Brightest Fitness Gym Review

Brightest Fitness Gym is a neighborhood gym or "bakal" gym located at PRC Makati. Situated at the 5th floor of the same building as the SSS and right in front of McDonalds PRC.

Introduction to a "Bakal Gym"

This gym is on my way home. I noticed it a few times during my commute so I decided to check this out after giving up on my Level X Fitness Gym membership. The rate is cheap with P60/session, P600/month and P1200/quarter. As posted in their fan page, they have ample set of equipment that I could use for my program so I dropped by one Friday to do my workout. I started with the daily rate of P60 and went back the next day to pay for the monthly rate.

It is a good example of a "bakal gym". The place doesn't have air conditioners. They don't even have electric fans. They don't have olympic bars and bumper plates. But they have a cheaper version of barbells and plates though that can still help you proceed with your workout. They don't have thread mills but they have cardio machines to help you warm up. They have ample space to do your workout but not so much, just enough to get things done. The people who work out there know their stuff and would be there to finish their sets.

For a couple of weeks, I went to this gym. I appreciate the "feel" of the gym as it keeps me motivated to finish my workout. However, some gymgoers are too into their own workout that they hog machines for 30 minutes to hours. My workout time had to be extended from 45 minutes to 2 hours since I have to wait for them to finish.

On a holiday, I dropped by there and there are still a number of people doing their workout.

Gym Review

In standards of a "bakal gym", the space is big. The equipment is as expected, given the price, but it is enough to make programs work. You can't drop the weights due to both quality of the equipment and the location of the gym (5th floor so 4th floor peeps might hear dropping weights). This meant you can't go too heavy on your own.

The fee is cheaper when you commit to long term progress. For example, P60/day turns to P40/day when you workout for 4 times a day for a month. However, they don't have caliber equipments like olympic bars so if you do workouts on a different gym or in a standard lifting event, you cannot have a baseline of weights you can carry. (This should be a small deal but I am maarte.)

The gym also has a lot of equipment hogs that is the reason for extended workout times.

But nonetheless it is a great gym to workout in.

Level X Fitness Gym Review

Level X Fitness Gym is a small gym located in Buma Building in San Antonio Village, Makati. It is located beside the Mega Pro Karaoke Place and a few steps away from Ayala Avenue. This gym is you typical gym that has machines, weights and a regular cardio class schedules

Introduction though Metrodeal

I was trying to save money by finding a cheaper gym to workout in when I stumbled into a voucher in Metrodeal. The offer was a month of unlimited gym use with a personal trainer assessment for P999. I grabbed the opportunity and scheduled my first PT (Personal Trainer) Assessment. If you are interested to try this deal too, check out this link.

First Visit

I went to the gym after office hours at around 5:30 pm. I had trouble finding the place as google maps was pointing me on a longer route. (It turns out walking at Chino Roces Extension and San Antonio Village is a quicker route)

Where to squat? No space during peak hours
(Photo from their FB Page)

Upon arrival, I found that the gym was small and had little space. Coach JC guided me through the assessment which was your typical assessment including 1 mile run, reaching your feet, the star position and push-ups test. If you have been assessed by Fitness First and Gold's Gym. It is basically the same thing. This is ideal practice for beginners but for seasoned folks like me, this is pretty useless.

Consecutive Visits

I have been to the gym following a basic body building program for a couple of weeks in this gym. I found that it is too small to do an actual workout. Given the peak hours of 5:30pm to 8:00pm, it proved to be too small to complete a decent set.

On one day, I was doing sets of squats with a minute rest. I was too difficult to complete my set following this protocol as after doing 5 reps of squats. I had to wait for the guy on the cable machine to finish his set and the lady on the floor doing lunges before I could proceed to my next set, The sets which could have been done in 10 minutes was completed in an hour.

I also had no space to do a tabata workout on the floor so I had to omit that to my program. There wasn't enough space to jump anywhere as machines were cramped up in that gym and there were too many personal trainers walking around.

Generally I decided to not use my month's worth of unlimited gym use as it would just be a waste of my precious time.

