"Yikes! Do you think... all the villains will show up?" - Anna in "Once Upon A Studio" asking her sister if all the villains will show up to the 100 year photo
Queen Anna is the protagonist of the movie Frozen and deuteragonist of Frozen II. She is a member of the quintet group of princesses called The Freckled Five.
Background
Appearance
Anna is a adult woman with a slender figure and a fair complexion. She has greenish-teal eyes, rosy cheeks, thin lips, long, strawberry-blonde hair tied into two pigtail braids, bangs on the right side of her forehead and freckles (a trait that she shares with her sister Elsa, even though Elsa appears to have less freckles than Anna does). When she wears sleeveless dresses, it is shown that she has some freckles on her shoulders as well as on her face. Her face is slightly rounder than Elsa's, but still just as pretty. She also had a platinum blonde streak that matches Elsa's hair color on the right side of her hair, due to an accident in which she was struck by Elsa's magic when she and Elsa were little kids, which disappeared towards the end of the film.
All of her outfits have Rosemaling due to the fact that the movie's setting is in Norway.
Her winter dress is traditional Norwegian clothing called "Bunad", and the dress consists of a long-sleeved light blue blouse, a pair of turquoise mittens with navy blue palms, a black bodice with gold trim and green, red, yellow, and purple rose prints on it, a detachable magenta cape with purple linings, and small Byzantium tassels on the edge of the cape with a silver brooch consisting of a pair of hearts with gray prints attached to her cape, a medium-length, dark blue skirt consisting of a lavender round-cut lining with points, with each rose and periwinkle print similar to a rose around the skirt on each point, and each periwinkle bush-like print on each of its round edges. She also wears a magenta bonnet with purple lining, lavender fluff, and matching white print on the back, black heeled leather boots with gold linings and magenta soles, and magenta lipstick with this dress. On occasion, she wears a pair of crystal clear ice skates.
In her coronation dress, she wears a black sweetheart bodice with off-the-shoulder dark green sleeves and rose, teal, blue and purple prints on it, and has greenish-gold lacing, a black satin-laced necklace with a bronze pendant of Arendelle's symbol, an olive drab skirt with sashes (consisting of asparagus centers with pink, crimson, dark olive green, olive drab, and blueprints on it between cream sides), both cream petticoat and bloomers, white tights, a pair of black ballet flats, her hair is in a bun, and a part of her hair is braided and used as a headband, a green comb-shaped barrette with a couple satin ribbons (green and green-yellow) attached to the back of her hair, and dark pink lipstick. She also wears a teal cape with a cyan bow as a clasp for the cape, sapphire oval-cut hem with azure line, blue dots on each cut, and small sapphire dots all around the cape.
When she is accidentally cursed by Elsa, her hair turns white, almost silvery-looking. After she is thawed, her hair returns to its original state with the platinum blonde streak no more, thanks to Elsa.
In her casual wear form, her hair is once again in braided pigtails without her streak, and she sports a timber wolf wrist-length blouse with light blue vertical linings, a pinafore dress consisting of both a light gray bodice with green linings, vertical gray hairlines, and a couple four green buttons vertically on each of her chest with black hairline laces attached, a dark gray skirt with a light gray lining, crimson, green and lavender flower prints all around on it, and lavender, green and olive drab bush-like prints between each flower prints. She also dons a white petticoat, a pair of matching heeled leather boots with gold linings and brown soles, the same color and shape amount of brooch, and, on occasion, the same color amount of ice skates.
Personality
Unlike her older sister Elsa, Anna is very eccentric, optimistic, energetic, awkward, and far from elegant. She usually acts before she speaks and can be rather impulsive, but holds a lot of innocence to her, nonetheless. She is free-spirited, bent on spending her life outside the castle gates after years of being enclosed within them for the safety of the kingdom due to Elsa's ice powers. Anna is also a pure and hopeless romantic, dreaming of romance the moment the gates are finally opened for Elsa's coronation ceremony. There can also be a little naivety to her, as she believes in marrying someone immediately if the heart tells you so, despite knowing them for merely a day. And though naÃŊve occasionally, Anna is far from weak and is shown to be quite skilled in self-defense, as seen when she and Kristoff survived being attacked by the wolves as well as when she punched Hans off the ship after the climatic scene in the fjords.
Even though she greatly values romance, it is clear that Anna's most valued treasure is her relationship with her sister. Since childhood, Anna has been attached to Elsa and always leaped at the opportunity to spend time with her. As the years passed and the sisters grew apart, the heartbroken Anna continued to try time and time again for some quality time with the one she loved most, but due to Elsa's powerful magic, it was deemed too dangerous until, through Anna's loving efforts, Elsa learned to control her icy powers, allowing her to end their "imprisonment" within the castle walls and finally share the quality time they have been longing for years upon years.
Throughout most of the film, Anna was also the only character to have faith that Elsa was no monster. The Duke of Weselton was notably against her because of that very theory and Kristoff feared her, as did the other citizens for that they were oblivious to who Elsa truly was. Even so, despite their separation, Anna knew that her sister was far from vile and put it in her hands to bring her home, not only for the sake of the kingdom, but in hopes of rekindling their formerly-close bond. This is an example of Anna's purely optimistic side and powerful sense of hope, as well as her love for her sister. Another example of this can be seen rather powerfully during her moments with Hans in the library, when Hans announces his plans to kill Elsa, with Anna responding with little to no real strength due to her frozen heart unintentionally caused by her sister, "You're no match for Elsa", giving one of the biggest examples of her optimism, loyalty and true love for her sister, despite all the pain that she had been through because of the relationship alone.
