ronnieee: Getting along with other dogs

My chichi Gimpy is almost 6 months old and since he was old enough to see I've been socilizing him. I take him to stores, petco, other pet stores, and every week we go to puppy kindergarden with other puppies. While he's gotten very good with people he's horrible with other dogs. Barking non stop and nipping at them when they get too close. Idk what else to do.

How can I get him to be nice to other dogs? Someone suggested forcing him to let another dog sniff his butt but I haven't tried that in fear he'll turn around and bite. He lives with other dogs and he's fine with them but stange dogs he Goes crazy. Any suggestions?

jamie28: intro

i have always been a giant breed person. not large, GIANT. great danes, mastiffs, newfs, and currently an irish wolfhound.

we were asked to babysit a chi for "about a month". it's looking more and more like the owner has dumped him on us. we will *probably* keep him, though we are still discussing it. he is not as yippy as most chi's that i have met, though he is still too yippy for my taste. any way to get him to cut out the ridiculous barking the minute someone (including family) comes in the door? he snaps at the wolfhound quite a bit, but fortunately the wolfhound just looks at him like "are you for real"? and goes on about his business. (one thing that i have always preferred about the giants is that they are mostly more laid back, as pointed out by the situation i have here). he has not snapped at any of us, the cats, or the rabbits, so i think he is just intimidated by the size of the wolfhound.

all the reasons i am not thrilled have now been mentioned. i didn't expect to fall in love with the little shit. i didn't even expect to LIKE the little shit. but all in all he is a good dog that just has some of what i consider "breed flaws" which are tolerable. he follows me everywhere, is learning how to sit (he is completely untrained *head-desk*)and walk on a leash. he will dance on his back legs for a treat. he sleeps in the bed or on the couch with me and burrows under the covers. his tiny body feels good against the back of my knees, which is his preferred place.

his name is chico, which i find ridiculous but probably won't change as he is 5 or 6 years old and used to it.

here is a video of him trying to get the rabbits to play:

zgypsy: Hi

We just adopted a 5 year old chi...  She was used for breeding until she
got a terrible infection and they had to have her spayed.  Then they
put her up for adoption.   The first folks who took her brought her back..
I don't know why as she is perfect.  She is very independent but
getting used to us and our household.   Hopefullly she will one day
learn to love us as much as we love her.

When she came to us she had never been on a leash so we are learning.
Today she walked quite happily all the way to the corner with me.  I love
the way she kept looking at me to make sure she was doing  everything
right.   She is doing beautifully and will come to us for chicken so we
are making progress.   Also, she accepts a pat in her bed from time
to time.   She is a great little dog and although she has only been her
for a couple of months we can't imagine our life without her.

MJ and Benji girl    (she came with the Benji name and we didn't want to change it).

Hey, my name is Melissa and I am the owner of two Chis. A 13 month old girl named Lux who is cream and white, and 17 month old Blue, tan, and white named Griffin. My girl was a gift from my mother and I rescued my newest, Griffin, from a breeder who was just using him for breeding. She already was "retiring" him. She started breeding him when he was a year old. He is now neutered and has a great, loving home where is a pet,  not a sperm bank. I will pot pictures soon.

plumtongues: Cut the barking;

Has anyone here used one of those collars that shock the dog when it barks? Wow...that sentence sounds so damn harsh, but I don't know how else to describe them, haha.

I bought one a while back for small dogs but I was too scared to use it on my chihuahua, Lola. I bought her when she was two.

She barks when someone walks into the room, when someone gets up from the furniture too fast, when ANYTHING outside makes ANY kind of adjustment, you get the picture. If no one has used the collar, is there another way to remedy this that you have experienced first hand? She's a handful sometimes, haha!
