Terrorist trial may go to military tribunal, not court.

Jesus H Christ in the stockade, would someone please tell me a couple things? First, what is the basic difference between Bush and Obama? Second, what happened to the fucking rule of law in the US?

WASHINGTON — Looking to breathe life into President Barack Obama's stalled pledge to close the Guantanamo Bay prison, White House advisers are inching toward recommending military trials for alleged Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed and four accused henchmen.

Attorney General Eric Holder's original plan to try them in a civilian court in New York City met with criticism so fierce that it threatened to derail Obama's promise to shut the U.S. military's Cuban prison.

As difficult as the politics are concerning how and where to try the most notorious terror suspect in U.S. custody, that's only one step toward the even more fraught and complicated goal of closing Guantanamo where Mohammed and nearly 200 other terror detainees remain

As difficult as the politics are concerning how and where to try the most notorious terror suspect in U.S. custody, that's only one step toward the even more fraught and complicated goal of closing Guantanamo where Mohammed and nearly 200 other terror detainees remain.

Closing Guantanamo was a signature promise of Obama's presidency, and it is still unkept well past his original deadline of January. Failing to keep it would have huge implications for the president, both with his base of supporters in the Democratic Party and in his efforts to remake America's image around the globe.

Has Obama accomplished much of anything he promised, you know the things we elected him to do?

Has he undone anything Bush did wrong? Well, except for banning torture during interrogations? Has he eliminated spying on phone calls, emails, mail, bank accounts, medical records of any Americans without obtaining a court order? Has he really upheld American's rights to privacy under The Constitution? And now he intends to stay in Iraq longer than he promised? Has he closed Gitmo?

Sylvestre Reyes Inserts Anti-Torture Provision Into Intelligence Funding Bill

Sylvestre Reyes (D-TX)

Its about time someone tacked an amendment like this onto some sort of bill. Ya never know when another Bush type will come along.

Torturing detainees has been embarrassing, cruel, useless. It also guarantees the same treatment for any US troops who're captured. That whole issue is a black eye for US.

Democratic Congressman Sylvestre Reyes, chair of the House Intelligence Committee, has proposed an amendment to the 2010 Intelligence Authorization Act that would hold any "officer or employee of the intelligence community" who "in the course of or in anticipation of a covered interrogation knowingly commits, or attempts to commit or conspires to commit an act of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment" would face criminal sanctions of up to fifteen years, even life if it results in the death of the detainee.

The amendment, referred to as the "Cruel, Inhuman And Degrading Interrogations Prohibition Act" of 2010, lists several prohibited acts, including waterboarding, "forcing the individual to be naked, perform sexual acts, or pose in a sexual manner", beatings, electric shocks, use of dogs, inducing hypothermia or heat injury, stress positions, deprivation of necessary "sleep, food or medical care" and conducting mock executions.

Other prohibited acts include using the threat of force to "coerce an individual to desecrate that individual's religious artifacts," excessive cold or heat, cramped confinement, prolonged isolation, and use of hooding.

[snip]

Byron York, who first reported the existence of the amendment, said it had already been inserted into the bill and quoted a House Intelligence Committee staffer, presumably from the minority side, who said Republicans would try to strip the measure out of the bill, but not before they tell "people what's going on."

Presumably, this kind of treatment was outlawed by the 2005 Detainee Treatment Act anyway. But given that the only thing that's standing between a future Republican administration and torture might be an executive order, this amendment would strengthen current anti-torture laws by adding the threat of criminal sanctions for those who participate in illegal interrogations.

The Press and Reconciliation

Many people (not you) are leary of reconciliation because big media tries to portray it as something complicated, 'abnormal,' shady.

Kevin Drum makes the case for how simple, ordinary, transparent this process is. And he does a damn fine job of it.

It was created in 1974 as a way of ensuring that annual budgets could be passed without being filibustered.

It has been used to pass the annual budget in all but seven years since 1980. It's a routine procedure used by both Republicans and Democrats.

It was used to pass Ronald Reagan's 1981 tax cut and both of George Bush's big tax cuts.

It was used to pass welfare reform.

Virtually every healthcare reform of the past three decades, including COBRA, EMTALA, S-CHIP, and others has been passed via reconciliation.

There's nothing wrong with the media reporting that Republicans oppose the use of reconciliation to amend the healthcare bill. Of course they do. But they owe it to their audience to explain that reconciliation does nothing more than allow a simple majority vote to pass budgetary issues and that it's been used routinely by both parties for decades. That's just the simple truth.