As mentioned above, one of Anna's most striking traits is her eccentric and whimsical personality. She is notably goofy and highly-active, constantly shown running throughout the castle, bouncing and flipping over furniture and speaking to the paintings on the walls, though the last habit is due to having no one to communicate with in the castle with Elsa forcibly being locked away in her room. Also, because of her impulsive attitude, she has the tendency to get herself into quite a lot of trouble, such as the moment she provoked Marshmallow, a creature twice her size, without thinking of the consequences.
Anna may also be seen as tricky or aggressive, as seen when she provoked Marshmallow. When Marshmallow threw Olaf, Anna was angered by this and tried to throw a snowball in revenge, but Kristoff, knowing it was a bad idea, kept Anna from throwing the snowball, telling her to let the giant snow monster be. Anna told him she was calm and seemingly softened, but the moment Kristoff turned his back, she threw the snowball at the giant snow monster anyway.
Despite her optimism, Anna has also struggled with some self-confidence, as she often looked down upon herself and viewed herself as nothing more than ordinary throughout most of the film, especially compared to the radiance of her sister. It was to the point where she felt she had no one in the world who truly loved her, with Elsa seeming to want nothing to do with her. This would also explain why she was so quick to romance, as her song "For the First Time in Forever" would explain that she's looking for someone to act as her companion, no longer wanting to live a life alone. She also quotes lines such as "It's just me" and "No, I'm completely ordinary", which also indicates her low outlook on herself. In a deleted song called "More Than Just The Spare", Anna sings about her self-worth, which is low in the beginning of the song, but gradually gets bigger.
In the end, despite her numerous flaws, Anna is an extremely sweet, selfless and loving character. Numerous times throughout the film, she puts the safety and well-being of others before her own, showing great loyalty and admiration for her friends and family, which is most notably seen with Elsa. Some examples of this can be seen when she purchased the items and food that Kristoff couldn't afford at Wandering Oaken's Trading Post and Sauna, prevented Kristoff from spoiling Olaf's dreams of living in the summer and most significantly and importantly during the climax where she saves Elsa from death at the hands of Hans, despite knowing that she would inevitably lose her life in the process. In terms of personality, all these factors and more make Anna one of the most diverse Disney characters of all time.
Disney History
Frozen
Young Anna
At a young age, at Anna's behest, she and Elsa would spend much of their time using the latter's powers for their own enjoyment, against their parents' wishes. One night, five-year-old Anna suggests they build a snowman, to which eight-year-old Elsa agrees. The sisters head into the castle's ballroom and create a winter field of snow. During their playdate, Elsa accidentally strikes Anna in the head with her magic, rendering her unconscious and turning a streak of her hair platinum blonde. Horrified, Elsa calls their parents, King Agnarr and Queen Iduna, for help. Iduna and Agnarr travel with their daughters to the Valley of the Living Rock, where they request the assistance of magical trolls led by a shaman named Pabbie. Pabbie is able to save Anna by cleansing her body of all magic, including memories of magic. Though this leaves Anna with no recollection of Elsa's powers, Agnarr declares that it's for the best.
Anna attempting to get Elsa to leave her room
Pabbie advises that the royal family take precautions with Elsa's powers as they can be extremely dangerous if not controlled. For the safety of his daughters and people, Agnarr forces Elsa into isolation by closing off the castle and separating her from Anna, who remains oblivious as to why life in the castle has changed. Over the years, Anna makes repeated attempts to reach out to Elsa, but to no avail. To keep herself occupied in spite of her loneliness, Anna would spend most of her time running through the castle halls and talking to paintings. During Anna and Elsa's teenage years, Agnarr and Iduna lose their lives at sea when their ship gets engulfed by monstrous waves. The news devastates Anna, who attends her parents' funeral alone. With no family left besides her sister, Anna made another attempt to reconnect with Elsa to no response. With Elsa refusing to leave her room due to the instability of her powers, both sisters were forced to cope with the loss of their parents, alone.
Three years later, Elsa had finally come of age and is ready to be crowned Queen of Arendelle. To celebrate the occasion, the windows, doors, and gates of the castle were opened for the first time in years. Foreign dignitaries are also invited to the festivities, with such kingdoms as the Southern Isles and Weselton sending representatives in honor of their countries. An excited 18-year-old Anna sees this as an opportunity to explore the outside world and find the companionship she has been devoid of for years, preferably, in the form of "true love." The second the gates are finally opened, Anna rushes out and explores her kingdom, roaming about the streets and catching glimpse of all the visitors. Suddenly, she bumps into a horse owned by the dashing Prince Hans of the Southern Isles. Though initially angered by the clumsiness of the stranger, Anna quickly becomes smitten with Hans's charm and good looks. After introducing themselves, Anna and Hans become acquainted, and apparently hit it off, only to be interrupted by the coronation bells.
