In case you've not heard anything about it, I thought it important to bring to attention that there's a website called Ebooks Tree that's been identified as scraping download links from AO3 (and probably other sites too looking at the lists). Some information on the issue (in the form of an update as I can't find an original statement): Update from A03's tumblr
How to find out if you're affected
- Go here: Ebooks Tree (It's a Do not Link url that I've used so they don't get page hits) - It may well show as unsafe, but I think that relates to people reporting the site for it's underhanded ways.
- Select the first letter of the name you (or your friends) write under in the 'Author' row
- Then it'll prompt you to select the "first two letters" to narrow the list down.
- The list is NOT alphabetical after the first 2 letters, so...
>>ETA: Thanks to
lanalucy for pointing out in the comments that there is a search box in the top right of the page. (For some reason that doesn’t show when I visit on my netbook, but it does on my tablet. I use chrome on botn so I suspect either my antivirus or adblocker hid it or something)
In case it doesn't show for you...
>> Tip: You can do a 'find' on each page (I put in the start of my name til it pinged red, then on the next page added the next letter, then the next, then took one out and put it back in lol on the next pages - coz I'm lazy and didn't want to type it fresh each time. Note - it doesn't automatically 'find' on a new page you go to, so even though it will still show red/zero result, it hasn't checked the page so it might not be clear)
- If you find your name, click on that, it will show you which of your fics are listed.
- I don't know if some authors may have multiple entries in the list, so might be worth going through the whole thing even if you find your name once.
I'm lucky in that I've never hosted on AO3, I did check anyway because it's obvious from the list that other sites are involved. I was also lucky in that there are relatively few AZ's (only 3 pages of them), but for some there are 40+ pages, try to stick with it.
If you do find your fics on the list, refer back to the AO3 tumblr post on how to tell them to take your stuff down.
I know at least one user is on there and I'm gonna PM them separately.
Finally: If you're going to be away from a computer and only on mobile for a few days and would like some help going through the list, please post below with the author name(s) you use on AO3. If I can get to it, I will, but I can't make any promises as life has been quite life-like lately.
Good luck, peoples.
Nate
(PS sorry I've been MIA so far this year, I'm gonna try and fix that).
