The Adventures of Curious Orson

For the Reader's Digest version, just scroll through the pictures and you'll get the gist of what's been going on around here.

SATURDAY:
5:00 pm Orson watched the old poorly done claymation version of Curious George goes to the hospital, the one where he swallows the puzzle piece and days later is sick because it's stuck inside him.
MONDAY:
8:00 am Orson is watching Curious George for the first time since Saturday but this time the PBS series. He is also riding his bike and playing with a quarter. Know where this is going? He never puts things in his mouth so I'm not worried.

8:20 Orson starts making a fussing and runs over to me, I know instantly that he has pulled a Curious George. He proceeds to gag and vomit several times and is really uncomfortable.  He is also not really wanting to swallow water or his spit so he starts drooling like a St. Bernard.

8:40 Get to the ER. Orson is communicating in grunts and one word answers only and is not himself. Matt and I are already positive that the coin is stuck in his esophagus. He's still drooling all over everything.

9:00  X-Ray

9:25 Doctor calls us over to his station.

And shows us this

We wonder for a moment how one actually swallows something so huge when they are so tiny.

10:05 Nurse starts an IV and wraps his hand up like he broke his arm. Orson is pretty ticked about it but later decides he can tolerate it cause it's a cool dinosaur bandage.

10:15 Orson's mood starts to change. He is now talking and wants to read a book.

10:40 We decide that the coin has moved and isn't hurting him anymore. Still wondering why we aren't in the operating room or why no one else is concerned about the coin going into his stomach. Again, tiny human and huge coin.

10:50 We tell the doctor that we think the coin has moved.

10:55 Have a 2nd X-Ray

11:15 We see that the coin is in Orson's stomach and decided to still have the doctor fish the coin out instead of risk it getting stuck in his terminal ileum, causing a blockage and major surgery.

11:50 Little Orsy gets sleepy meds and to go for an exciting gurney ride to the operating room.

12:10 Dr. brings us the search and rescue subject.

12:25 Nurse takes us to recovery where Orson is still snoozing.

All for a dang quarter!!

12:45 Orson finally decides to wake up. This was not my favorite thing, waiting for him to wake up from surgery for the first time... Knowing that sometimes people don't wake up.

12:55 He is wide awake talking about juice as we go to our room. He gets some fluids and eats some french fries, and sherbert while his vitals are monitored. He has a pretty scary smoker voice since his vocal cords were moved around. As well as a sore throat for obvious reasons.

2:00 Orson is all better and ready to move on to his next adventure. We get discharged and Orson walks himself to the car like nothing ever happened.

Note: he still does NOT like elevators.

Graduation and a family visit

I finished student teaching around Thanksgiving and have been doing long-term sub work that's teaching a reading class for a few hours in the morning. It has been such great experience and I'm pretty sad for it to end but Matty is going back to school and work soon so Orson and I get to be home together now. I love being a teacher but I really feel like my education will be so the most useful in teaching my children at home and I will someday in the future have my own classroom for more than a five week period of time.

BYU Idaho is such a good school and I feel so blessed to have been able to learn one-on-one from such qualified professors. In some ways I'm glad that we get to stay here a little longer and watch the school grow and do more great things. I know we will never again live under five minutes from a temple and a walmart.

It was fun having people here for graduation. To me it seemed like a hectic visit but I hope it wasn't for everyone else. No one else seemed too concerned that I couldn't find my cap and gown the morning of convocation but luckily, DI was stocked with them. Still have no idea what happened to the darn things.

We're at home this Christmas for the first time since Matt and I have been married and we are having fun carrying out family traditions on our own. Gotta go make breakfast casserole for tomorrow!

Master Yoda and the Jedi Knights

Orson had a little yoda hat but I made it too small and he didn't like wearing it. So I guess he's just a jedi. This picture below is before we painted his light saber green. Also, Matty made all of our costumes while i was at school and he made his own light saber out of plumbing parts and polycarbonate tubing. Ask him about it and he'll be tickled.