Coronation party
At the chapel, Anna stands by her sister's side during the crowning (where she shares a cute wave with Hans). Afterwards, a ball is held in honor of the new queen. Anna and Elsa stand side by side in the ballroom, watching over the crowd. To Anna's surprise and delight, Elsa initiates a conversation, allowing the sisters to bond for the first time in years. They are interrupted by their steward Kai, who introduces the snide Duke of Weselton. When the Duke offers Elsa her first dance as queen, Elsa mischievously volunteers Anna instead. Anna is dragged onto the dance floor, where she is subjected to the Duke's over-the-top dance skills, much to Elsa's amusement. Afterwards, Anna and Elsa laugh about the matter, with Anna openly wishing their lives could always be carefree. With regret, Elsa declares that it can't, but refuses to explain why. Feeling rejected, Anna excuses herself from the party.
Discovering Elsa's magic
As she walks off, Anna bumps into Hans once again, who takes the princess out on a romantic date around the city. Anna falls in love with Hans, and the night ends with a proposal from Hans. Anna immediately agrees, and the newly engaged couple return to the ballroom to ask for Elsa's blessing. But Elsa, who was cautious of Hans, outright refuses, telling Anna that she can't marry someone she met and indirectly says that she doesn't know anything about true love. This remark causes Anna to hiss back and tells Elsa that shutting people out is the only thing she's good at. This leads to a heated argument between the sisters, which climaxes with Anna questioning why Elsa coldly shuts out her family and the world. Anna's prying triggers Elsa's anxieties, causing the queen to inadvertently unleash her powers upon Anna and their guests. Horrified by what she's done and the way everyone reacted, Elsa flees the ballroom. Despite her confusion, Anna follows behind in an attempt to stop her sister. Elsa escapes into the fjords and unknowingly places a curse that traps Arendelle in an eternal winter. As snow flurries fill the sky, the Duke of Weselton goes into a panic, exclaiming that Elsa must be apprehended. Claiming responsibility for Elsa's departure and the curse, Anna makes it her mission to find Elsa and save the kingdom. With Hans in charge in her absence, Anna leaves the castle on horseback, searching for her sister.
Meeting Kristoff
Hours later, Anna loses her horse in the middle of the woods and accidentally ruins her clothes by falling into freezing water. Fortunately, she stumbles upon a humble establishment owned by the equally humble Oaken, who happens to have one winter outfit in stock. Just as she's about to purchase her new outfit, a rugged mountain man named Kristoff arrives and tells Oaken that the source of the harsh weather is the North Mountain. Anna deduces that Elsa is somewhere along the North Mountain, but before she can get more information, Kristoff is booted from the shop for insulting Oaken. Anna pays for Kristoff's unpaid gear to coerce the mountain man into guiding her to the North Mountain. Though reluctant at first, Kristoff eventually agrees. Anna loads up with Kristoff and his reindeer sidekick, Sven, and the trio embarks on their quest to find Elsa that same night.
Meeting Olaf
Along the way, Kristoff inquires about Elsa's reasoning for covering the land in eternal winter, and Anna explains the situation with Hans. The cynical Kristoff calls Anna out, as he too finds it ridiculous that she became engaged to someone she met that same day. Before their conversation continues, however, the trio is attacked by savage wolves. Fortunately, they're able to escape the pack, but the only bit of cargo to make it out of the chaos are Sven's carrots. Kristoff's sled and most of everything in it are destroyed. Feeling guilty, Anna offers him a new sled and gear and allows him to return home if he so chooses. Knowing Anna would die on her own, Kristoff and Sven choose to stick by her side, much to Anna's relief. By the time morning hits, Kristoff starts to doubt Elsa's morality, but Anna remains confident that Elsa will end the winter. Upon entering a grove, they encounter an enchanted snowman created by Elsa. Anna is initially terrified but simmers down upon realizing that he's harmless. The snowman introduces himself as Olaf, the same snowman that Anna and Elsa built as kids. He explains that Elsa brought him to life and that he knows her whereabouts: an ice palace.
Anna in agony after her heart is accidentally frozen by Elsa
Upon arriving at the palace, Anna is stunned by the sheer beauty of Elsa's powers. Wanting alone time with her sister, Anna advises Kristoff and Olaf to wait outside before anxiously entering the palace. Inside, Anna apologizes for the coronation incident and asks Elsa to return home. Believing her people are safer without her, Elsa refuses and encourages Anna to return to Arendelle, where she can enjoy the sun and open gates. To that, Anna reveals that Arendelle is trapped in an eternal winter caused by Elsa's magic. Despite Anna's confidence that they can solve the problem together, Elsa goes into another panic attack and loses control of her powers. She accidentally strikes Anna once again, but this time, in the heart. After falling to the ground in pain, Kristoff arrives and helps her get to her feet. With neither sister realizing the danger, Anna continues with her persistence, but Elsa remains firm on her decision and orders Anna to leave for her own safety. When Anna refuses, Elsa creates a hulking snowman to remove Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf from the palace.