Gym Review

The gym is conveniently located inside San Antonio Village and nearby Ayala Avenue so it would be great for residents and Makati employees. It is an ideal gym for beginners as there would be numerous personal trainers who could assist you in starting your fitness goals. However, this gym is not recommended for people who know their way around the gym as the little space left to do an actual work out will probably be used up by a personal trainer and his client. Group classes are also a failure because the room for that is too small to do anything unless there are only 3 people in that class which won't happen.

How can you maximize this group class exercise
when you don't have the room to  move? (Photo from their FB Page)

Personal Trainers in this gym, in my opinion, exhibited behaviors wherein they are only after your money. One example is when this trainer was checking his phone while his client was doing a set. Another instance was when another trainer was carrying his client's barbell for him, which will not help the client's progress, at all.

Someone may actually get results in this gym but they must work in odd hours so they have the gym to themselves. Otherwise, looking for another gym is a better option.

For more information on this gym, check out their facebook page.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is the True North Fitness Bootcamp?
The True North Fitness Bootcamp is a military-style fitness training that delivers an intimate group fitness experience. It’s all about getting fit together. While joining a group may seem daunting to some, taking TNFB will make you feel part of a pack and in a matter of minutes you’ll be drawing strength and having fun with your fellow bootcampers as you jump over, crawl under, and run around obstacles with them. TNFB offers a highly sociable way to health and fitness, so you’ll get plenty of opportunities to get to know your fellow participants after each session.

How extensive is the bootcamp?
We at True North Training Camps envision our military fitness training bootcamp to be as extensive as it can get. From the time you sign up for the course, you will be immersed on a fitness adventure like no other and it will be both physically stimulating and exciting at the same time. There will be regular calisthenics, daily roadruns (running in cadence) and scheduled physical challenges that participants will undergo to test their respective fitness levels. We will throw in as many surprises as needed to stir the interest of the participants and engage them in a variety of physical challenges that will catapult them into the next level. It may be tough for some who would take the course but we will assure them that they can be prepared to take any physical challenges that they would want to engage in at the end of their training.

What would the modules look like?
The True North Fitness Bootcamp modules are tailored from the military fitness training manuals. As such, we at True North Training Camps have developed a “civilian-friendly” version of the physical exercises being used by the Philippine Army, the Air Force and the Navy to maintain and improve their fitness levels. From the regular Army dozen exercises to the more rigorous scuba and airborne exercises and even to the extreme, rangers and navy SEALs physical fitness regimen, participants will not get bored with the variety of physical training and exercises that they will undergo. Every session is different from the last. With highly-trained instructors to lead every session, each has their own unique way of delivering a highly effective outdoor workout. TNFB is a whole body workout designed to improve speed, agility, strength and stamina through team and individual exercises, circuits and other competitive physical challenges. Every aspect of the class is a challenge, but being in a group, you won’t find your motivation dulled by repetition. You’ll be doing something new with someone new every time, building a sense of camaraderie within the group. We guarantee that you will experience an enjoyable, effective workout through team challenges, paired exercises, and group activities.

How long is the module? (days/weeks)
Each module will typically lasts for 10-20 sessions usually performed 3-4 times a week. Each session lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours. These modules were programmed in such a way that every participant will get the full benefit of their physical fitness activity. Modules are programmed for basic, advance and extreme physical fitness activities. It is up to the fitness level of each participant which module they will fall under. We highly encourage those who are just starting with their fitness regimen to take it gradually starting with the basic and advancing to the more difficult and physically challenging modules.

We also offer free trial classes to give you the opportunity to experience for the first time what True North Fitness Bootcamp is all about. Just go to any of our venues, fill out a form and try our classes and experience how effective TNFB really is. Think of the difference it will make to your health, fitness and wellbeing when you come along to classes every week. In addition, we guarantee that you’ll have plenty of fun and make some new friends while you’re getting fitter and stronger.

