Say what?

I just read this on Jay Leno's headlines and thought it was pretty funny. Hope everyone else finds it amusing as well :)

Hector and I celebrated our anniversary a little early. The company he works for had their Christmas party at the Zermott Hotel in Midway and had worked out discounted rates for any employees wanting to stay. So we decided to stay since it was a very nice hotel. We even had valet parking. The party was fun, lots of food and different activities. The best, in my opinion, was a roomwhere they were playing rock band :) They had food from different countries, Greek, Latin, Italian, Chinese, and French. The French was all dessert so it was very yummy :) Above is some video of the hotel.
I'll try and post some more later :)

Twilight

I went to see Twilight yesterday with Cora, my friend Amber and her daughter Miriam. It was a great movie :) We all loved it :) I haven't seen Amber in what seems like forever. We were roommates way back in the day. It was way fun talking and reminiscing about old times. Cora was of course listening for anything juicy ;) It was fun afternoon. I would recommend to anyone who enjoyed the Twilight series to go see the movie.

Stuff

Sometimes it seems like nothing exciting ever happens to us yet then something does. I was getting ready to leave Walmart last night-had 4 of the kids with me and had just finished putting groceries in the trunk. The trunk decides then that it will not close. The lock/unlock mechanism was not working and of course it had to be dark so I couldn't see anything. At that time Cora calls to get picked up from drumline practice. I'm thinking, how will I get Cora and get home with a trunk that won't close? I ended up having Miranda pull the back seat down and hold the manual trunk release so the trunk wouldn't fly open and had Hector get Cora. We have some very flat bread now but we managed to get home. That kind of excitement just doesn't happen often enough ;)

I also wanted to share a website that I've found very funny. It's a conservative website that gives their view of all things political. I think most of you will enjoy it. http://www.spottedowlnews.com/the_spotted_owl/

Career Day

Lisa and I went to the Hogle Zoo yesterday for their career day. They had boots set up from the Living Aquarium, Monte L Bean Museum, U of U, and Utah State. All of them had information on careers with animals ranging from aquatic to zoo. The Bean museum takes volunteers as young as 14 so Lisa is interested in contacting them about helping on Saturday mornings. She'd really like to volunteer at the zoo but it's just too far. We were able to pet a possum and a 6 ft boa. They had some of the zoo keepers out talking about some of the animals and how they train them and why. Lisa was only interested in the one with the big cats. They had some lectures going on also but we didn't attend. Lisa got lots of info from the booths and is very excited about being a zoologist someday.

OK, I just read THIS and thought I would share it with everyone.

Back in time

I was looking through some of my old pictures and stuff and came across this picture. It's my ninth grade seminary class. The clothes are sure to date all of us :) Some of my friends may recognize some of these people. Julie, your dear hubby Craig is in here lol. I'd forgotten we had seminary together.

Primary Program and other stuff

Well, it's that time of year when every ward has their primary program. Ours was today. It was the first time in forever when I didn't have to help out with it either as a teacher or in the presidency. It's always fun to watch the sunbeams and 5 yr olds while they are sitting up there. The faces they make always make me laugh. At least half of them spent the entire time waving while the other half was off in their own little world. I did love the music this year. I must say that nothing brings in the spirit more than music, IMHO. I liked most of the songs they sang this year. I think we should sing more songs in Sunday School and Relief Society/Priesthood :)
We haven't done much else lately. I was sick for a while which apparently stressed everyone out since I couldn't do everything-they had to be more self sufficient-the horror! Actually, they were really good and helped me out.
We did find out that we will be able to have Patty and Jacob over Christmas. We weren't going to have enough money to fly them up but their mom is going to be in LaVerkin visiting relatives and has told us we can pick them up there so they can stay the week of Christmas!

And the band played on....