See? That wasn't so difficult. Now you can pass this on to your friends who are still confused.

John Conyers Jr to hold hearings on OLC report

Sometimes ya just have to do what's right. Especially if it includes proving the integrity of a government agency you're responsible for protecting.

Here's the full release from House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.):

"For years, those who approved torture and abuse of detainees have hidden behind legal memos issued by the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel," Conyers said. "The materials released today make plain that those memos were leglly flawed and fundamentally unsound, and may have been improperly influenced by a desire to tell the Bush White House and the CIA what it wanted to hear."

"The Office of Legal Counsel has a proud tradition of providing independent, high-quality legal advice to the executive branch," Conyers continued. "The materials released today make clear that the lawyers who wrote the torture memos did not live up that tradition. While the department ultimately concluded that the lawyers did not breach their minimum professional obligations, I certainly hold top lawyers at OLC to a higher standard that, as all Americans should.

"Given the serious nature of the issues raised in this report, the committee intends to hold hearings on these matters in the very near future."

All released materials can be found here.

The second coming of Shrub

Glenn Greenwald

I often avoid reading Glenn Greenwald because: 1) I read slowly and 2) he writes as if each word will give him an extra hour of life.

However, this is a must read. For example:

As has been voluminously documented here, one of the most notable aspects of the first year of the Obama presidency has been how many previously controversial Bush/Cheney policies in the terrorism and civil liberties realms have been embraced. Even Obama's most loyal defenders often acknowledge that, as Michael Tomasky recently put it, "the civil liberties area has been [Obama's] worst. This is the one area in which the president's actions don't remotely match the candidate's promises." From indefinite detention and renditions to denial of habeas rights, from military commissions and secrecy obsessions to state secrets abuses, many of the defining Bush/Cheney policies continue unabated under its successor administration.

Despite all that, there is substantial political pressure from all directions for Obama to reverse the very few decisions where he actually deviated from Bush/Cheney radicalism in these areas. In the wake of extreme political pressure, mostly from Democrats, the White House just forced Eric Holder to retreat on his decision to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in New York City, and numerous Democrats now appear prepared to join with the GOP to cut-off funding for civilian trials altogether, forcing the administration to try all Terrorists in military commissions or just hold them indefinitely. The administration has created a warped multi-tiered justice system where only a select few even get civilian trials -- those whom they know in advance they can convict -- yet there are growing signs that the President will abandon even that symbolic, piecemeal nod to due process.

I never expected great things from Obama. Great things rarely happen in Washington D.C., but I did hold out hope he would undo the things Shrub did to fuck up the principals upon which the US was based.

Britain brands Zimbabwean situation "sadism"

Robert Mugabe

So its obvious the moron will attack Zimbabwe next and remove Mugabe because he's little different from Saddam Hussein, right? Don't bet your fucking over-stretched mortgage on it.

No problem here. Zimbabwe has no oil. Or does it?

Oh my fucking God! They might have.

God's speed to you in Zimbabwe. Your days are numbered.

Britain's foreign secretary likened President Robert Mugabe's rule in Zimbabwe to "sadism" on Sunday and said South Africa had a responsibility to do more to bring pressure to bear on its neighbour.

David Miliband said countries had a duty to speak frankly about the crisis in the country as Mugabe's security forces ratchet up their intimidation of opposition leaders ahead of a presidential run-off election on June 27.

"The first thing is to be clear about the sadism, and I use that word advisedly, that's going on ... in Zimbabwe at the moment," Miliband told BBC television.

"People being killed, people being tortured, people being beaten. Election observers being stripped out, election officials being stripped out ... It's important that we speak plainly and frankly about that."

Miliband said he and Prime Minister Gordon Brown had spoken to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon about the situation in the past two days and about the need for more election observers to ensure the run-off is not rigged.

"We can raise this at the U.N. and it's right that we do so because the pressure needs to be on absolutely clearly," he said, saying he hoped for more action from the security council.

"Four million refugees will not even have a vote in this election even if they dared to vote. It's important that the international community is clear about its own perspective because that can give confidence to the people in Zimbabwe."

Britain, the former colonial ruler in Zimbabwe, is usually reluctant to be outspoken in its condemnation of Mugabe as the Zimbabwean president tends to use the past as a stick to beat Britain and other Western powers with colonial histories.

Barack Obama Visits Flood Zone Victims In Illinois

I'm sort of on a twofer jag right now.