How many participants per module per class? How many trainers per class?
The TNFB is tailored for an average of about 15-20 participants per instructor. This small group of participants per instructor ratio is designed so that you’ll never run the risk of doing an exercise wrong, nor will you be able to skip any parts of the class. In addition, the instructor can tailor the class to suit the ability and fitness levels of that group on that day making sure that everyone is suitably challenged and no-one gets left behind. We can also combine the groups to form one class of about 150 maximum participants where one instructor will be demonstrating a particular exercise for a session, and the other instructors will be supervising and guiding the participants.

What’s a typical TNFB session like?
There is no ‘typical’ TNFB session. Each instructor is different and each session will be varied to stop both your mind and body from getting bored. It’s a whole body workout designed to improve your strength, stamina, speed, and agility in a fun and interesting way. We guarantee that some of the exercises we will do will be completely new to you. Sessions start with a warm up followed by at least 50-120 minutes of individual, pairs and team exercises and end with a cool down and stretching exercises.

Are all modules done in the early morning? Are there fitness sessions in the evening?
TN Fitness Bootcamp sessions are normally done in the early mornings but we are also conducting evening sessions on select venues to cater to those who want to participate after office hours.

What’s the composition of our fitness instructors?
TNFB instructors all have two things in common - a military background and fitness qualifications. They are either currently serving or have served in the Armed Forces of the Philippines and they all have relevant military or personal training fitness qualifications. This simply means that our instructors are responsible, experienced and knowledgeable in the implementation of the modules. They are also effective in motivating and getting the best out of people.

How do the instructors qualify the level of fitness of participants?
To be able to make our classes effective and fun to our participants and allow them to exercise at their optimum, we usually divide the participants according to three main ability groups: red for beginners, blue for intermediates and green for advanced participants. If our venues allow bigger number of participants, we further sub-divide the groups so that everyone gets the most appropriate workout for their fitness level. This is done to make the fitness training suitable for everyone.

Red – is for people who currently do little or no exercise or are returning to fitness training after a break (i.e. following injury, illness or post natal).
Blue – is for those who have worked their way up from a Red bib or those who have a reasonable standard of fitness already. Intermediate classes are either a great way to challenge your speed, strength, agility and stamina and take your fitness to the next level.
Green – is not for the faint hearted. This is where we challenge the fittest participants to their maximum levels. This is for those who are now fit enough to be pushed to their limit and beyond.

Whichever group you join you’ll be guaranteed with an effective workout with people with a similar level of fitness. Every week, you’ll work hard, you will be challenged and you’ll have fun and make progress that you’ll be able to see and feel.

How are the levels of fitness of participants determined?
At the end of every module we conduct physical assessment tests to determine the level of fitness of every participant and assess whether they have improved physically from taking the course. The TNFB Fitness Assessment is a series of exercises against the clock based on the Army Fitness Test, which we have adapted as a way of monitoring your progress whilst training with TNFB. In addition, we also administer other physical challenges to determine the level of fitness of every participant like taking the 5K, 10K, 15K fun runs and
21K half marathon; the 15K forced-march (with a 35–lb rucksack); the obstacle course and rope courses; and, The 5K Guerilla Race, a 5K cross-country marathon with 12 different obstacles that participants will negotiate from start to finish.
We recommend that you take your Physical Fitness Assessment every three months or after every module so that you can monitor your fitness level as there is no point in doing any fitness training if it is not quantified.

Do I need to be super-fit to join the bootcamp?
Not required – but you need to be committed to improving your level of fitness with a good workout. Don’t worry if you lack the motivation – we’re here to help you get fit. We cater to all levels of fitness by dividing the class into ability groups, red for beginner, blue for intermediate and green for advanced.

Do I need to check with a Doctor before I attending a class?
You should complete and sign our health questionnaire (it’s part of the free trial class registration process) and hand it to your instructor before you start your first class. Women who are pregnant should check with their doctors before starting any class. In addition, we require our participants to fill out and sign our waiver form that they are fit to undergo strenuous activities as required by the bootcamp.