Well, Cora is back from California! Springville took 2nd place for overall field show. Not too shabby considering they had to play in the pouring rain and the field was a giant mud pit. Some of the bands weren't so lucky with the mud, some lost shoes, one tuba player fell down knocking into the trombone next him, and one unlucky guy lost his pants. They had a great time though.
They were able to see Alcatraz on Halloween. I will have to get some pics from Cora to post. She also got to see China Town, Pier 39 and fisherman's warf. I'll see if I can get her to post on the kids blog more about her trip.
We are all glad she is home even her sisters :) They actually missed her ;).

Human catnip

This cat just loves Hector. She has to be on his lap whenever possible.

Sundance

Hector and I went up to Sundance yesterday to have lunch. They have a great restaurant and the scenery was soo pretty. The weather was awesome.

More scenery

Almost makes me wish winter wasn't coming :)

Gotta love the fall colors!

I loved the color of these aspens up the hill here.

More pictures from Cora's Marching band

I finally got some pictures off my cell phone from way back. I had forgotten that I had taken pictures of Cora's Marching band.

Glenn Beck

Hector and I went to see Glenn Beck this past Saturday. I was tired from all the travel that day but it was soo worth it. He is a great speaker and very funny. He talked about a lot of stuff-political and what not. If you ever listen to or watch his show you will know what I'm talking about. It's probably the only venue where he can reference LDS and have the audience know what he is talking about.
The only draw back was a bunch of young singers they had perform at the beginning. They were all pretty young( 16- 21?). There weren't bad singers but it just didn't seem to fit. I don't think there were many there that wanted to sit through them. Everyone wanted to see Glenn.
Despite that, it was a great evening. I took some pics but they didn't turn out too well. I will see about posting some of Glenn and of Colorado a little later. Don't hold your breath though, unless you are under water that is ;)

Can you see it now?

I am back from Colorado. I'm now so smart regarding microscopes that I can toss words around like parfocalization, centration, and spherical aberration and actually know what I mean ;) Anyways, it wasn't too bad. Fort Collins was pretty-very similiar to Provo but without as many mountains. It's a lot flatter there. Work wouldn't spring for a car so I was relegated to an airport shuttle and walking while I was there. Fortunately, the class was just around the corner from the hotel. Denver airport is HUGE. It makes Salt Lake look soo puny. I had to take a train (sort of like a very fast subway) to get anywhere(the gates, bagage claim etc.) Homeland security had upped the threat level to orange on my way home. I had to listen over the loudspeakers every 15 mins about reporting any suspicious behavior or people. I wonder if I looked suspicous to anyone? ;) I made it through security without any problems so apparently I'm not deemed a threat. Not old and gray enough I guess.
I missed my family while I was away. It's not so much fun going off somewhere when you are by yourself. It was nice not having to clean up after myself. I love having someone come clean my room and make my bed everyday!

Rocky Mountain High

Well, I am preparing to leave to Colorado tomorrow. My kids are all acting sad about me going. Unfortunately, I have to leave on Hector's birthday :( We are going to Glenn Beck the Saturday I get back though!
I just want everyone to know that I will be wise in the ways of the microscope upon my return so beware. Tara may have the super power of peripheral vision but I will add scope repair to my list of superpowers.

No duh!

As most of you know, I fix medical equipment at American Fork and Orem Community Hospitals. Most of the time when something is broken, the nurses or someone will put a sticky note on the offending machine with information about what is wrong with it.
This was stuck to one of the machines I picked up the other day. It has to be on of my favorites :)

Timpanogos Band Competition

Here's a picture of Cora when she didn't realize I was taking a picture. On second thought, she usually does something like this when I try and take her picture. Doesn't she look good in her band uniform?

Here's the entire band together getting their picture taken after they performed. It actually warmed up just a little at this time. It was very cold while were there.

Another shot of them together.

This is a couple of Lisa and Miranda's friends, Lindsey and Sarah.

This is Cora after performing. She looks so excited :)

This is a shot of Springville as they were getting ready to enter the field.
This is their pit crew setting up.

Here they are marching on.