The snow monster (named Marshmallow by Olaf) chases the friends out and away from the palace, warning them not to come back. After reaching safety, Anna's hair begins to turn white, and Kristoff deduces the cause to be Elsa's magic. Kristoff leads the gang to the Valley of the Living Rock, to seek aid from the trolls. Kristoff's adoptive mother, Bulda, assumes Anna to be her son's girlfriend; when the two deny any romance, Bulda and the trolls try to convince them otherwise, going as far as to set up a troll wedding. But before the ceremony was completed, Anna nearly faints and loses balance and falls into Kristoff's arms and shivering from the effects of her curse.
Anna weakens
At this, Pabbie revealed himself, stating that there was "strange magic" present. Looking into Anna's eyes, Pabbie gravely informed the princess that, unless removed, the ice in her heart would cause her to freeze into solid ice, forever. Worried, but still hopeful, Kristoff asked Pabbie if he could remove it. However, Pabbie sadly stated that if it was her head that would be easy, and informs them "only an act of true love" could thaw a frozen heart. After Bulda suggested a "true love's kiss", Anna shivered and collapsed again, and more of her hair began to turn white. Realizing the urgency of the situation, Kristoff stated that they had to get to Hans. Carrying Anna, Kristoff swiftly mounted his reindeer and told Olaf to climb on as Sven began galloping off to Arendelle.
Return to Arendelle
By morning, Sven approached the outskirts of Arendelle. While Sven charged through the snowy landscape, Anna continued to shiver and weaken in Kristoff's arms; trying his best to delay the curse, Kristoff gave Anna his hat and urged Sven to go faster. As they neared the castle, Kristoff realized Olaf would be a strange sight and told him to keep out of view. Finally arriving at the castle gates, Kristoff prepared to bring Anna inside. Despite her condition, Anna was still concerned about Kristoff, wondering if he would be okay; at this, Kristoff insisted that she not worry about his affairs. The gates opened, and Kai, Gerda, and a handmaid rushed out to assist Anna. Before they brought the princess inside, Kristoff told them to get her warm and to find Hans immediately. Just before the gates closed, Kristoff implored Kai to ensure Anna's safety.
Kai and Gerda escorted Anna inside the library, where Hans was gathered with the Duke of Weselton and dignitaries; upon seeing the princess, Hans immediately rushed over to help her. As Anna fell into his arms, Hans remarked at how cold she was, to which she desperately replied that he had to kiss her. Deciding to give the couple some privacy, Kai, Gerda, the Duke, and the dignitaries decided to leave the premises.
Alone with Hans, Anna explained that she had been struck by Elsa's magic, elaborating that the magic had froze her heart and could only be remedied by an act of true love. Understanding this to mean "a true love's kiss", Hans took Anna's chin and, smiling tenderly, prepared to kiss her. However, he came to a sudden stop and grinned malevolently, saying, "Oh, Anna. If only there was someone out there who loved you."
Pleased with the turn of events, Hans proceeded to shut the curtains and extinguish the candles while explaining his motivations to a perplexed Anna. He revealed that as thirteenth in line, he was never going to inherit anything from his own kingdom and that he needed to marry into the throne elsewhere. Hans noted that as the heir, Elsa would have been the preferable bride, but since no one ever made progress with her, and Anna was so willing to marry him, he formulated a plan to marry Anna and then kill Elsa. At this point, Hans poured water into the fireplace, putting out the flames and causing the library's temperature to drop. As Hans was putting out the flames, Anna fell off the couch weakly, and told him to stop but it did not work. Hans continued to explain that with her flight, Elsa "doomed herself". He then gloatingly informed Anna that he would kill Elsa to restore summer, assuming the throne as Arendelle's savior. With horror, Anna realized Hans had never loved her and was intent on leaving her to die to further his own agenda.
After Hans betrays Anna and locks her away, the curse weakens her
Though weakened from the curse and the cold atmosphere of the library, Anna resolutely told Hans that he would prove no match for her sister. But Hans merely mocked Anna, stating that it was she who was no match for Elsa; utterly confident in his plans for usurpation, Hans turned to exit the library, leaving Anna to perish inside. Anna stumbled to the locked door and struggled with the door handle but to no avail. As she collapsed, Anna hoarsely begged for help, and her hair turned completely white.
The nature of love
Weakened by the curse
After Hans left, a blizzard began overtaking the castle, plunging temperatures even lower, and Anna noticed the library ceiling was being coated in ice. The handle of the library door suddenly jiggled, but all Anna could muster was a barely audible whisper for help. Following some more jiggling, the door finally swung open and Olaf waddled in, his happiness fading into concern upon seeing Anna lying on the floor. Acting fast, Olaf quickly started the fire anew; horrified, Anna warned Olaf to get away, but fixated on keeping the princess warm, Olaf disregarded the warning and brought her close to the fireplace.
Feeling that Anna was safe for the moment, Olaf asked about Hans and his kiss. Anna sadly replied that she was wrong about Hans and that what they had was not true love. At this, Olaf was disheartened, and Anna implored him once more to get away from the fire, lest he melt. However, Olaf was adamant about staying until they found a way to save her. Utterly defeated, Anna admitted that she did not even know what love was. Still optimistic, Olaf encouraged Anna, reassuring her that he knew: "Love is ... putting someone else's needs before yours."