What should I wear? Do I need any special equipment?
A decent pair of outdoor running shoes is all you need. Fashion trainers are not advisable as they offer little support or grip and you may run the risk of injury if you wear them to a session. Other than that, an old t-shirt on top and shorts, tracksuit bottoms or running leggings are ideal. Some exercises involve getting down on the ground so be prepared to get a little bit dirty – it’s part of the fun! We may not be able to guarantee the weather but we can guarantee that you’ll be sweating by the end of each session so make sure you have something to put on after the session has finished.

If possible, please arrive in your attire as changing facilities in parks are limited – though we do try to position our session venues close to public conveniences.

Specialist equipment – apart from a good pair of running shoes, any equipment required for the exercises on sessions that will require a different set of physical challenges will be announced by the instructor so that each participant can prepare accordingly.

Where do I put my valuables?
For personal safety, please try to avoid bringing valuables to the classes but if you have to do so, you may put it inside your own vehicles or you may use the instructors’ or the TN Fitness vehicle to store your valuables/change of clothing etc.

Do I need to bring my own water?
You’re welcome to bring your own water and/or isotonic drinks for before or after the session. The instructors do carry plenty of water and there will be water breaks during the class. Please make sure you are hydrated before you arrive at the venues.

#FFLetsGetPersonal: 10 Sessions with my Fitness First Personal Trainer

One of the perks of being one of the Fitness First blogger ambassadors is entitlement to 10 sessions with a PT (Personal Trainer) from my home gym. During the launching of the #FFLetsGetPersonal, I had a taste of training with the PTs but having it regularly for a few weeks was a different experience.

Meeting Personal Trainers in Fitness First

Fitness First had came up with a website to put personal training and its members closer together so finding a more suitable PT for you is easier. More information about it can be found in this post or visit the PT website yourself. I tried the website myself and the PT I chose in the site contacted me weeks later for a free session.

with Personal Trainer Peter

The PT who was assigned to me was chosen the old fashioned method, it means they were chosen by the bosses of the branch. I was assigned to Peter Pable. He was also the same person who showed CJ and me FF RSC Makati the first time we signed up for membership so I recognized him when we scheduled the first session.

Assessment and Training Sessions

The first session was all about getting know what my goals are and where my fitness level is. We first took my measurements of body weight and body fat percentages with the Tanita machine. After which, he asked me to do a series of exercises to test out different aspects of fitness.

Running is part of our warm up

One of the goals that I expressed to Peter was I wanted to have a stronger upper body so most of our workouts would include upper body movements. Some exercises include bicep curls, skull crushers, dips and others.
Star!

Midway to our 10 session schedule, we had another assessment where I got negative results because I apparently cannot drink alcohol and do cardio before an assessment. But Peter still tried to improve my results by making me do a lot of total body circuits with upper body movement. Sometimes, our sessions would exceed 1 hour but it won't be a problem.

Results and Review

After almost 2 months of work with Peter, I was able to increase my fitness score from 16 to 17. Included in that progress was increasing my distance with the treadmill, adding reps in my push ups and increasing seconds to my planks and star pose. In terms of weight, I lost almost 2 kilograms and 1% body fat. Lastly, my metabolic age decreased from 25 to 22. Since we were doing different upper body movements, I have no way to measure my progress but I have been feeling stronger.

Results

I would recommend availing of a personal trainers to people who are new to fitness, intermediate fitness enthusiasts who would like to get rid of their training plateaus or everyone who has a specific fitness goal. People who don't have an idea on where they wanna go or what they want to happen would just be wasting their money. But if you know what you want, you need a personal trainer to get you there. Check out asking for Peter's services in Fitness First RSC-Makati. He'll make sure you will be working hard while supporting you in every step. He won't be a drill sergeant but someone helping you towards your goals.

Personally, I considered this type of training early last year (2013) as I wanted to progress more and circuit training was starting to get boring. But the universe decided to introduce crossfit to me and I chose to stick with it. My stay with Fitness First would mostly be for group exercises (GX).

For those who want in Fitness First, you need to decide on your goals and seek the guidance of a personal trainer. It will be worth the investment!