This is the beginning of their field show. I had some video but for some reason it is corrupted :(

OK, finally a shot of her actually smiling!

Gina, Heather and I went to this competition to watch them. It was VERY cold and it snowed some! Good thing we had our coats and blankets. It brought back a lot of memories hearing the announcer say his usual, Drum Major, is your band ready? Then, Springville Highschool Band you may take the field in competition! Except put American Fork in there lol. I wanted to see A.F. play but there were playing a lot later in the day and I was accompanied by two complaining popsicles. Springville took 3rd place in their division. A.F. took 1st in theirs.
Cora has another competition in St. George next Friday then she's off to California on the 28th. They even get to take a Halloween cruise to Alcatraz! Lucky kids!

You are served

Once again, I am astounded by the things our congressmen do to waste time and/or money. Check out this from CNN. Feel free to comment on the stupidity of our elected leaders. The only thing worse is that enough people voted for them to put them in there.

Big Brother is Watching....

Does anyone else think that our government is completely out of control? I thought I lived in the United States of America where We The People have actual rights-Freedom of speech being one of them. My hopes are slowly being crushed as I read about things like THIS going on in our country. Of course, this happened in Florida which may have secretly left the union when no one was looking. This nonsense will only stop when people wake up and realize the government that WE voted in has legislated away all our freedoms.

It's Birthday Time

It's Patty and Jacob's 12th birthday today!!! I'm sure they are excited. Too bad we can't celebrate with them :( . I'm sure they are having fun in Arizona with their mom. Now we have 3 twelve year olds! Our little family is growing up. Soon, they will all move out and we will have the house to ourselves and we'll be able to party all the time ;)

Musings......

I see I have been slacking off as far as posting goes. We haven't gone on any fun trips like Tara and Dave unless you count the grocery store :) It's always an adventure at Wal*Mart. Does anyone else experience the screaming kid every time you enter that place? I'm beginning to think it's like one of those haunted houses where the sounds are triggered when you walk past something-in this case-walking past the front door.
Hector and I did see Eagle Eye over the weekend. A very good movie, exciting to watch. Of course the critics dissed it before it came out-too unbelievable for them. There was no obvious liberal agenda spouted so of course they can't endorse it. Imagination is beyond them unless it involves forcing everyone to do the right thing so we can live in a magical utopia where everyone is forced to work for the greater good and loves it. Of course those in power would not be required to work or give up anything-just make sure the rest of us do. Silly people. Anyways, I would recommend the movie if you want something exciting to watch. You'll think twice about those security cameras next time you are about.
I must say I am glad the bailout failed to pass. I wish congress would listen to the people and drop it. Of course, I am living in fantasy land where congress actually listens to and votes for the will of the people. Maybe we could make a movie about that! I am tired of congress voting to spend our hard earned tax dollars to bail out rich people who were stupid with their money. Let them fall like everyone else who makes a bad business choice or who is fraudulent in their business dealings. The economy will fix itself without the help of our tax money. It is not the job of the government to save a select few (the wealthy) from their own stupidity. I am tired of the attempts to socialize our country. We need to vote everyone out who is currently in the government and get new people-preferably people who have never been in politics. I'm not too jazzed about our current presidential candidates either.
Ok, I've spouted off enough. Go watch a good movie and pretend you live in country where the government actually works for the people.

Updates

Well, Heather had her appointment with the neurologist yesterday. She'd had an EEG back in August so we found out the results today. She still shows signs of seizure activity. Because of that and a break through seizure she had back in December she will not be going off her medication yet. The doctor upped the dosage. She'll need to have another EEG in a year and a half. Just one of those things that we will have to wait and see. We are hoping she will grow out of them so that she won't have to worry about her entire life.
Cora is at Weber tonight for the Weber review. This is their first time marching their entire show for anyone. I hope they do well. I think I mentioned before that they will not be performing at BYU because there were so many apps. They will be performing at Mtn View on Oct 11. We are going to go see her perform then. Anyone else who wants to come, feel free to join us!

