Journey to the Center of the Earth? [Jul. 7th, 2008|02:44 pm]
basilbasilmint
I have a guest pass for me and a friend to the 7pm showing of Journey to the Center of the Earth tonight at White Marsh. It is in 3-D.  Cheesy goodness or possibly cheesy badness can be had for free. But as much as I'm down w/ seeing some fascinating movie at The Charles on my own I'm pretty sure that I need a buddy to enjoy this one. Anyone like 3-D movies and wanna come?

Joan Jett 8:30 PM Saturn Stage

Saturday July 19, 2008

K-Swift with DJ Class & Rye-Rye 7:00PM DJ Culture Stage
DIPLO 8:30PM - 10:00PM DJ Culture Stage

Anyone want to join me? What bands are you gonna see?

Into Every Generation.... [Jun. 13th, 2008|01:47 pm]
basilbasilmint
Once again, I'd like to share my love of All Songs Considered. The podcast I just listened to about music that defines generations really showcased the qualities I love about this show. It has the extreme music nerdiness factor, a gentle sense of humor, and real conversation, where people actually disagree, but manage to do so respectfully. You could say that it's just a music show, and that it's easy to stay calm about aesthetics, particularly among peers who have so much in common. But as someone who facilitates (a very mellow) book discussion group, my hat is off once again to Bob Boilen for being such an interesting and positive radio host.

This episode about generations brings up an interesting question for me: what generation am I in? I always thought that I, born in '78, am too young to be considered Generation X. My babysitters, yes. Winona Ryder in Reality Bites, certainly. My friends who know all the words to Rio (a song I only heard as an adult on VH1's "I Love the Eighties") yes as well. They may be only a couple years older than me but they have a whole realm of TV and music references I missed.

And Generation Y is defined as being a few years younger than me, born in the early eighties. Shouldn't the generation definitions overlap? Why is there a hole between 1977 and 1980? Are we not men?

as if my ipod dying wasn't enough [May. 24th, 2008|09:28 am]
basilbasilmint
Some fucker smashed my car windows out and left the rock that did it on the dashboard as a smug little "ha-ha, I was in your car." Nothing was stolen but they pulled the stuff out of my dash and arranged it- more showing off/intimidation. Geico says I have a $250 deductible even though it was vandalism.

My neighbors are really nice and came out with a broom and trashcan and cleaned up as best they could. Work said I don't have to come in but I guess I will as soon as I get the rest of the glass up. And maybe find a new insurance company...

today my beloved ipod, the great charlie, experienced a complete loss of memory.
r.i.p. charlie and all the good music on you.
one minute you were perfectly normal, with over 6000 songs. and the next you were just an empty shell with nothing inside.
i can't get the music back and i can't add it again.
so that's it.
i'm not sure whether it was my cheap alarm clock ipod base or my computer that did this to you. I suspect the computer, since i had you in my hand, acting fully normal until i plugged you in to the mac. i knew i didn't wanna spend the afternoon on the computer and was about to make a banana smoothie when i thought i'd just quickly add a few podcasts.

i wish i'd just let you be because then you'd still be the insanely full ipod i knew and loved.

Birthday plans [Mar. 13th, 2008|10:51 pm]
basilbasilmint
So I'm turning 30 on Friday, April 25th and I have questions about what to do.  First question is a WHEN question.

Which is better - party on Friday or party the next night?

Second question: Night or Daytime party? Third: Indoors or outdoors? I wanna go somewhere special. not restaurant special more like lodge special. Or Observatory...or conservatory... or a promontory? Sheesh I don't know. A picnic? A night picnic? A daytime indoor picnic known as brunch at my house which is what I most often do? I want all my friends there, and food, and something fun to do. But not fun like bowling or fun like skating because I am bad at such things. The zoo? Aquarium? Lithuanian Hall? isn't there some treehuse somewhere around here?ok, i found it  http://www.thetreehousecamp.com/ but i think that's a bit much to ask of people time and travel-wise.

What to do? What to do?