Anna's hands ice over
Upon Olaf's usage of Kristoff to demonstrate his point, Anna slowly realized that the ice harvester loved her. Suddenly, the winds from the storm caused a window to burst open; as he went to shut it, Olaf gleefully noticed that Kristoff was rushing back to Arendelle. Filled with new determination, Anna asked Olaf to help her up, hoping to reunite with the ice harvester. As the snowman helped Anna to her feet, the blizzard's strength began to intensify, and ice spikes started to form in the castle, threatening to trap the pair within. The duo managed to escape from a window. With Olaf's help, Anna makes it into the fjord, but the curse only worsens the farther she goes. Olaf is blown away by the wind and Anna's hands turn to ice.
Anna nearly frozen
In the whiteout, Anna was blinded and had to resort to calling out desperately for Kristoff. Her hands began to frost over to an icy blue, and though Anna determinedly stumbled onward, she realized that time was running out. Anna was unaware of it, but her voice managed to reach the ice harvester, who struggled to locate its source. Suddenly, the storm came to a halt, and Anna's path to Kristoff became clear.
Anna (nearly frozen) is now barely able to move and is covered in icy snowflakes and is shivering. However in the distance she spots Kristoff running to her. As Anna slowly makes her way towards Kristoff, she hears a sword being drawn a short distance away. In horror, she realizes that Hans is preparing to kill Elsa. After one last look at Kristoff, Anna sacrifices herself by lunging between Elsa and Hans and blocking the latter's blow just as her body freezes solid, killing her. The shockwave caused by her curse knocks Hans off his feet.
Anna frozen
Upon seeing her sister's lifeless frozen body, Elsa breaks down in tears. Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven arrive shortly afterward and mourn the loss of the princess, as Arendelle's onlooking populace does the same. Fortunately, Anna's sacrifice for Elsa has constituted an act of true love, thus breaking her curse and thawing her frozen heart.
Anna thawed
Anna and Elsa embrace and profess their love for each other. With help from Olaf, Elsa comes to realize that love is the key to controlling her powers. As Anna watches in amazement, Elsa frees Arendelle from its eternal winter, effectively restoring peace to the kingdom. Hans, meanwhile, regains consciousness and is shocked to find Anna alive. Anna calmly confronts him before fiercely punching him in the face and knocking him into the fjord. Anna and Elsa share another hug, and as the sisters embrace, Anna looks lovingly at Kristoff, showing that she reciprocates his romantic affections.
With summer returned at last, Anna and Elsa reunite at long last
Following these events, Elsa reclaims her position as queen. Under her command, Hans and the Duke of Weselton are deported, while Kristoff is dubbed the "Official Arendelle Ice Master and Deliverer". Anna also buys Kristoff a new sled and presents it to him as a surprise (with help from Sven). Kristoff is delighted to the point of wanting to kiss Anna, though he quickly regrets admitting as much. Anna nevertheless accepts, and the two cement their relationship by sharing their first kiss. At the castle courtyard, Elsa permanently reopens the castle gates and invites her subjects to enjoy a newly-created ice skating rink. Anna joins in the festivities and is touched by Elsa's vow to never close the gates again. Joined by Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven, the sisters indulge in a kingdom-wide celebration honoring their reunion and a new era for Arendelle.
Olaf's Frozen Adventure
For their first Christmas together in twelve years, Anna and Elsa prepared a surprise party for the kingdom. Anna went into the dining hall and admired the setup; she tried to take some kransekake from the feast, only for Olaf to burst from it. Anna told him that he couldn't reveal the surprise just yet. Anna expressed excitement at Arendelle's first Christmas in forever, and went out into the courtyard with Elsa and Olaf to greet the citizens.
Ringing the Yule Bell
After the Yule bell had been presented by Kristoff and Sven, she rang it with Elsa and Olaf. After Elsa declared the holidays to have begun, Anna told Olaf he could now share the surprise. However, everyone started to leave the courtyard, leading Anna to enquire as to why everyone was leaving so soon. All the people she spoke to replied that they had to go and prepare their family traditions. This left Anna and Elsa feeling slightly uncertain, but Kristoff assured the sisters that they didn't need a big party, and explained his tradition to them through a ballad. Anna was receptive to the tradition, but hesitant at Kristoff's offer of his traditional stew.
Anna, Elsa and Olaf then returned to the dining hall. When Olaf asked what their family tradition was, Anna asked Elsa if she could remember any from their childhood. When Elsa only remembered ringing the Yule bell, Anna pointed out that was for the kingdom; Elsa apologised, saying that it was her fault they did not have a tradition. She left the hall, closing the door behind her. Anna tried to follow her but instead let out a sigh, and walked away.
Anna was in an attic space above her bedroom where Elsa found her looking for traditions; in her search, she found possessions from her childhood in her old trunk. The sisters then looked in Elsa's chest, which was mainly filled with gloves. Anna also found a beloved childhood toy, before Elsa set eyes on a box, and the possible solution to their woe. She showed Anna the contents of the box, at which she gasped.
Despite all the time spent apart, Olaf was the reminder of the connection Anna and Elsa shared
Anna was on hand to interpret Sven's message that Olaf was lost in the forest; she, Elsa and Kristoff then gathered a search party, and travelled into the forest to find him. After some searching, Anna and Elsa found him covered in snow by a tree. He explained that he went looking for traditions for them, but ultimately failed. Anna and Elsa then explained to him that he was their tradition; during their years apart, Anna had made gifts for Elsa, the theme always being Olaf. He was what kept them connected during their years apart, and was what reminded them that they still loved each other.
