Afghanistan will host India for a three-match Twenty20 international series in New Delhi next month, the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced Wednesday, marking the first bilateral series between the two countries to be hosted by the ACB.
The matches will be played on Sept. 13, 15 and 17 at Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi, according to the board.
The series is part of Afghanistan’s Future Tours Program and will be staged in India, which has regularly served as a home venue for Afghanistan in recent years.
“This series holds great significance for Afghanistan cricket,” Mirwais Ashraf, chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board, said in a statement. He described hosting India for a bilateral series as “a significant milestone.”
Afghanistan has staged home matches in both India and the United Arab Emirates because of limited facilities for international cricket at home.
The A.C.B. said Afghanistan most recently played India in a three-match ODI series in June. The teams also met in a three-match T20I series in January 2024.
Mithun Manhas, president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, said the organization would continue supporting opportunities for Afghanistan to play high-level international cricket.
“The BCCI remains committed to supporting the growth of cricket in Afghanistan and providing its players with opportunities to compete at the highest level,” Manhas said.
India also hosted Afghanistan’s first Test match, in 2018, a landmark in Afghanistan’s emergence in international cricket.
All three matches in the upcoming series will be played at the same stadium in Delhi.