Personal Training in Fitness First

A Personal Trainer is a fitness professional who instructs and motivates you during your workouts. Hiring one will ensure you to attain your goals. Yes, you could work out on your own but with the help of a PT you are sure to be doing the right things in order to be one step closer to that dream body or that weight goal. Fitness First, one of the biggest gym chains in the Philippines, offers that service.

Fitness First Starter Pack

Introduction to Fitness First

Fitness First is a household name when it comes to fitness clubs. You either live somewhere near a branch (if you live in Metro Manila) or know someone who works out here. I have been a visitor or a member to a numerous fitness clubs, especially in Makati, but I haven't been inside one branch of Fitness First until a few days ago. I visited Fitness First Fort for the launch of the Personal Training Micro site (more on this later). My initial impression on the gym is that it looks the same as any gym with cardio machines, free weights and a group exercise room, where the launch was held. One difference is a cycling class room and a free area with the newest fitness equipment like the TRX, medicine balls, bosu balls, kettle bells and free weights. The free weights area is extra interesting for me since I think you could do a number of circuit workouts that is available in the web that you could replicate in that area. It could look like your home gym in your fitness first gym.

No more excuses in Fitness First!!!

For more information on Fitness First, check out their official website.

Personal Training Microsite

On November 4, Fitness First Philippines will be launching the Let's Get Personal Micro site. This website aims for members and non-members to see personal training in a different light. Most people would think that working out with a personal trainer is like joining an army/navy/marine like training with a drill sergeant barking orders but it is not. According to the success stories of personal training in fitness first, their experience are far from that notion. In their stories, they saw their personal trainers are friends who support and push them to their goals. In the website, you could see the PT's stories in the videos section. The trainers featured are from trainers all over Asia including one of our own, PT Ron.

Fit and Healthy Success Stories of Personal Training in Fitness First

Also, the micro site's general purpose is to find you the best possible PT whose expertise matches your goals and your lifestyle. In the site, you are asked a few questions and the system will match you to 3 possible PTs in your area. You will also be awarded one free session so you could see if they are the best fit for you.

URL: http://fitnessfirst-letsgetpersonal.com/

A taste of personal training in Fitness First

After a quick briefing on the micro site, they gave out the questionnaires in that will be used in the micro site and manually assigned us to our PT for the day. The fitness heads assigned me to PT Ronald from Alabang. He, first, showed me the rest of the gym and then, took my measurements using a TANITA machine. He explained the results. Basically, I needed to gain weight. We also discussed my fitness history and my goals. I wanted to work on three things, strength, flexibility and speed (priority ko yung first two). I also worked out that morning so I wanted to rest from lifting heavy weights.

With the rest of the blogger ambassadors

Ronald assisted me with the whole workout. We started with a 10 minute warm up in the treadmill. After which, we started with the workout. We did the 60 minute session in the free weights area. The first series of exercises involved me using the TRX and the bosu ball. Later, we moved on to adding dumbbells in the workout. I was asked to do different exercises for the whole body including TRX pushups, rows, bosu ball squats and many more. Ronald had me working the whole hour with a minute exercise between each circuit. Halfway through the workout, Ronald instructed me to move in a different part of the free weights area. Then, I was doing a mixture of stretching and core exercises, still in circuit style. We ended the session with an assisted stretch for the whole body.

Stretching exercises (Photo by Bee)

I found the session tiring but on point. At the beginning of the session, we discussed what I wanted out of the workout and he delivered. I wanted to concentrate on strength and he had me doing TRX, bosu ball and weights. I wanted to improve my flexibility and he had me doing stretching coupled with core workouts. Lastly, I wanted to work on speed so he incorporated plyometrics with the workout done in circuit style.

Post workout with Ronald

Members who are not achieving their fitness goals and non-members who wants something done should check out the personal training in Fitness First. In connection, they should use the micro site in matching them to a PT so they could work with the right professional who shall be guiding them to their progress.

