| Australia's LEGO convention, Brickvention! |
[07 Jan 2009|10:16am] |
Australia's LEGO convention, Brickvention, is just a few weeks away and it is now time to make that all important decision about attending the event.
The weekend of LEGO-filled fun happens over the Australia Day Long Weekend (January 23rd - 25th) in Melbourne (Australia). This is the third such event in Melbourne and looks like being just as exciting as the previous years.
Details of the event can be found at the website: http://www.brickventures.com
Even if you can't make it to the whole weekend, the display area is open to the public on Sunday and we'd love to see everyone there!

| Call for Submissions |
[10 Sep 2005|12:16pm] |
This may seem like a crazy request, but I am currently organizing EDAR37, a conference on the built enivornment, to be held in Atlanta GA May 3-7, 2006. Typically this conference involves papers, workshops, poster sessions, and intensives on a wide array of topics pertaining to the built environment. I'd like to liven it up a bit, and what better way than with legos! If you would be interested in submitting your work ( please see further details below...Collapse )
Please feel free to pass this message onto others who would be interested, faculty and students alike. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at edra37[at] gmail.com
Thank you, Meldrena Chapin, EDRA37 Conference Co-Chair PhD Program in Architecture, University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee Currently Dissertating in Atlanta GA

| new flash from the lego news room |
[15 May 2004|03:25pm] |
*setting* Lego News Room:
Reporter at desk: Phil Johnson Reporter in field: Melissa Cole
*cheesy news music intro*
Phil: Good evening, this is Phil Johnson with THE NEWS This just in Ladies and Gentlemen, a homicide has taken place at the Malfoy residence in Surrey this evening and we have a report coming to you live from our reporter in the field. Melissa are you there?
Melissa: Hi, yes Phil I am here, and what a ghastly site it is Phil. You can tell behind me Phil, this community is shocked and just stunned as they stand around staring at the lifeless body of Mr. Malfoy. It was reported to me earlier by Wizard Police Chief Wiggum that the person responsible for the murder was none other then Dobby the house elf.
Phil: Melissa are you serious, the house elf who helped the Boy Who Lived?
Melissa: Yes Phil one and the same. Apparently according to Wizard Police Chief Wiggum, celebrity went to his head. Then of course you know, like most child actors or small statured actors such as Gary Colemen, they just fall by the side and are forgotten.
Phil: Yes Melissa that is always sad, one has to wonder if perhaps this was Dobby's last ditch effort at some fame for himself.
Melissa: One can only assume Phil. Right now though, we have Chuck in the helicopter giving us an ariel shot. Ladies and Gentlemen we apologize for the quality of the image you are about to see.

Melissa: As you can see Phil, his head is gone and torrents of blood are just oozing out onto the grass now, as you can see the many many spectators gathered here, are in shock as this senseless murder has shocked our small magical community.

I wrote up a Web page on Asgard and uploaded it as a subpage of our Modelers Page (remember to click on the logo to get to the Modelers Page). I also uploaded Jeff's email about the Mars display, and left room for a third page about the Chittenden Locks display that Keith organized. Maybe someone else can write up those displays, and I'll upload it.

| Question of walls + please post! |
[08 Apr 2003|03:43pm] |
I am confused about how high to make the walls of the club I built and if they should be on all four sides. What is the best proportions so as to provide the best viewing? Also for everything in the Mars colony do we have to build in an oxygen system or can I just claim that the system is beneath the floor? I did build a generator though that goes through the wall.
Also- people, please, please post times that you can come build. I have been getting a number of requests for keys and it would be much easier to meet everyone at once and give them out. We also need to be posting about people's ideas for building since there does not seem to be much progress other than Katy and Lino. I'm not trying to get down on anyone but I just want to make sure we continue the energy and pace that I felt after we moved into the studio. Sarah

| Sunday anyone? |
[03 Apr 2003|02:57pm] |
Ok, so no one showed up last night, guess it was late notice. I did get some more of my club built but it was pretty boring with only me and the cats. Does anyone want to build/get keys on Sunday?
Lino-your sketches rock! I must attempt to sketch, unfo rtunately my drawing abilities are minimal.
Also, has anyone had problems with livejournal? I get a message often that the "socket is not connected". What does this mean? Saraho

Just wanted to report on our progress as a group. About 6 or 7 of us built at the studio yesterday. Some of us built boxes which we added to the collection already built by the Sunday people. Also Lino and Katy started their fabulous greenhouse, it's aw esome! Inspired by Andrew's idea of a disco on Mars I started building a club. I finished the DJ booth and started the floor and oxygen bar(it is Mars after all). It was a cool group and I felt like we're really coming together as Brickworld. I think most of our group last night agreed that it worked out that I posted and said I was going to be there Tues and whoever wanted to come did. So I suggest that whenever you feel like building and want company, just post a few days ahead and see who comes. W e'll prob. have to have an organizational meeting in the future but for now the space is too small to have everyone building at once. I'd love to hear what ideas people have for current projects so please post! Sarah?