Anna, and the party, made their way back towards Arendelle. On the way, they stopped on a frozen lake. Elsa created a table from ice where food was laid down. She also took Anna with her towards the centre of the lake, where she generated a large Christmas tree. Anna removed a figurine of Olaf from the box of gifts, which Elsa froze inside a star, and had Olaf place on top of the tree. Anna and her family then stood in admiration at the spectacle.
Frozen Fever
On the day of her nineteenth birthday, Anna was roused by Elsa, who had worked hard to create the perfect birthday experience. After putting on a new dress, Anna noticed that Elsa was sneezing and worried that she was sick. Elsa, however, dismissed Anna's concerns and proceeded to spruce up both of their dresses and told her sister to follow a red string that would lead to presents scattered throughout the castle and Arendelle. After riding a bike through the castle's halls and down a spiral staircase, Anna and Elsa clambered out of a window to head into the village. As she picked up more presents, Anna grew increasingly concerned about Elsa's state.
In the village square, Anna encountered a group of children, who sang a song for her, and Oaken, who offered Elsa a cold remedy. Though her sister refused the offer, Anna sensed that the medicine would be needed and took it. Anna's fears were confirmed when she had to intervene to save Elsa from falling off the clock tower. Informing her sister that the rest of the celebration would have to be postponed, Anna got Elsa to admit that she had a cold.
Taking care of Elsa
As the sisters walked back to the castle, Elsa apologized for ruining what was meant to be a perfect birthday, to which Anna assured Elsa that nothing had been ruined and told her to rest in bed. When the gates opened, Anna beheld her surprise party and was impressed with how Kristoff, Sven, Olaf, a few of Arendelle's citizens, and a large group of miniature snowmen called Snowgies worked together to present the cake. After Elsa went to blow the birthday bukkehorn, Anna turned her focus back to her sister and helped her to bed. With Elsa in bed, Anna gave her some warm soup and told her that the chance to take care of her was the best birthday present she could ever ask for.
Frozen II
Celebrating autumn
Three years later, in the autumn, Anna was still enjoying the time she had with her family and her kingdom. Anna went up the hill from the town to a pumpkin patch where Olaf was basking in the sun. Olaf became philosophical, noting the imperamence of things. Anna reassured him by explaining how much she enjoyed her time, and while somethings changed, others did not. Later that day she and Olaf joined Kristoff in the town square; the citizens gathered in celebration of the harvest, where Elsa also joined them. That evening Anna and her family retired to the castle.
Comforting Elsa
In the library Anna enthusiastically took part in a game of charades. After Elsa became distracted and went to her room, saying she was tired, Anna became concerned. Following Elsa to her bedroom, Anna found her looking out over the fjord, wrapped in their mother's scarf. Anna comforted Elsa and sang their mother's lullaby to help her fall asleep.
During the night, Anna awoke to find the air filled with frozen crystals, all throughout Arendelle. When the crystals fell from the sky, Anna, with the rest of the castle staff, proceeded to the courtyard, where they observed the fountains run dry. After the wind picked up into a violent gale, Anna and the rest of the citizens evacuated to the cliffs above Arendelle. Once everyone was safe, Anna was able to ask Elsa why she had not told her of the voice the latter was hearing. Elsa then revealed to Anna that she had awoke the spirits of the Enchanted Forest. Grand Pabbie and the trolls then arrived, and Pabbie explained that the elements were angry, and if the source of their rage was not fixed, he foresaw no future for Arendelle.
Talking with Pabbie
Although Elsa wished to follow the voice alone, Anna insisted on going with her. Kristoff offered to drive, with Sven and Olaf coming as well, entrusting the welfare of Arendelle's citizens to Pabbie and his trolls until they return. Along the way, Olaf shared fun facts, such as âwater has memory.â Kristoff and Anna had an awkward conversation, where Kristoff attempted to tell Anna how much she meant to him, and Anna took what he said as insults. After being interrupted by Elsa, the group realized they had reached the Enchanted Forest which was covered in a heavy mist. Anna and Elsa made it through the mist, holding hands tightly, as Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven followed them, but were pushed into the forest, with no way out.
In the forest, the group was confronted by the Northuldra people and the Arendellian soldiers, who had been trapped there since the mist had appeared. The Northuldra told the sisters that the scarf belonged to one of their oldest families, with Elsa then realising that the girl saving their father was in fact their mother.
With Mattias
The group joined the Northuldra and the Arendellian soldiers for some respite at the Norhtuldra's camp. Anna spoke with Lieutenant Mattias, about his life in Arendelle. He shared with Anna the advice given to him by his father. When asking further about the advice, and what to do when life does throw on to a new path, Mattias told Anna that one should never give up. Anna finished the thought by suggesting that one should do "the next right thing", with Mattias agreeing. After a close encoutner with the Earth Giants, Elsa agreed with Anna that they should continue their journey. Anna was unable to find Kristoff or Sven, and decided to go on with her sister and Olaf without them.