A session includes doing situps, rope climbs, parallel bars, tire flips, running through tires, ropes, pullups, pushups and a lot more.

This is worth a try as it is a rougher version of circuit training in a functional training gym. If you are not joining the race, a session is worth less than P200.

My Medicard Metafit Camp Experience

Metafit is a four minute exercise routine that enables one to burn up to 600 calories in a few minutes of exercise. Doing this form of exercise promotes higher metabolism and energy, stronger bones and lower blood sugar. It consists of fast and intense bursts of anaerobic exercises. This kind of workout has been scientifically proven to help the body release growth hormones that counter the effects of aging.

Bloggers with the Medicard - MetaFit Team

Started on June 10, Medicard and Jim Saret's Medicard Team, consisting of Coach Ken, Coach Irene and biggest loser finalists Hazel and Raffy (who are also serving as supportive coaches in the program), have forged a partnership to organize the Medicard - Meta Fit  Fitness Camp Season 2 Leg 1 at the Medicard Lifestyle Center in Paseo de Roxas, Makati. For details on joining the next 2 legs (total of 3 legs for this season) happening on July to October at different venues across the Metro Manila area, check out the Medicard Philippines facebook page.

A taste of Meta Fit

On June 8, I was fortunate enough to be one of the bloggers who were invited for a taste of the Medicard - Metafit experience that enrollees will be doing for June 10 to July 5 for the Fitness Camp Season 2 Makati Leg. I had experience doing Meta Fit workouts in some of the sessions of the Ayala Triads so I was already expecting doing a series of exercises in quick time. We started with a few stretches and a short warm up.

Warm Up

Honestly, I thought the workout was going to be easier compared to Cross Fit WODs that I had tried in the past (Metafit - 4 minutes; CrossFit - 10+ minutes) so this will be not be easy but doable. Here was the workout:
  • 10 jumping jacks
  • 10 squats
  • 10 pushups
  • 10 lunges for each leg (20 in total)
As many rounds as possible for 4 minutes.

AMRAP Workout

Sounds "easy". I didn't go all out at first as I was saving energy towards the end but lo and behold the 4 minute was already over and I finished 4 rounds and 5 jumping jacks. I did more than the expected 3 rounds and I was happy but crazy folks could do 7 which is still great that means I wasn't that crazy yet (TALAGANG YET?).

Round 1: Squats + Push ups

My Introductory Week in Bliss Yoga Manila

Bliss Yoga Manila is a yoga studio that offers classes of different yoga disciplines. It is located in Unit 203 Plaza One Hundred, VA Rufino Street corner Dela Rosa, Brgy. San Lorenzo, Makati City.

In a real yoga studio

I love yoga. In a yoga class, you breathe deeply and meditate while stretching your body and strengthening your core. I usually attend the hour long classes in whatever gym I am enrolled in. If time doesn't permits me to practice yoga at the gym, I have home videos to guide me. But the best place for a yoga class is a yoga studio.

I bought an introductory week pass from a discount voucher from Cash Cash Pinoy. Regularly, it would cost P1,000 but I got it for P500. This was my opportunity to do yoga on a real yoga studio. Most yoga studios are not accessible for me so I settle for the classes in gyms and at home.

My introductory week card

After several schedule changes, I dropped by the studio, which is a 5 minute walk from my office, and signed me up for the next available class. To my surprise, the clients are regular attendees so I guess they already tapped into their market and was just sharing the space with the group deal option.

On my first class, I brought a yoga mat, a water bottle and a small towel. Those are the things that I usually bring in a yoga class. To my surprise, everyone else had brought an extra towel to cover their mats. As it turns out, the yoga class is done is an above room temperature environment. The towel is to keep you from slipping off your mat. The class was headed by Matty and she guided us through different yoga poses in her Vinyasa Yoga class for an 75 minutes or something. Some of the power poses was different from the usual poses we do in the yoga class. I gave it a try but I can't even stretch my legs that far away from my body. I told her it was my first time so she gave us options but since it wasn't my first time to do yoga so I could perform some of the poses. The experience was definitely refreshing. The environment was a surprise but the heat makes our bodies more equipped to test our flexibility so I welcomed the change. At the end of the class, I was pleasantly surprise with a welcome letter from Matty.

