Hello everyone,
I just wanted to put out the word that Gripwire is looking to hire a few talented programmers (graduated or graduating very soon) to work on some forthcoming mobile (iOS, Android, WP7) projects.
Objective-C experience is preferred but not required. Java and C# never hurt, either. Just show me you're an awesome coder and that I want you on my team.
Have an impressive junior or senior game project, or super cool CS4xx demo that you think will make you stand out? Make sure you send it along with your resume to justin@gripwire.com
Just graduated and were planning on heading (back) to the east coast? We might be able to accomodate you. Send your resume!

Hey Everyone!
My name is Tyler Perry. I graduated Digipen somewhere around last year. I am currently working with a Digipen artist, Stephen Scott. We've submitted our game to the Summer Indie Uprising popular vote. So we need your help to get our game out there! Please go to: www.facebook.com/XBLIG.IGSU and vote for Progenitor Prologue. We are the top right entry.
Thanks! |

I'm still pretty amused that my previous gripe post is still there and that it's the last thing posted. I feel DigiPen deserves a post about the positives of the school, rather than just the negatives. After all, DigiPen did help ignite career, to the chagrin, I'm sure, of all the live journal users on here who thought I was some punk kid who wouldn't make it in the real world.
But to the topic at hand, there is something about DigiPen that just has this sort of amazing success rate with their graduates. Whether it's because the people who make it out just have this insurmountable determination, or because the program actually does something to make you awesome, there is something to say about these fascinating individuals.
The thing in my mind that really helped me, and a lot of the graduates that I know, is the incredible environment at the school. No, I'm not talking about the wonderful rain and 7-11 that was next door when I was in the program. What I am saying is there is this glow among the students that emits hard work and determination. Most students see this glow and like an insect, they are drawn to it and gain their own determination, emitting their own glow, and so on and so forth. And what's great is that a lot of classes are structured in such a way to foster this environment, with team based projects and teachers encouraging students to work together to solve problems.
If there is one thing that you might want to take away from DigiPen, it's the attitude and the desire to work together. That goes for any program at DigiPen. That is what makes the game industry strong. That is what makes the game industry a pleasure to be in.
So, I guess in order to start a discussion here, to my fellow graduates who have had fortune smile upon them, what did you take away from DigiPen as one of the major things that has helped you get to where you are today?
After writing this post, I realized it kind of seems a little like marketing, but I'm really just in a good mood and I wanted to write a nice a post. |

In an attempt to create some buzz on this board, incite debate, and see who still actually checks these boards, I am here to talk about an awful situation:
The DigiPen Art Program.
Does anybody know what the hiring rate for the art program is right now? Does anybody know what the sticking rate is for those artists that were hired (How many were hired that didn't get laid off months later)? How long does it take for artists to get jobs in the game industry after they graduated?
Granted, the last couple of years have not been good for anybody, programmers and artists alike. Thankfully things are starting to turn around.
Now, I can't possibly have concrete numbers, as I don't know every single artist that graduated from DigiPen, but anecdotal evidence suggests outlook is bleak.
What is wrong with the program? Why are these artists who poured their everything into this quite unforgiving program over four years getting overlooked? Or worse, their jobs get outsourced to Asian countries that will do the work for a very small percentage of the cost.
Well, I can't say I know for certain, but looking at portfolios, it makes me think that this buck shot of a program has issues. These artists do so many different things, they don't do enough of one thing to have their portfolio show that off.
This is a very obvious argument about specialization vs being a generalist. I won't disagree that there needs to be fundamentals. Every vocation has necessary fundamentals. The issue is a generalist's art can be purchased by the penny, while a fully developed specialist has skills that are rare. Now it's been argued to us that DigiPen teaches fundamentals to a point that an artist graduates with a rare foundation. I disagree whole heartedly. There are way too many programs that teach strong fundamentals. And furthermore, no company has the money to blow on someone just because they have fundamentals. They need someone who can get a very specific job done. They will hire a character artist, or they will outsource character art, because they need characters.
In the end, I don't actually know if this any of this is actually debatable. I know there is some leadership at DigiPen that will disagree with me. Unfortunately, I don't think they visit these boards.
A final note, for those of you who have graduated and currently don't hold a job in the game industry, do not despair. You are probably talented to have survived the program. You have to buckle down, pick a specialization and work hard to produce a portfolio for that. It'll take some time, but if you push yourself like you did at DigiPen, you will have a good chance of showing up these fools from all these other art programs. |