A couple comments about this story.

1. Yes. Obama is campaigning and photo ops like this are invaluable and demonstrate his compassion and concern for Americans.

2. I've not read anywhere in the media about the moron visiting the Mid-West. Oh yeah. He's pressing flesh several thousand miles away. No sense in coming back to the US just because of a fucking catastrophe.

Starting with 9/11, which the idiot has milked for all its worth, to Katrina to the Mid-West to military funerals its obvious the moron doesn't and never did give a shit about Americans. I can't wait until he's out of office and hope no one like him ever gets elected again.

Can I get an amen?
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has given hands-on help in

He helped locals in the town of Quincy to fill sandbags to place on the banks of the Mississippi river, which is swelling to dangerous levels.

Authorities predict it will rise to record levels next week.

Mr Obama said: "Since I've been involved in public office we've not seen this kind of devastation."

He pledged to push federal and state governments to provide aid to the affected areas.

Mr Obama had been scheduled to campaign in nearby Iowa, but that state is also badly affected by flooding and he did not want to draw government resources away from battling the problems.

Short timer syndrome

You've all known of people with this. Perhaps even been there yourself.

By definition its someone who has given two weeks notice or otherwise knows they have a short time before being out the door. And at that point their attitude can be either I'll do my best for this outfit until I'm gone or who gives a fuck. The later is most common and will often get you out the door quicker. Not with the moron. He doesn't give a fuck and is immune from early dismissal. Yeah, I'm talking to you Pelosi.

So the moron tells oil companies they can harass polar bears, wants to drill in ANWAR, intends to ignore the SCOTUS when it comes to Guantánamo Bay and the list goes on.

Ah, but the biggie is an attack on Iran. Will short timer syndrome enter into his decision? Probably.

House votes to send impeachment resolution to Judiciary Committee

This is a must read for those who think anything will come of Rep Dennis Kucinich's fucking impeachment measure.

If the goddamn Democrats are unwilling to do anything about Cheney, they sure as hell won't do anything about the moron.

That's your representative government at work. Or rather not doing their jobs at all.
The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to send articles of impeachment against President Bush to the Judiciary Committee for review.

[t]he impeachment resolution's sponsor, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, requested a recorded vote on the motion around 3 p.m. Wednesday, and 20 Republicans joined nearly all Democrats in voting to send the impeachment measure to the committee, according to a vote count on C-SPAN.

The motion passed 251-166.

"It is imperative that Members of Congress have a thorough opportunity to read the Articles of Impeachment and study the documentation," Kucinich said in a news release Tuesday. "When they do, I am confident that they will agree that it is both appropriate and necessary for the Judiciary Committee to begin hearings on the Resolution."

Kucinich took to the floor of the House Monday evening to read his 35 articles of impeachment, accusing Bush of war crimes, breaking his oath of office and misleading Americans to launch an illegal invasion of Iraq. The Ohio Democrat said impeachment was the only way to keep Bush from launching another invasion of Iran.

The Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), already has before it articles of impeachment aimed at Vice President Dick Cheney. Since receiving that impeachment measure in November, the committee has done nothing.

Democratic leaders in the House seem determined to block the latest impeachment measure as well, and it remains all-but-impossible that the House would proceed with impeachment hearings before Bush leaves office.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi is sticking by her earlier pledge to make sure impeaching Bush and Cheney is an option that remains strictly "off the table."

Of course the Democrats voted to move the measure on, realizing its the equivalent of sending it to the round file. They can look like "heroes" to the electorate with no repercussions to them when the measure simply dies in committee.

Bush and Cheney dictator and psychopath’s checklists are complete: time for impeachment

Bush frustrated by questions from the press.

Of course psychopathic behavior can't be included in Dennis Kucinich's (D-OH) 35 Articles of Impeachment filed against George W. Bush [and others - ed]. A person's being a psychopath doesn't justify impeachment.

Most of us deal with fucking psychopaths on a daily basis (Link is to one example only. Hell I worked for one in highway construction who was also my father). It isn't a terribly uncommon condition, but devastating to the US and the world when that personality is in control of the most goddamn destructive and numerous weapons of war in the world.

And when that person has no respect or compassion for the rule of law, Constitution, Bill of rights, Congress, the American people, the judiciary, international law, Geneva Convention, the environment, international treaties, wildlife, brown people, honesty, other world leaders, nations' sovereignty, women and children its no less damaging. Well that might be overstating the case. He probably won't nuke the US even as a false flag attack justifying bombing Iran. Or would he? Just asking.