Welcome Letter from Matty

I tried two more classes with Bianca in her Vinyasa Flow class and Roland in his Vinyasa Yoga class. In those classes, I found the need to use a towel on the yoga mat as my sweat had stopped me from doing some of the poses as I kept slipping.

Namaste

Overall, I love my introductory week in Bliss Yoga Manila.I would do it again given my schedule permits me. I can't commit to a more regular practice in the studio yet but I welcome the occasional classes with P500 drop in rate. Currently, they are offering 6 months unlimited passes for P4,000 monthly (June promo only).

Rip 60 (Exercise Equipment and Program) Review

Rip 60 is a suspension training tool that uses rotation to further challenge the athlete in his workout. I first tried rip 60 in a class in the FTX Gym. Through heart pumping classes lead by Connie Fortich, I experienced suspension training with a challenge of rotation in her 60 minute classes. During those classes, we warmed up through burpees, jumping jacks, mountain climbers and squats before doing whole body routines with Rip 60. My first weeks doing the class, I felt my body growing which made me go to more classes. When my  membership expired and I moved to 360 fitness, I replaced rotation with suspension training with a jungle gym. so Bye, Rip 60!

Working out with Rip 60

When I returned to the US for my onshore support work on October 2012, I decided to do the Rip 60 program. I got a good deal on E-bay and won the auction so I got myself the equipment. (Yes, I now own one!) Weeks before doing the program I was on a hiatus to regular training so I gained weight and I was eating unhealthily. Starting the program was a welcome change.

Kettlebell Swings are required for Week 5

At around that time, my accommodation in Delaware had an extra room. I cleaned that room up and made it my home gym, hanging Rip 60 at the closet door. Rip 60 program consists of 12 DVDs that should be done within 60 days. The first 8 weeks had me playing a DVD and following the instruction in 3 to 4 days of the week. The workouts were lead by Jeremy Strom. Warm ups and cool downs are almost the same for all the DVDs. I think they filmed 2 warm up sessions and a cool down session and edited it in all the DVDs. Strom is a dull guy as compared to Beach Body people. I sometimes felt myself sleepy with his voice and tone. Also, having one DVD per week is not that exciting but the dvds progresses from beginners to advanced. The bonus DVDs by Jillian Michael and George St. Pierre were great. My schedule then was pretty full so I only tried it once but it was more exciting the regular DVDs. Exercise routines were challenging enough for me. I love the core exercises as I get to maximize the workout with rotation. Overall, it was a good mix of challenging and doable routines.

Progress

What I like the most about Rip 60 is the 60 day diet which helped me develop a balance diet, which I still practice until now. Results weren't that big but people around me told me that I lose weight because of this program, diet and exercise routine.

For hardcore fitness enthusiast, this program is not that great but this could be a good point to start for beginners.

Insanity (Exercise Program) Review

Insanity is an 60 day exercise program designed with a concept called Max Interval Training. In interval training, an athletes does an routine with moderate heart rate and with in 30 secs gets the heart pumping to 80% of the maximum heart rate. In max interval training, an athlete does the opposite he does heart pumping exercises and rest with a moderate heart rate for 30 seconds before giving it another go. You repeat this with different routines until the hour is over and you lying on the floor gasping for air or dying of exhaustion.

Photo from the BeachBody website

I have done this program from July 2012 until September 2012. The exercises are so intense that I always miss a workout or three within the prescribed week plan as I needed to rest. The exercises are all body weight exercises so you don't need to buy anything else but the DVD. But be ready to jump around your room as you'll be doing plyo in most of the routines. You begin the program with a test that will help you track your progress. In my case, I improved a lot if you compare my Day 1 results against my Day 60 result. Then for the first 4 weeks, you are tasked to do 1 hour workouts that will make your eyes pop. Try it out and you'll be gasping for air in the warm-up. Then you have to go harder after that. At the first two weeks, I was struggling but warm up came easy after that. If you're not stronger after this program, you didn't do it.