On the way Elsa continued to call to the siren. The Wind Spirit reappeared, this time leading them to a shipwreck. Elsa forced Anna and Olaf away after discovering the shipwreck of their parents' royal ship and what they were searching for, along with their final moments before their deaths.
Bumpy boat ride
Anna tried to steer the ice boat from the icy path, but instead brought it onto a fast flowing river. Extremely vexed, Olaf also explained to Anna that he felt angry. He reassured him by saying how she was still there to hold his hand. She suddenly shushed Olaf after noticing that they were surrounded by Earth Giants. To further avoid the giants she steered the canoe into a dark cavern. The pair plummeted down a waterfall, and after recovering from the fall advanced deeper into the cave system.
While venturing through the Lost Caverns an ice sculpture of Runeard and the old Northuldra leader presented itself to Anna. It depicted Runeard about to strike him down, with the leader's back being turned. Anna realized that the dam had to be destroyed to calm the spirits and lift the curse on the Enchanted Forest. After Olaf had spotted a way out, with renewed determination Anna started towards this exit; however, Olaf began to disintegrate. With the magic in Olaf fading, Anna realised that something terrible must have happened to Elsa.
Mourning the loss of Elsa and Olaf
Anna stayed in the caverns, huddled up against a rock clutching her satchel for some time. Anna felt completely lost, unable to stand because of the grief that weighed so heavily upon her. With small steps Anna began to rise from the cavern's floor and slowly make her way towards the exit. She had to scale a wall and leap across a chasm, but eventually up, to clamber out of the cavern and stand in the new light of dawn. Despite things now being so different, Anna vouched to continue, and do the next right thing. It was then that she set eyes on the dam, and with renewed determination ran down a hill back towards the river; once there, she screamed at an Earth Giant to wake up. Once roused, the giant stumbled onto one of his fellows; in total three woke up and began to pursue her through the forest. Eventually Kristoff and Sven found her, saving her from one of the giants' blows. Relieved to see him, Anna asked Kristoff to take her to the dam. Once there, she found Lieutenant Mattias and his soldiers. After explaining about King Runeard's treachary, and Elsa giving her life for the information, Mattias and his men attracted the attention of the Giants with their swords ans shields to help Anna. Running out onto the dam, Anna encouraged the Giants to throw their boulders at the dam. In doing so, the dam breached, with Anna barely managing to get to safety. She was saved from falling by Mattias and Kristoff. Once breached, the ensuing tidal wave was unleashed down the fjord straight towards Arendelle. However, Anna's actions revived Elsa who was able to divert the flood and save the kingdom.
Becoming queen
Elsa returned, reviving Olaf and telling Anna that Elsa is the fifth spirit but they are both the bridge between humans and nature. Kristoff ran to meet them, proposing to Anna, who accepted. Following this, Elsa remained to look after the Enchanted Forest, while Anna was crowned Queen of Arendelle some time after. Anna was later assisted by Lieutenant Mattias, now promoted to the rank of general, in dedicating a new statue to the unity between Arendelle and the Northuldra. Anna was pleased when Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven dressed up in formal attire for the occasion. After unveiling the statue, Anna has Gale carry a letter to Elsa.
Other History
Once Upon a Time
Anna appears in the fourth season of Once Upon a Time alongside Elsa and Kristoff. She will be in 9 episodes and is portrayed by Elizabeth Lail.
Two years after the events of the movie, Anna is engaged to Kristoff. In honor of the momentous occasion, Elsa grants Anna both a beautiful new necklace and a gown originally owned by their deceased mother. As Anna tries on the dress, Elsa discovers their mother's diary. Within the text, it is revealed the king and queen left Arendelle because of Elsa. While Elsa believes it's because they feared her and saw her as a monster, Anna believes otherwise. To prove the true reason, Anna takes Elsa to Grand Pabbie. Pabbie is unable to uncover the exact reason the king and queen left, but reveals where they were heading; a land known as Mist Haven. While Elsa still worries, Anna reassures positivity and suggest they travel to Mist Haven to find out the truth for themselves. Reluctant about the idea, Elsa denies, claiming she doesn't want to abandon her kingdom and fears Hans and his brothers will strike should they leave Arendelle. Unable to convince her sister to tag along and grant permission, Anna secretly boards a ship and travels to Mist Haven, herself, in hopes of finding the truth to their parents' mysterious journey.
After arriving in the Enchanted Forest (Mist Haven), Anna seeks out a young shepherd by the name of David, an old friend of Kristoff's and the soon-to-be Prince Charming, as a means for nightly shelter. After agreeing, however, David is confronted by his sorceress of a landlord, Bo Peep, who's requesting her monthly payment. With money scarce, David and his mother, Ruth, have no choice but to deny, resulting in a proposition. Bo Peep gives the family one day to hand over the payment, or they must pay with their farm, as well as their lives. However, a spirited Anna decides to take David under her wings to teach him in the art of self-defense via sword fighting. Though the training is apparently futile, David's courage comes to pass upon learning Bo Peep branded Anna as her own, as further punishment for the lack of payment. Furious, David fights off Bo Peep and her men, stealing her magic staff and rushing to Anna's rescue. It's revealed she's alive and well, fortunately, and a proud princess congratulates her new friend on his success. Before she departs, Anna asks Ruth if she knows of other inhabitants of the Enchanted Forest with magical abilities, hoping they could assist her on her journey. Ruth sends Anna to the infamously powerful sorcerer, Rumplestiltskin, but heads a word of caution as she does. Nevertheless, Anna's journey continues, and her search for the Dark One begins.
