For January we'll be reading Animals in translation by Temple Grandin. Here's the review from Publisher's Weekly as found on Amazon.com:
Philosophers and scientists have long wondered what goes on in the minds of animals, and this fascinating study gives a wealth of illuminating insights into that mystery. Grandin, an animal behavior expert specializing in the design of humane slaughter systems, is autistic, and she contends that animals resemble autistic people in that they think visually rather than linguistically and perceive the world as a jumble of mesmerizing details rather than a coherent whole. Animals—cows, say, on their way through a chute—are thus easily spooked by novelties that humans see as trivialities, such as high-pitched noises, drafts and dangling clothes. Other animals accomplish feats of obsessive concentration; squirrels really do remember where each acorn is buried. The portrait she paints of the mammalian mind is both alien and familiar; she shows that beasts are capable of sadistic cruelty, remorse, superstition and surprising discernment (in one experiment, pigeons were taught to distinguish between early period Picasso and Monet). Grandin (Thinking in Pictures) and Johnson (coauthor of Shadow Syndromes) deploy a simple, lucid style to synthesize a vast amount of research in neurology, cognitive psychology and evolutionary biology, supplementing it with Grandin's firsthand observations of animal behavior and her own experiences with autism, engaging anecdotes about how animals interact with each other and their masters, and tips on how to pick and train house pets. The result is a lively and absorbing look at the world from animals' point of view.

Book Group Updates
So the book review for November’s book is a little late. Sorry! We’re reading Flowers for Elvis by Julia Schuster. When biracial twins are born to a single woman in the south in the 1950s, one twin dies, but her spirit lingers to watch over her sister.
We’ll be meeting this Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Alisa Brough’s home (2303 N. 2350 W.) at 7 p.m. and we hope you’ll join us.
For December, we’ll be reading Two: The Story of Mary and Joseph from Galilee by Marjorie Holmes.
“This is the story of two real people whose lives were touched by God: two people chosen by God to provide an earthly home for His Son. Here are Mary and Joseph-a teenage girl and a young carpenter-alone, frightened, in love, faced with family conflict, a hostile world and an awesome responsibility. It is a story for young and old alike; for everyone who finds the Christmas tale a source of timeless beauty and wonder, a compassionate, emotional novel of divine love” (from Amazon.com).
This should be a fast read and a great way to get into the holiday spirit. We hope you’ll plan to join us on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.

Eat, Pray, Love Book Review
Most everyone has heard of our next book, but in case you haven’t heard about Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, here is what The New Yorker has to say about the book:
“At the age of thirty-one, Gilbert moved with her husband to the suburbs of New York and began trying to get pregnant, only to realize that she wanted neither a child nor a husband. Three years later, after a protracted divorce, she embarked on a yearlong trip of recovery, with three main stops: Rome, for pleasure (mostly gustatory, with a special emphasis on gelato); an ashram outside of Mumbai, for spiritual searching; and Bali, for "balancing." These destinations are all on the beaten track, but Gilbert's exuberance and her self-deprecating humor enliven the proceedings: recalling the first time she attempted to speak directly to God, she says, "It was all I could do to stop myself from saying, 'I've always been a big fan of your work.'"
Whether you read the book or see the movie, come discuss it with us at Dawn Bingham’s home (2218 N 2270 W) on October 19. The fun begins at 7 p.m. We hope to see you there!

• Knife
• Trash can
• Trays
• Kitchen parchment
• (Freezer bags)
Gather ingredients:

• Sweetener if desired (I use dried sugar cane juice and/or stevia)
Procedure:
• Fill one bowl with a can or carton of juice
• Add ¼ cup Fruit Fresh
• Sweeten to taste, if desired. (I use ¼ cup dried cane juice and 1/8 cup steiva)
• Place colander over second bowl

For leather:
• Pour ½ cup of juice from second bowl in full blender and blend until smooth
• Pour onto tray covered with kitchen parchment (about ¼ to 1/3 inch thick)
• Dry in oven preheated to 170 degrees or in dryer
• To dry later, pour into freezer bags and freeze
For dried apricots:
• Place on screen, inside towards source of heat and dry in dryer or sun
• Or place on kitchen parchment covered tray and dry in oven preheated to 170 degrees
Note: If fruit accidently gets too dry, place in plastic bag with two halves of bread until bread goes dry and fruit goes soft. You can freeze leftover juice for popsicles.