I was gonna add no respect or compassion for the poor, but I've stated before the fucking moron has no respect for the wealthy either. He's buying friendship from them and a certain amount of lucre for himself. If there's nothing in it for him he would dump them like McCain (another psychopath) dumped his first wife.
I believe we are all aware now that George W. Bush is a psychopath, with a personality disorder characterised by chronic immoral and antisocial behaviour. It will be his only defence, his mental health problem, if the War Crime Tribunals catch up with him one day. I will go through his psychopath’s checklist later. What is important to keep in mind though, is that his full political agenda has not been entirely played out yet, and before it is over, George W. Bush will certainly present a perfect case of a full flesh dictator. We still have the time to stop him, but we won’t for much longer. So let’s explore what is really happening.

George W. Bush and Dick Cheney dictatorship’s checklist, that I had to quickly establish from many websites, and which is not exhaustive, goes something like this: 1) a leader who holds and/or abuses an extraordinary amount of personal power, 2) the power to make laws without effective restraint by a legislative assembly or a Constitution, 3) cult of personality/megalomania (like when someone states that God has spoken to him and told him to go to war, or when a leader portrays himself as the symbol of patriotism), 4) head of the military, association with the military and wearing a military uniform (which Bush did), 5) repression of political or other opponents without abiding by rule of law procedures or moral and ethical code (threatening and succeeding in shutting up one’s opponents, Bush has been highly successful at this), 6) rule by decree (losing the elections and yet proclaiming oneself the ruler), 7) proclamation of a state of emergency to further one’s agenda (9/11), 8) suspension of civil liberties (several terrorist acts, being able to imprison and convict people without due process, use of torture), 9) control of mass media (Fox Network at the very least, and probably most of the mass media since they are all so quiet about all this), 10) suspension of elections following a large scale false flag/government sponsored terrorism event.

As you can see from my perhaps incomplete checklist, everything has already been accomplished, except for the last item of suspension of elections through a state of emergency. Wikipedia states that modern dictators have usually come to power in times of emergency, and so we can certainly expect that someone as desperate as George W. Bush has shown, in order to remain in power for as long as possible, and by any means possible, must be seeking another state of emergency to establish fully his dictatorship.

It is entirely predictable and likely to happen, it is just a question of time, months at most, probably weeks. One could even argue that elections have already been suspended twice, through cheating in Florida and other States, and manipulation of voting machines. Also that the main false flag/government sponsored terrorism events could be 9/11 and other terrorist acts in London and Spain. All of which point to false flag events.

It is however reasonable to believe that the worse is still to come, because it is the final act standing before absolute dictatorship, and, it is the only way by which George W. Bush and his partners in crime will be able to remain in power past next November. Hence, we already have a dictatorship, although not an absolute one, and it is time to impeach the dictator and his associates before the war agenda against us is complete.

I don’t pretend to know all about psychopathic behaviours and dictators, and perhaps it is a good thing, because then I will speak about it in terms which can reach the collective consciousness. These topics are highly important right now, unfortunately the experts are only able to write about it in terms which limit the reach of their discourse to a few other experts. So they speak together in that language no one can understand, and ultimately they forget to raise the alarm when a perfect text book case shows up in the world and is about to enslave us all. Let’s raise the alarm for them.

George W. Bush psychopath’s checklist is borrowed from Wikipedia under the psychopath’s entry (Dr. Robert D. Hare’s Psychopathy Checklist). Of course, no psychopath is meant to exhibit all of those symptoms, however, the more symptoms you exhibit, the more psychopath you are. It is important to understand that most psychopaths are pathological liars and are quite capable to show a convincing mask of sanity (the title of a book by Dr. Hare). In George W. Bush’s case though (and to a certain extent Dick Cheney), the mask has fallen and there is enough data to prove that most of these factors apply to his personality:

Factor 1: Aggressive narcissism: 1) Glibness / superficial charm, 2) Grandiose sense of self-worth, 3) Pathological lying, 4) Cunning / manipulative, 5) Lack of remorse or guilt, 6) Shallow. 7) Callous / lack of empathy, 8) Failure to accept responsibility for own actions, 9) Promiscuous sexual behaviour. Factor 2: Socially deviant lifestyle: 1) Need for stimulation / proneness to boredom, 2) Parasitic lifestyle, 3) Poor behavioural control, 4) Lack of realistic, long-term goals, 5) Impulsivity, 6) Irresponsibility, 7) Juvenile delinquency, 8) Early behaviour problems, 9) Many short-term marital relationships, 10) Revocation of conditional release.

