Spring Break 2013 - Our First Real Road Trip

We decided to get brave and take a road trip for spring break.  We ventured all the way to southern California (approx 10 hours) and back, and we did it all without an airplane.  Yes, this is news.  We did it, and I think we just might do it again someday.  Garrick had a whole week off of school as well as the two weekends surrounding the week, so it was nice to not be in too much of a hurry.

We left Friday after Garrick got off of work and drove to Las Vegas.  We stopped in Cedar City and ate dinner, and the kids fell asleep after that.  Of course, there's something about hotels that gets them all riled up, and this trip was no exception.  They woke up and checked out the hotel room, ran around a lot, and then fell asleep to some warm milk (yes, our children still like their beverages warm) and stories.

We didn't get to enjoy that hotel too much as we were up and on our way the next morning.  We made it to my sister, Dawn's house by lunch time.  Dawn and her family were hosting the Jones family reunion starting Sat night, but we were happy that we were able to visit with them for a while before their big party started.  Logan loves his cousins.  It's kind of sad that all of them live far away.  He and Kate, Dawn's youngest, play especially well together.  Like always, they had a lot of fun running around and playing.  Lexi loved hanging out and doing whatever Logan was doing.

We drove to our hotel in Carlsbad on Sat night.  We really liked staying in the Hilton Homewood Suites.  We had two rooms (a bedroom and a family room/kitchen with a sofa bed), and they fed us breakfast each day and dinners on the weekdays.  What a deal!

Here's a brief itinerary of the rest of the week.  I'll fill in a few details with the pictures, LOTS of pictures.

Sunday - church in a Carlsbad ward.  Logan went to his class and Lexi went to nursery without either on of us.  Not too bad for being visitors!  We rested at the hotel in the afternoon and then spent some time at the beach.

Monday - Legoland!  We went when it opened and then debated...do we push through as long as we can or do we head back to the hotel (5 min away), take naps, and then head back to Legoland?  We opted for the latter.  It would have been nice to have had about an extra hour or so.  There were some fun things that we did at the end that Logan would have enjoyed doing more than once.

Tues - We ended up touring the US Midway in San Diego.  It was interesting, but not the best choice considering the ages of our children.  We took a walk on the beach that evening.

Could she be any cuter?
There were 3 other aircraft carriers in the bay.  A very rare sight!
Wed - We drove to San Diego again and spent the day at the zoo.  We love that place!  The animals are amazing, and the greenery is just as amazing.  They say it's considered a botanical garden as well as a zoo.  We had a great time, tired out the kids, and headed back to Las Vegas.

Riding the airtram and loving it!
Mom was a little nervous but everyone else seemed to enjoy it.
Thurs -  We drove from Vegas to St George and stopped and did a little hiking.  That was a nice break.  The kids love hiking on the red rocks.

This girl loves picking flowers.

I added these pictures late, and it was taking too long to get them moved to the right spots.  So, they're just going to stay here at the end.

I was kind of surprised Logan agreed to this ride.

He was all about getting to the top first...and they did.
Logan LOVED driving this car and passing other kids.  :)

Getting ready to make a move.

Enjoying a beautiful sunset.

About to see his favorite animal...

Lexi loves sharing...

Family Photo taken with the camera's timer.

We saw a friend of mine here, and she took our picture.  Sadly, the kids weren't about to put down their Capri Suns.

Favorite Winter Activities

Here's a little photo journey through some of our favorite wintertime activities.

* Watching BYU basketball games.
We buy the cheap tickets for the seats at the top, and we usually have plenty of room.  As long as there are popcorn and soda included (and maybe an IPhone game or two), the kids are in.

"Are you kidding me?!? That wasn't a foul!!"

 * Going to ToysRUs, also known as "the R Store."
Because we live only about 5 minutes away, this is a great outing for us in the winter time.  The kids love looking at the toys and playing with the trains, and we usually get out of there without spending any money.

* The new Frontrunner Train to SLC.
This hasn't become a regular outing yet, but we did it once this winter and had a fun time.  We can get on the train about 5 min from our house, and it takes us up to Salt Lake, making 4 or 5 stops along the way.

* Just hanging out in the house, pretending it's sunny.

* Building Legos.  Logan is quite good at it!

* Visiting the Living Planet Aquarium in Sandy.  We especially love the otters and the penguins!

* Playing at the Children's Museum at the Gateway Mall in SLC.

 * This last one was a first for me and Garrick (together), but it might have to become a tradition.  We watched a session of the NCAA tournament in SLC.