Attention all Volleyball Players (and Wanna-Be's)
Ladies,
It's volleyball season again! For those of you that haven't had the pleasure of playing with our ward before... you are in for a treat!!! Our ward has a reputation of being the most friendly and funnest team in the stake! We have lots of team spirit, however not much skill--for the most part. If you would like to be a part of our team PLEASE join us!!!
We will be having a pre-game meeting and warm up on this THURSDAY night @ 5:45pm at our church. Our first offical game will be at 6:30 that night, so even if you can't make it to the pre-game meeting, please come for the game. Be sure to be at every game at least 5 minutes early to avoid us having to FORFEIT (that's our least favorite way to lose!). The schedule is on the left side of the blog here.
Our ward is the ONLY (so far) ward that has an offical team uniform. We wear ALL BLACK. So dust off your black t-shirt (and pants if you have them) and come on out and play! And we MEAN PLAY!!! This is church ball. The main purposes are A) physical activity, B) fellowshipping, and C) having fun together!
If you haven't signed the roster yet, please be at the church no later than 6:15 on Thursday night. BUT try to come to the meeting where we will be discussing rules and regulations and other important things before we get warmed up. One thing I need to tell you before Thursday night is that we are not allowed to wear hats for the games. Not sure if you wear one as much as I do, but we can't wear them during the games.
Hope to see you Thursday night!

September Book Group - Join Us on Sept. 21st!
Our next book group meeting is on September 21 at 7 p.m. at Phyllis Neeley's home (1835 W Pointe Meadows Loop). We will be discussing The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.
According to the Amazon.com review of the book, "There are two heroines here: Vida Winter, a famous author, whose life story is coming to an end, and Margaret Lea, a young, unworldly, bookish girl who is a bookseller in her father's shop. Vida has been confounding her biographers and fans for years by giving everybody a different version of her life, each time swearing it's the truth. Because of a biography that Margaret has written about brothers, Vida chooses Margaret to tell her story, all of it, for the first time. At their initial meeting, the conversation begins:
"You have given nineteen different versions of your life story to journalists in the last two years alone."
She [Vida] shrugged. "It's my profession. I'm a storyteller."
"I am a biographer, I work with facts."
The game is afoot and Margaret must spend some time sorting out whether or not Vida is actually ready to tell the whole truth. There is more here of Margaret discovering than of Vida cooperating wholeheartedly, but that is part of Vida's plan. The transformative power of truth informs the lives of both women by story's end, and The Thirteenth Tale is finally and convincingly told." --Valerie Ryan
With a surprise ending, you'll want to finish the book before coming to book group, and we hope you'll join us.

They are about 9" across, 3" deep, and up to about 15" tall. These are so easy. All you will do is paint the wood block, then you can sand and stain it (as shown) to give it the aged look. Then we will screw in one of these adorable options!

Wood Plaques - $23.50 each.
These are so beautiful in real life, I wish we had samples of all of them! They are approx. 16"x9", and about 3/4" deep. The metal is 3 dimensional, as shown in the "Follow the Star" example. (Sorry, they aren't great pictures). You will need to paint the frame, then you can age it (sand and stain). We will have a clear gloss you can spray over it too. The metal is simply screwed into the wood frame. The 3 Christmas options include the metal scroll handle at the top (can be used to hang it from, or just as a decorative topper. The Family one will have gold or silver wire-edged sheer ribbon.

5x5 Wood Plaques - $6.50 each.
These are so adorable, but don't be fooled, they take a little longer than you expect! (But well worth the trouble.) You can make one, two, three, or the whole year set of four! You will paint the base, then paint the 3 dimensional part of the metal piece. The metal is screwed into the wood base. They also come with a dowel (very stylish!) to plug in the back to stand your treasure on a table, or you can hang it from the hole on a wall.

Last but not least...
8x8 Wood Mounted Picture - $5.00 each.
This is by far the easiest thing we have for you!! Simply paint your wood piece, wait for it to dry. Then modge podge a picture on top! (And we can even show you how to do that!). Includes dowel to use on table top, or hole for hanging on the wall.
YOU WILL NEED TO BRING A PICTURE - (Jana has a limited number of these adorable pics.) Get an 8x10 picture and we will need to trim it down to ABOUT 7.25x7.25" (don't do this before you come, please).
We are thrilled to be using Crafter's Corner in AF to get the kits to make these things. We need to give them time to cut all of our supplies, and have everything ready for us. Please be sure to pay before September 14th, or we won't be able to order your supplies!