Former TV reporter claims network told her to soft pedal Bush bad news

Jessica Yellin

And you thought Scott McClellan's book caused a tsunami of approbation (that's snark, folks) from the White House and the rabid right bloggers.
CNN's Jessica Yellin talked to Anderson Cooper about Scott McClellan's tell-all memoir and agreed with the former press secretary that White House reporters "dropped the ball" during the run-up to war. But Yellin went much further, revealing that news executives--presumably at ABC News, where she'd worked from July 2003 to August 2007--actively pushed her not do hard-hitting pieces on the Bush administration. "The press corps was under enormous pressure from corporate executives, frankly, to make sure that this was a war presented in way that was consistent with the patriotic fever in the nation and the president's high approval ratings," Yellin said.. . .

A shocked Cooper jumped in, asking, "You had pressure from news executives to put on positive stories about the president?"

"Not in that exact. . . They wouldn't say it in that way, but they would edit my pieces," Yellin said. "They would push me in different directions. They would turn down stories that were more critical, and try to put on pieces that were more positive. Yes, that was my experience."

Unfortunately this is also a serious indictment of on-air personalities. She did what she was told. She accepted their edits and just threw up her hands. I'm not condemning her. A job is a job and we all compromise to some extent to hold on to what we have.

Don't ask. I have no clue what she has on her feet in the picture.

Children in Katrina trailers may face lifelong ailments

This is just one of the horrid elements of the idiot's legacy.

Appointing incompetents always has predictable, unfortunate consequences.
The anguish of Hurricane Katrina should have ended for Gina Bouffanie and her daughter when they left their FEMA trailer. But with each hospital visit and each labored breath her child takes, the young mother fears it has just begun.

"It's just the sickness. I can't get rid of it. It just keeps coming back," said Bouffanie, 27, who was pregnant with her now 15-month-old daughter, Lexi, while living in the trailer. "I'm just like, 'Oh God, I wish like this would stop.' If I had known it would get her sick, I wouldn't have stayed in the trailer for so long."

The girl, diagnosed with severe asthma, must inhale medicine from a breathing device.

Doctors cannot conclusively link her asthma to the trailer. But they fear she is among tens of thousands of youngsters who may face lifelong health problems because the temporary housing supplied by the Federal Emergency Management Agency contained formaldehyde fumes up to five times the safe level.

Bush wants $600 million for Iraq police; but cuts aid to U.S. cops

This is a quick quiz. Whatever you say, you'll be right because I don't know the answer.

The moron in the White House is primarily responsible for the welfare and safety of people in what country?

Your answer __________________

NO! NO! NO! Don't try to write your answer on the monitor. Silly rabbit.
At the same time the Bush administration has been pushing for deep cuts in a popular crime-fighting program for states and cities, the White House has been fighting for approval of $603 million for the Iraqi police.

In truth I can't believe how, if there are two choices in a situation, I always disagree with the one the idiot chooses. ALWAYS!

My stupid moment

This is what I think. Hey, its my blog and I'm free to demonstrate how stupid I am and regularly do.

I got it!

The Bush family has large holdings in oil companies. The moron owes big oil for their monetary support of him and daddy. But neither of these explain why the idiot-in-chief feels compulsively compelled to give big oil the keys to the castle.

Nope, none of that.

Shrub is buying friends.

He's like the pathetic little boy who has an embarrassing personality as perceived by others and needs to bribe the other kids to like him. Perhaps he even smells funny.

After leaving office the clown will undoubtedly be hired by big oil as a "consultant". Consultant is a polite word for a fucking lobbyist. He won't be allowed anywhere near actual decision making because he's just too goddamn stupid. They'll hire him because of his contacts which will be somewhat suspect because the GOP won't control Congress and won't be in the White House.

The moron and his family

I just don't understand, but I may have mental issues.

Don't the moron and his family have a clue about how to behave when in public with ever present cameras?

I mean, if you're at someone's house, especially your in-law's house, don't you act prim and proper? If a picture is taken of you wouldn't it show you smiling or laughing and otherwise exhibiting apt comportment?

OK, I'm not referring to the time after three bottles of Cold Duck©. That was an aberration, an anomaly if you will and I still wasn't as silly looking as the ol' bro-in-law who was riding his young daughter's tricycle. At least there are no pictures showing otherwise.