Remember....

The posts below, part I and part II, are from an email I received from my mom. I thought it was worth posting here to remind us all what so many people of suffered so that we can have so many freedoms. I didn't post the entire email and I paraphrased a few things. Hopefully, a few more people will get out there come November and exercise this wonderful privilege we have.

Women and the right to vote-Part II

Mrs Pauline Adams in the prison garb she wore while serving a 60 day sentence (above)

HBO has a new movie entitled "Iron Jawed Angels". It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that we could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have our say.

Miss Edith Ainge, of Jamestown, New York (above)

Berthe Arnold, CSU graduate (above)

Conferring over ratification [of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution] at [National Woman's Party] headquarters, Jackson Pl [ace] [ Washington , D.C. ]. L-R Mrs. Lawrence Lewis, Mrs. Abby Scott Baker, Anita Pollitzer, Alice Paul, Florence Boeckel, Mabel Vernon (standing, right))

The movie shows Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. It is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy.
The doctor admonished the men, "Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity."

We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote democratic, republican, or independent, remember to vote.

Helena Hill Weed, Norwalk , Conn. Serving 3 day sentence in D.C. prison for carrying banner, 'Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.')

History is being made.

Women and the right to vote-part I

This is the story of our grandmothers and great-grandmothers; they lived only 90 years ago.

Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed, nonetheless, for picketing the White House, carrying signs, asking for the vote.
Lucy Burns (above)
By the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards, wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of "obstructing sidewalk traffic"
The beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air.

Dora Lewis (above)
They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded "THE NIGHT OF TERROR" on Nov 15, 1917, when the warden at Occoquan in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.

For weeks the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food, all of it colorless slop, was infested with worms.
Alice Paul (above)
When one of their leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

So refresh my memory, Some women won't vote this year because why exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?

Go Red Devils

A rather sad update, Springville band will not be playing at the BYU competition. There were too many apps and they did not get picked :( We will have to go see them at the Timpanogos competition. I'll let everyone know the dates they are playing so you can go see them if you'd like. Springville supporters are supposed to wear white shirts if you go :) They may be playing at the Springville Wal-mart's grand reopening on Oct 1st. The school hasn't decided for sure yet. I'll let you know. They are playing at Weber this coming Tuesday. Also, anyone that wanted to donate towards Cora's band trip-please do so asap. She has another $200 due by Sept 30. She has not earned much towards that yet. The spaghetti dinner didn't go well for her-everyone we know lives too far away lol.

And the Band Played On

Here's some video of what everyone missed tonight. The band played several times during the dinner. The spaghetti was good and best of all, I did not have to cook!!! The band is pretty good. We are looking forward to watching them do their field show at Lavell Edwards Stadium.

Toilet Paper?!

I see I haven't posted anything for a few days so I will update. We had a rather busy weekend. Cora was busy with band all day on Friday since Springville was having their homecoming. The totally creamed Provo in the homecoming game :) Lisa and Miranda spent the night at a friends house committing the crime of toilet papering. I realize I am not innocent when it comes to toilet papering but I would never have told my mom. At least not until years later, (when the statute of limitations had run out and I was no longer living at home). Not only did they tell me what they were doing but their friends mother assisted in the crime/shenanigans. None of my friends mom's would have contributed to my deliquency like that. Ahh, how times have changed. Of course, I can hardly get mad at them considering I did it myself when I was younger. A rite of passage if you will :)
We spent most of Saturday at IKEA wishing we could buy everything and gagging on some woman's perfume walking ahead of us. I think she took a bath in it. ugh.
We are off in a few for a yummy spaghetti dinner that the band is providing. I will write more later!

Those darn German's!

