bumming around Target for awhile.

Finally, we get a call from Kari and head back to her apartment. All of the bridesmaids and Kari are there. In comes the photographer and Amanda and her husband for Amanda to do Kari's makeup. In total there are about 10 people in this tiny apartment with no AC trying to get ready with the photographer snapping pictures of us. Needless to say, it was a hot, sticky adventure. Well someone smart was watching the clock and warned us that we needed to go to get Kari to the venue so we all rush out the door like the place is on fire. I hop in the car with Kari and her little sister Helen. No AC again, and we can't even roll down the window or it will ruin our hair.
(Kiwi getting ready)

We're not a mile away when we get a call from the photographer that we have to go back because one of his bags is locked in her apartment. Kari flips a wild u-turn and speeds back. When she gets out of the car to hand him her keys, she finds a smushed bee on her seat. She had been sitting on a bee, and she's allergic. We get on the road again and get there right on time. I run in the house and leave Helen with Kari, to make sure that John is nowhere to be seen.

After securing the location, we took Kari upstairs to get ready. I swear it's about 120 in that room so we get Kari into her basics and we all hover around this little fan and fan Kari with random things. Then came the jewelry drama. I look at Kari and ask her "Kiwi, where's your jewelry?" She gets this panicked look on her face and sends her future step-mother-in-law to ask her grandma. The jewelry is at her grandma's house about 20 minutes away. They send someone to get it. We think it's Kari's dad but it was her aunt. Luckily, all was fine and we got the jewelry in time. Then came the tie drama. Kari & John had had matching ties for all the father figures to wear and one of them was missing. Kari was not happy to say the least. While that was being sorted out, the photographer comes in and begins taking pictures again. In the meantime, I'm fixing Kari's hair and spraying it down as much as possible and spritzing her with body mist so she doesn't smell like sweat on her wedding day (I myself put on deodorant like 3x that day). Somewhere in all of this, the flowers were brought upstairs for the bridesmaids and Kari.

Five minutes before the ceremony starts, we get Kari into her dress. There were lots of tears and excited emotions involved. Then we all make sure John is still out of sight, and we all line up at the top of the stairs. Kari's nephew Sylvan (the ring-bearer) was looking very dapper in his little tux, but he kept messing with his boutonniere. Eventually his mother (the maid of honor) just chucked it somewhere. The music starts and we hear our que and we all walk down the stairs slowly, in staggered groups. Once we're by the alter, the music for Kari starts. And for some reason, it seems to be taking her forever to get down the stairs. We then see that Sylvan is rather confused as to what he's supposed to be doing and ended up running to his grandma. The flower girl (John's niece), is laying her petals slowly, one at a time. Eventually Kari and her dad make it up to alter and the ceremony can begin. For time & space purposes, I will spare you the details of the ceremony. Suffice it to say, that it was INCREDIBLY hot and everyone but Kari looked like they were melting. They were pronounced man & wife, and we all walked back up the aisle and out the door for some fresh air and liquid!
Kari & John
The guests and the wedding party all hang out and drink some water & punch while we wait for the bride & groom to come out (Kari was having her dress bustled). Once they come out, it was time for everyone's favorite part of a wedding - pictures. Kari & John actually had a pretty good system in place so it didn't take years like it normally does. I did however get annoyed with the photographer asking that no one else take pictures. Pshaw! The best part of pictures came when we were taking the big group shot and Sylvan didn't want to cooperate because he wanted to eat his bagel. We managed to get a couple of good pictures of him, but then realized that Kari's mom wasn't in the pictures so we had to retake them. Sylvan refused to look at the photographer. Everyone tried everything, even the photographer told Sylvan that he had a bagel for him. No good. As a result, Sylvan is standing sideways, looking away in the group picture. Oh well.

While pictures were being taken I got Kari some water so she wouldn't die and we just socialized and ate food. Probably an hour later, John's step-mom comes out and asks for one of Kari's sisters to switch shoes with her. Luckily, I wear the same size shoe as Kari and I was wearing flats. So I ended up wearing her black going-away shoes for the rest of the reception. A little bit later, Courtney reminded me to get Kari food, so I went and commandeered some food for her. As soon as she sat down to eat, a line formed. Of course. A few minutes after that it was time to cut the cake and do the toasts. While cutting the cake, everyone kept screaming different things at them. "Don't cut the top layer, you want to save that for your anniversary!" "Cut the top layer, it's easiest!" "It's your wedding, do whatever you want!" That's what they ended up doing.
Then it was time for toasting. Kari's grandpa, John's dad, John's best man, myself, and the bride & groom went up to the cake table. Sadly, there was only one bottle opener so only those of us giving toasts got to drink martinellis while we were toasting. Kari's grandpa & John's dad gave short, sweet, and spiritual toasts. Then it was my turn. I had written mine and printed it out. It was a little less than a page, but still much longer than anyone else's. Pretty much as soon as I started to give it, I started to cry. By the end of it, Kari & I were both in tears. Oh well. Then John's best man gave his toast and we were released.
(Oh the crying)
Kari & John went upstairs to change & we served the cake and had Raspberry sorbet. I had to run Kari's going away shoes up to her (somewhat awkward) and realized that my change of clothes was in her apartment where they were going that night! I told her to just put my stuff out on the porch and I would pick it up later.

As we're going to see Kari & John off, this random (I think crazy) guy comes up and asks if he can take pictures of the wedding with his disposable camera and send them to the bride & groom. We let him, and watched Kari & John drive off into the dusk.
The get-away car
Then it was clean up time. We spent the next 45 minutes or so clearing tables, grabbing linens, and carrying things into the kitchen. Then it was time to go. Susan and I ran by Kari's and I stealthily picked up my stuff and we went back to Garvers' and, after talking to Devin on the phone, collapsed in bed.