| Can people build Tues (18th)? |
[17 Mar 2003|12:15pm] |
I know it's late notice but I was wondering how many people would want to work at the studio tomorrow and possibly get their keys. I was thinking about 6 or 6:30 to about 8:30 or 9. People could come later but I can't hang out for much longer than that. Peter had mentioned building some of the Mars/castle sets as a jump-start for those of us who haven't built in a while, which sounds like a good plan to me. People are free to build whatever though, of course. I'm leaving for a family trip on Sat and so I have a busy week preparing. If this doesn't work for many people than we'll try another day. Also you can always email me at sarahlevine01@yahoo.com for key inquires. Having a key is not essential, if you have a friend with one or prefer to build only at future meetings than you may not want one. However I have plenty so there shouldn't be a problem in most of the core group having one. Sarah n

| All systems go! |
[15 Mar 2003|07:05pm] |
We got a lot done today, including some building. We moved all the Lego into my basement and organized it, we set up tables and chairs to work at, we signed pledges and most of us took keys. We're ready to go!
A total of 13 of us showed up: Andrew, Ario, Jeff H., Jeff L., Keith, Mark, Matt, Ned, Peter, Phil, Ryan, Sarah, and Steve, plus Ben, a friend of Matt's from New York. People came and went all day, but we had a continuous Brick World thing going. And Lino, Katy, Justin, and Shari would have liked to be able to come, so it sounds like our group will be about 20 - a very good number.
For those of you who couldn't make it, Sarah slevine@fantagraphics.com has keys for you. You will need to give her a signed pledge, a photocopy of your drivers license, and to read the rules. I've attached the pledge, the rules, and an old glossary for my terminology.
I'm out of town until June, most likely, but I don't think you'll miss me. Jeff L. talked to Pac Sci, and they seem to be on board, and Mark will get together with Nordic soon, too. It looks like a Martian colony and a model of Asgaard will be our first two projects. We need to nail down the dimensions, and then discuss the actual models: what belongs where.
I look forward to seeing what you've built when I get back.

| Meeting |
[12 Mar 2003|10:44pm] |
The Wednesday night meeting at my house broke up half an hour ago, and I thought I'd report it for those who weren't here.
Seven of us showed up. I would have liked more of a turnout, but several people emailed me that they couldn't make it but were still interested. If we end up with a dedicated core group of 10-20, I'll be happy. Please email me if you are still interested but didn't make the meeting.
The two smaller items we discussed were what had happened with Odyssey and the Modelers Pledge. All seven of us signed the pledge and photocopied our drivers licenses for use as photo IDs. Katy King noticed that the pledge doesn't make clear what the relationship is between Brick World and the modelers, so I'll do that here. Brick World is NOT a membership organization, so we're not members and can't hold office - in fact, our relationship to the corporation is arm's-length. However, we can organize ourselves any way we want.
The two big issues were studio space and what next steps to take. I covered the studio question in another entry, and hope the others comment, as well. We then discussed what direction to head off on, and the consensus of those present was to start on two separate projects at the same time: a Viking or Asgaard display for Nordic Heritage and the Mars colony for Pac Sci. Jeff L. is meeting with Pac Sci tomorrow morning, so we should have a good idea about that very soon.
We all agreed to meet again (those who can) this coming Saturday, 15 march at my house between 11am and 4pm. The Lego cabinets will be there, and we should be ready to start at least planning the displays, if not building them. We can also give out the keys and go over some of the procedures. I hope you can stop by.

| Studio |

The Brick World Studio --------------------------------
I spent all day yesterday looking at potential studio space for Brick World, and by the end of the day I was firmly convinced that my basement is our best choice. Now I hope to convince you.
I looked at two types of space. The first was rental space, including artists' lofts or workspaces or vacant storefronts. For example, I looked at the Market Street lofts in Ballard and the Northwest work lofts in north Belltown (although I didn't look at any particular space). Both are nice but somewhat cold, and they're not cheap.
The second was empty retail space in malls who might trade us temporary use (until they filled it) in exchange for the promotional value we might bring. I talked to Northgate, Pacific Place, Westlake Center, and Rainier Center. I think they'd all be good places for a display, but not really for a studio.
The third alternative is to negotiate a deal like we had with Odyssey with another museum. But not only might we have the same problems - they wouldn't trust us to be there unsupervised and they wouldn't want us working on other projects - but the actual space isn't that nice.
I think using my basement is the best choice of all. Here's why: - It's free - I know the landlord, and he isn't going to screw us - in fact, he's a big supporter - Nobody else would be using the space - We would have our own separate entrance - We won't have to move again anytime soon - The space itself is nicer than retail or museum space, for example it's carpeted and lit with halogen lighting, not fluorescent - It's already equipped with shelves and tables (I need to buy new chairs) - There is a nice private bathroom right there - Parking is better than near Odyssey or downtown - Access is not an issue: I will give you all keys to the garden gate and basement door, and you can work all night (as long as you don't make too much noise) - The space is big enough for ten people working on four displays, I think - We wouldn't have to put everything away when we leave, as we would have at Odyssey - We can play music, drink alcohol, and smoke just outside under a roof
Here are the downsides: - Nobody walking by is going to see us - Moving displays out to the street isn't all that easy - We would have to change our own light bulbs and take out our own trash - There are two cats, and some of us are allergic
The modelers got to see the space at tonight's meeting, and the reaction was pretty positive (I asked them to make their own comments). But two other issues were raised: using my basement makes us very dependent on me, and it doesn't have the same tone of legitimacy as using Odyssey did. Both are good points, and the consensus was that this is fine for now, but we'd like to find something else down the road.