May difference ba? :S

Before heading to the second month, you get to do one routine that seems like you are relaxing but you'll be balancing for your dear life. Legs, arms, shoulders and your body will be working to keep you pushing until that week.

At the second month, things progress with sessions lasting 90 minutes. My favorite routine in this series is the Sports Conditioning DVD as you get to run, jump hurdles, play basketball and many more. You'll understand how when you try the program out.

60+ day Progress

I did this program while preparing for a 21k run so I attribute my weight loss partially to this program. I also had too much fun in the kitchen and ignored the diet plan so I can't be one of those success stories you see in the infomercial but one thing I could assure you is that this program will make you stronger. And you would be doing too much to be bored.

Trial at CrossFit MNL Makati CBD Branch

Map from CFMNL Makati

On March to April 2013, CrossFit MNL Makati CBD had organized free WODs (Workout of the Day) in Legazpi Park. They modified the WODs so the numerous participants won't have to use any equipment. The crowd was 20-40 people which made it a big pain to actually use kettle bells, dumbbells and other gym equipment so they modified everything so we'll be able to use our body weight for exercises. I attended at least 3 sessions before they held their last session. The workout started with a 15 minute warm up composed of a run and a mixture of body weight exercises and dynamic stretching  Then, the coaches instructed us about the WOD and we do all the rounds we could do for 10-15 minutes. At the end of the session, we do a little cool down and they gave us GCs to a nearby restaurant.

Opening Week Trials

As a treat for those who supported the Free WODs in Legazpi Park, CrossFit MNL Makati CBD branch had decided to give trial WODs for free on its opening week. I grabbed the opportunity to satisfy my curiosity on this fitness community. Usually, trials in CrossFit gyms or Boxes (as CrossFitters would call it) charges a fee of P500 or more for trial workouts. This is a deal for those who would like to give it a try as Drop In rates are usually P750.

The Makati Box from Makati Minotaur

We started the class with briefing from the instructing coach. As a practice, he didn't need to give out this briefing but since it is their opening week, he made an exception. Participants of a WOD should come in the class at least 15 minutes before the class. They should warm themselves up with a foam roller or using the cardio equipment in the waiting area. We started the warm up together for this session. We ran and did a number of body weight exercises and stretches to warm us up and familiarize ourselves with the moves of the WOD.

CFMNL Rules

WOD differs everyday. It works different muscles. A regular WOD class is not for beginners. In fact, you are required to attend a number of foundation classes so you'll be familiar with the moves and routines that will be accomplished in the WOD sessions.

For this trial WOD, we were to do a many rounds as possible (AMRAP) of the following exercises in 10 minutes:
7 wall squats
7 pushups (lift the arms each rep to ensure doing a full pushup)
7 box jumps
7 burpees

I did my best to complete an acceptable number of rounds and I got 5 rounds and I almost completed my 6th round with 4 box jumps. My heart was pumping hard and I wanted to rest in the process but I fought off the instinct and kept going. With Cross fit, you define how hard you work and you are in competition with yourself and others. That is your motivation!

My Score wasn't that bad

We finished the session with a series of stretches and I headed to my home gym to do yoga.

Review

The Makati branch of Cross Fit Manila is your typical box. An almost empty gym with equipment you'll need in WODs. They have kettle bells, medicine balls, box, suspension rings and a lot more equipment for the typical workout that involves plyo metrics, gymnastics, strength and conditioning. The coach are helpful too. The competitive atmosphere is a really great motivation. They handle small classes so the coaches will be able to assist you in their full capabilities. The rules sets boundaries for the community. The con of this gym and this discipline is that it costs a lot. A drop in session costs around P750. A monthly rate can cost from P3,500 to 6,000.

This is where the WODs are done

If you have the budget, try this out for a month and see results with constant demand for cardio and strengthening movements that should be done in a short time consistently, you'll definitely get the body you wanted.