So, here's the write up on one of the funnest weekends I have had in a long time!
Friday afternoon about 12 of us met at The Homestead (Fanny's Grill) for supper. Unfortunately I left the camera in the car. Ooops!
After dinner some of us headed to get ice cream at The Dairy Keen.
Then carloads of party girls started showing up at the house around 6:30pm.
We started out the night with some "Minute to Win It" games. We did some apple stacking and some sucking of M&M's. As expected, Mindy beat us all - in both of them! Please.... do not go up against Mindy in any game of skill or chance and think you have a chance of winning! Yay for Mindy!!! :)
I mean seriously, look at Janelle go, and she still didn't win! Nice try though.
When most everyone had arrived we played a nice farming game. Everyone was given a card with one of five animals (pig, dog, cow, sheep, cat) and we had to put on a blindfold and start making our animal noise until we could find (and hang onto) all of the other animals of the same kind. Says Sue D. "I'm just glad I went to the restroom before we started this". Everyone was wiping the tears from their eyes as we took off our blind folds.
We played that a few more times, then started our next game.
Who am I? Some were pretty quick to find out, others simply gave up after a while!
Then we broke up into 2 groups and played "Times Up" or "3 Men (women in this case) on a Couch". Sadly, me and my camera weren't in the room for the 3 men on a couch game, but I sure had some fun with the Times Up crew.
Here's our favorite picture of Kristen doing her impression of Leonardo DiCaprio... I believe it has something to do with the Titanic.
After we finished up those games we started doing our skits. These weren't just any skits! We divided up into 4 groups, and each group was given a basket, crate, or bag with props, a famous person's name, a famous quote, and a ward calling that had to be incorporated into their skit. Holy Cow! I am blown away by some of the acting skills and creativity of these ladies, especially at 11:30pm!
Here's some pictures of the skits...
Mindy as a super hero, with Sarah rapping the story along.
Dawn as "Mollie" with her good works and individual worth head band, bringing Hannah Montana (Janelle) to YW with her.
Little Red Riding Hood (Tabitha) going to visit her Nursery Leader (Teresa), when the Big Bad Wolf (Saffron-in a pirate hat) stalls her!
Hmmm... they said they wanted to hide in the garage, because they couldn't decide what to do. I'm impressed with the Activities Committee meeting they portrayed after I forced them to participate anyway! Great job ladies!
After the skits, we turned it down a notch and had a little devotional. Arah reminded us how important it is to be happy with ourselves no matter what. We watched a great video that helped us all remember how fragile our lives are and how lucky we are to be women, mothers, sisters, and friends.
Then I'm not sure what happened... I went to bed! All I know is they were pretty quiet, if they stayed up!
Early (8:15) Saturday morning Mindy woke us all up with their family wake up songs and BYU fight songs. She's quite the morning person! :)
We had a great breakfast (with microwave, pre-cooked bacon) and welcomed lots of new faces!
Then we started our day of rejuvenation. We had 4 excellent speakers who helped us remember the talk that Sheri Dew gave our stake several months ago.
Sue started with "Personal Revelation", she says she learned more than us, but we all learned a lot from Sue. Thank you!
Then Dawn with "Not belittling or 'pecking' at each other". What a great reminder we all need to build each other up, and not tear each other down. Thank you! Dawn
Then we had a food break... that lasted longer than the 5 minutes we planned!
Kerstin was next on our day. She gave a wonderful presentation on "Understanding the Atonement". What a wonderful perspective she gave us, and the tears were flowing, as the spirit was so strong today. Thank you, Kerstin!
Next was Tabitha, she talked about "Remembering Our Individual Worth". She told us some amazing things about her conversion and shared such sweet testimony to us. No one could have shared this like she did! Thank you!
Next was lunch. I can't believe how little each person was assigned, and how much food there ended up being. Thank you to everyone who brought food (and took some home with you!)
After lunch, Arah had asked several women in the ward to share their testimonies. Each one of them had so much to add to our special day. Then the time was open to anyone who wanted to share. How lucky we were to share such a special and spiritual day. I feel truly uplifted by each of you, not only at the retreat, but every day!
Thank you to all of you who made the preparations and took the time to come. Arah and I discussed on the way home how that 24 hours went almost better than we could have ever imagined, and it's all because of YOU!!!
If you weren't able to join us, we truly missed you! We are hoping to do this again in the future. Keep your fingers crossed.
Love,
Karen

Fitness Night
Wasn't Fitness Night so much fun?
Sarah warming us up with some dance stretches and moves. Loved the music, so fun!
I am not an exerciser, but I had a great time. We had a lot more people turn out than I had expected, and the committee was THRILLED!
Thank you so much to Sarah, Teresa, Amy, Annette, Jordan, Alisa and Kerstin for your presentations, handouts, and willingness to share.
Thank you to all the good sports who came, exercised, and had a great time!
We loved the smoothies that Mindy shared, and were pleasantly surprised, huh? Thank you to those who donated food for the smoothies. We appreciate your willingness to share!