Hey all,
I was wondering if any of you old Project FUN instructors happen to have a copy of the level 1 manual you'd be willing to part with. I can't seem to find the ones I thought I'd saved. :(
Email me at timwoodbury (at) gmail (dot) com if you can help me out. Thanks in advance. |

Amazon is offering a free 1 year subscription to Amazon Prime (Which usually costs $79 a year. Perks include free 2 day shipping, and $3.99 overnight shipping): http://amzn.to/bSH8jP (url shortened with bit.ly)
This is being marketed towards college students but all you need is a valid .edu email address, so teachers and alumni might be able to benefit from this too (though the Terms of Service does say they have the right to ask for proof that you are a current student).
I apologize if you have already heard about this amazing deal. I just want to help spread the word on this before they stop offering it. I am not an employee of Amazon, nor do I gain anything from people signing up for this service. |

I'm moving away forever, and want to get rid of my monitor. It's a 19" CRT (yes, yes, it's hilarious), so it's really nothing spectacular. But it makes a wonderful backup monitor if you're the sort who accidentally destroys things from time to time!
It works as well as the day I picked it up from a posting in this LJ group, but I don't care to ship it across the country. You'll need to pick it up from The Lakes, two blocks away from the Main Campus. If you don't have a car, it's light enough to carry about a block or two before giving up and calling a friend for help. |

Hello.
I'm trying to get a townhouse that will be available at Shadowbrook in May, but I need two roomates to move in with me. I need to find roomates ASAP to secure the townhouse before it's taken.
Shadowbook is the closest apartment complex to the new campus, so it is in a great location for future and current students. I will be graduating in May, but will be staying in Redmond to work.
The rent will be about $1500 per month, which will divide up to $500 per person per month.
Please email me at michaelltd@mac.com if you are looking for a place to stay.

I have an old computer I'm looking to get rid of. It's free for whoever wants it. I just need you to come get it at my place in redmond near DP. It's just the box, nothing else. It's good for screwing around with or if you want a linux box for whatever. 500 Mhz AMD Athlon 256 Megs RAM 10GB HDD DVD-ROM drive ATI All-In-Wonder something card 10/100 LAN card 56k modem card 500W PS i think. Integrated sound No OS, no peripherials, no Monitor Comes with power cable if you want it. Note: The DVD-ROM Drive is a little flaky and the gfx card needs to be wiggled sometimes. Other than that, it's functional. email: toddseiler at toddseiler dot com -Todd

| House for rent |

Hey all,
So I am currently living in a house w/ 5 other house mates. A good number of us are graduating this year and the remaining folks might not want to stick around. Anyone out there interested in grabbing some friends and renting a house? :) Some of you folks might even be familiar w/ this house since we've thrown a few DigiParties here before.
- Monthly cost: $2200 (which means about $367 per dude if you manage to get 6 dudes, not counting bills/utilities) - Located across and over from Grasslawn Park (about twenty minute walk to main campus, 6-10 minute drive to the new campus) - One master bedroom, three other bedrooms, two bathrooms, two large 'living rooms' (one upstairs and downstairs...the downstairs one currently houses two dudes), all that good stuff - two-car garage - Spacious backyard - Worlds' nicest landlords
Let me know if you are interested :)
Thanks all, paustriaATdigipendotedu |

Hello public,
A few DigiPen friends and I decided to make an educational facebook game for a competition and for learning purposes. The game we made is called "Timeline", and it is an educational U.S. History game where the player tries to locate important historical events on a timeline. Points are based on accuracy and you can see and compete against your friends' scores.
I'm not 100% sure how the games will be judged in the competition but I think that judges will be considering a) how fun the game is b) learning potential of the game c) number of players + comments/reviews here
If you have any spare time, could you please play our game here. If you think that our game is entertaining and has some learning value, please leave a review at the link in the end of the paragraph, above?
Also, two other DigiPen students made a really fun trigonometry game called "Spider Trig". They did a really good job! You can check out their game here
Please support the work of your fellow DigiPen students--Play and review both games :) Thanks for your time! |

| Quick question for DigiPen attendees and graduates. |
|
|

Hi.
I've been told that I can transfer/test out of a few classes becuase of my prior schooling (Comp Sci BS).
I will probably transfer out of the math and liberal arts classes, but I am unsure on if I should test out of some of the computer science classes (like AI, Data Structures, C++, etc.).
So, what are those classes like at DigiPen? Do they just go over the theory of standard CS stuff or do they go into how to implement these ideas in a game (or does all of that happen in other more game specific classes?
I'd appreciate any information you could provide.
Thanks!
-Jeff
