Listens: "Bridge to Nowhere" - Sam Roberts

What Do You Hear in These Sounds?

I was bored all day today, and also feeling a little mopey, so I decided to drown my sorrows in music, both by listening to it and researching my tastes with the help of last.fm and its applications.

The first site I went to was xochy.org, which breaks down the nationality statistics of the bands and artists you listen to, and the pie graph below represents my listening habits.

Being an English speaking American, this is unsurprising for the most part, though I'm a bit surprised that I listen to quite that much American music, and that I don't listen to more German music. Outside the Anglosphere, I really like the music of Central Europe, which is probably due to my burgeoning taste in industrial, progressive, and electro[nic] music. I don't actually know if there's more of those types of music coming out of Central Europe, but it's where I find most of the good stuff.

The numbers below are the total plays from each known country with over a hundred plays. I currently have a little over 56,000 plays on last.fm.

29678   United States
8850     United Kingdom
4540     Canada
1886     Australia
1817     Germany

277       Spain
209       Finland
172       Iceland
135       Denmark

However, this site tells me that my musical mecca is Bermuda, which it says I have a 17% compatibility with. That does not necessarily mean I need to listen to Bermudian music because the people there probably listen to lots of music from other countries, but I'll have to listen to some more Heather Nova just to see if I've missed something.

Next was last.fm milestones, which is pretty self-explanatory.

Nothing really surprising here. My top artist, Sarah Fimm, still has under a thousand plays on my profile, so I wouldn't expect anyone to pop up too often on something like this.

This site looks at your top 50 albums and then tells you "how old" your music is by album release year. My top albums were released in 1979 (Singles Going Steady by Buzzcocks), 1990, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, and 2000 through 2008, with the most releases being in 2002, 2004, and 2006. 2002 has the most with eight releases, which are albums by Sarah Fimm, Eminem, Vienna Teng, Stevie Wonder, Lacuna Coil, Frou Frou, Tegan and Sara, and Mirah.

The chart below is from diozaka.org and shows my decade by decade listening habits. I'm surprised I listen to so much 80s music. Must be all the synthpop.

The same site has a tag cloud, which shows the genres of music I mostly listen to:

Heat Haze calculates Unique Tracks Listened (UTL) and Song Repetition Index (SRI) based on last.fm profiles, and are an indicator of how active your music listening habits are. A high UTL and a low SRI are an indicator of active listening habits, and mine were 17,301 and 3.282. The numbers increase along with tracks scrobbled, so they're only really helpful with people who have a similar number of tracks scrobbled. A friend who has roughly the same number of tracks scrobbled as I do has a UTL of 11,128 and an SRI of 4.773.

On the same site, I found an application that generates a table of the most played artists per month.

I find this very interesting since it doesn't really trend with my top artists list. Sarah Fimm is number one as she is on my top artists page, but Tegan and Sara have 160 more plays than K's Choice, which they're tied for on here, and Regina Spektor and Vienna Teng are my fifth and sixth most played artists behind Tool at four, but they only show up once on the table when Regina shows up three times and Vienna does twice.

The Underground-o-meter takes your top artists and calculates how "underground" you are based on their number of listeners. My overall top artists are 24% mainstream (and 0% underground), but my overall top tracks are only 13% mainstream. What does this mean? I don't know, but it's kind of neat.

Then there is the age calculator, which calculates the age of your neighbors, who are the other last.fm members that have similar musical tastes. My average age is 25 (and 24:19 Female to Male), which is close to my own age, so I guess I fit in with my demographic.

And, finally, there is the million track calculator, which says at an average of 59 racks a day, I will reach 1,000,000 tracks on June 4, 2053. I will be 71 years old.