As some of you may know, I've been at LDS Hospital all week for training on a ventilator. The company that makes the vent is Draeger and they are from Germany. Anyways, we've been following along in their translated to American English by a Britain service manual and operating manuals. Let's just say it is frustrating trying to translate what they really mean because it is not always translated very well. Aside from that, it has been interesting learning more about this particular piece of equipment. If any of the IHC hospitals in Utah County ever get this machine, I will be able to fix it, (at least that is the hope ).
Just a few other things about LDS Hospital. We are on the 5th floor for our class where there is pretty much nothing but ripped up rooms and a cat lurking in the ceiling somewhere. There is a hallway with large portraits of, I'm assuming, people who have been on the board or donated or something grand like that. This hallway is very long and comes across like something at Disney Land-you expect the eyes to start moving and following you. There is also what appears to be a secret door in the floor of one room we have been working in. A very strange place ;)
The kids have been busy taking turns with a pretty nasty cold that has kept everyone but Cora home from school a few days (not all at once though). Everyone is still enjoying school so far. Cora is busy this week with homecoming for the highschool. She is playing with the band at a pep rally tonight, then homecoming parade on Friday and the game. She's having a great time with band. I think I would have more fun if I wasn't getting up before the crack of dawn to get her to 6am practices then pick her up around 10pm from different activities. I soo need a clone to do those things for me so I could sleep. I'm sure Cora wishes she could sleep more to but she is young and can handle and I'm getting old and decrepit :)

It's the Great Pumpkin!

Lisa and I were out taking pictures for her photography class and came across an awesome pumpkin patch! You almost expect to see Linus and Snoopy in here. This is the best time of year with pumpkins and not to forget, candy corns! Halloween and fall are the best :)

Update

I haven't put anything up for a few days so I thought I'd just update a little on what's up with us. Heather had her 1 week follow up with the eye doctor. She's starting to turn her head again so see like she was before. She was perfect the day after surgery. The doctor thinks we may need to loosen up her muscle a little more again. We won't know for sure for anther month. He thinks the muscle is tightening up a little again since the surgery. We'll just have to wait and see how things go.
Along with that, everyone seems to be passing around a cold. Yuck, I'm not looking forward to all the sickness that always accompanies the return to school.

Also, Cora is having another fundraiser for her band trip. She is selling tickets to a spaghetti dinner at the Hobble Creek Elementary school cafeteria in Springville. It will be on Sept 15 from 5:30 to 7pm. You can get a family ticket for $20 which includes all immediate family or an individual ticket for $5. Part of the money she collects goes towards her band trip to California. She's working on raising another $300. She made a $200 with her yard sale in June. If you'd rather not have the dinner and were prefer to just donate some money, that is fine also :)

I don't know what's gotten into our cat but he's sure decided that Hector's shoes are the next best thing since cat nip!

Working hard

I thought I would post some pictures of what I was working on at work today. Can you guess what it is?

I was fixing a cell washer for the lab. It's basically a largish centrifuge. The motor needed to be replaced. Just one of the many things that needed fixin' today! Leave it to a three day weekend to cause everything to self destruct!

High Voltage

OK, I had to post this. I was reading one of Dave Barry's columns about the DNC and this next line made me laugh soooo hard. I'm sure you will realize why once you read it....

"I've been to every convention since 1984, and I have to say that Democratic delegates always manage to look good when they engage in group ``rock-n-roll''-style dancing, in stark contrast to Republican delegates, who always look like they're subjects in some kind of cruel mass experiment involving random-firing high-voltage buttock probes."

Wow, what imagery!

Thursday, August 28, 2008

Ouch, that's my eye!

Whew! The surgery is over and Heather is doing well. These are some pictures we took right before she went in to surgery. Notice how happy and weird she is! She is not feeling so well right now. Still trying to shake off the anesthesia and her eye hurts. She is sleeping at the moment. She gets to go see her doctor tomorrow morning for follow up. This is her 5th surgery on her eyes. She is a trooper! She's had so many medical issues but she just keeps on smiling!
We're all very proud of her for being so brave.