At some times afterwards, Anna had arrived at Rumplestiltskin's castle and asks the Dark One why her parents went to the Enchanted Forest on their ill-fated voyage that has to do with Elsa's magical power. After Anna tells him she'll do "whatever it takes" to help her sister, Rumplestiltskin agrees to tell her, under one condition: she must go to the home of an old man, an apprentice of a sorcerer, and pour a bottled substance into his tea. To sweeten the deal, Anna must sign the contract and only then, once the job is done, he will tell her about her parents. Arriving at the cottage, the apprentice invited her in for some tea and biscuits. Thinking the substance is poison and unable to hurt the kind old stranger, Anna instead pours the substance into the fire. After Anna reports to Rumplestiltskin that she did what she's ask to do, he reveals that the substance Anna was supposed to give to the apprentice is actually an antidote to keep the man alive after he was poisoned a day earlier. Shocked, Anna tell him the truth and begged for more antidote to save the man. But Rumplestiltskin shows her through his crystal ball that the man was already transforming into a mouse. After she arrives back at the cottage to find the mouse, Rumplestiltskin reveals that the apprentice is actually a first line of defense of guarding a special item hidden in his cottage. He reveals the item's second line of defense is that it's protected by an enchantment spell, by which it can't be opened by people who had faced their inner darkness.
Telling Anna that she broke the contract, her punishment would be locked up in his castle forever, while Elsa will be heartbroken since Anna left because of her and become a monster, and her wedding with Kristoff will be off. Refusing his words and her fate as his prisoner, Anna placed a sword to Rumplestiltskin's heart and demands him to rip the contract; only to have the Dark One urges her to kill him with it. Unable to bring herself to commit such horrible bloodshed, due to her pure kindness and being overwhelmed by the thought of actually killing the Dark One, Anna collapses in tears. One of her tears landed on Rumplestiltskin's dagger, which allows him to open the box. Anna chides Rumplestiltskin for using love as a weapon, to which he replies that love is a weapon, it's just that he knows how to wield it more than others.
After Rumplestiltskin emerges from the vault with the box, Anna tells him to tell her why her parents traveled to the Enchanted Forest. He tells her that the King and Queen of Arendelle had come to him looking for a way to take away Elsa's powers forever. Though Anna is convinced that her parents loved Elsa, Rumplestiltskin claimed they actually feared her. He tells her that they did not find what they were looking for, but that the box he retrieved from the vault does contain something that does: the sorcerer's hat, which has the ability to take away a person's powers. After Rumplestiltskin plans to use the hat to make himself unstoppable when it has enough power, Anna tells him that the apprentice could stop him, though Rumplestiltskin states he is not there.
However, Anna corrected him when a mouse jumps on to his hand and bites him, making him drop the dagger. Anna picks up the dagger and realizes that she can control him with it. She uses the dagger to command Rumplestiltskin to do three thingsâreturn her and the box to Arendelle, never harm her or Elsa, and revert the apprentice back into his human form. He agrees and sends Anna back home in a puff of smoke. Finally home, Anna reunites with Kristoff where they embrace and share a kiss. She informed Kristoff that her parents did go to the Enchanted Forest out of fear of Elsa, and they seek to use a box that contains the sorcerer's magical hat to rid Elsa of her powers. When Kristoff asked how is she going to break this to Elsa, Anna says she has no idea what to tell her sister.
When she reunites with Elsa, Anna instead lied about her discovery, claiming their parents didn't find what they seek when they traveled to the Enchanted Forest. To her surprise, she discovered that Elsa has managed to control her magical powers. Even more surprising is when Elsa introduced her to Ingrid the Snow Queen, their aunt, who also has the same power. Despite Elsa's claim that Ingrid was a relative of theirs, Anna was suspicious since their aunt isn't in any of the family's portrait or records. After sharing this revelation with Kristoff, Anna decides to visit Grand Pabbie again to find out their family's secret involving Ingrid. When Kristoff discusses Anna's decision to withhold the truth from Elsa, concerning what her parents did in the Enchanted Forest, Anna decides to keep hiding the truth from her sister until the time is right to tell her, which he supports. After Anna departs to find more answers, she and Kristoff are unaware that Ingrid has been eavesdropping on their conversation the whole time.
Anna stops by Oaken's shop to get some supplies for her trek, where she would then meet Belle, who is also visiting the rock trolls in hopes of recovering her memory following the recent lose of her mother. Together, they managed to reach the rock trolls' valley, and after Pabbie helps Belle, he tells Anna what he knows. He reveals that Ingrid is her mother's eldest sister, and it turns out they have another sister, a middle sister named Helga. When Ingrid and Helga mysteriously vanished in the garden one day, they were erased from all records. Now suspicious of her aunt's secrecy, Anna and Belle hurry down the mountain to warn Elsa. On the way down, however, a deadly storm conjured up by Ingrid halted their descent. Suddenly, a fierce wind strikes, knocking Anna off the cliff, where she clings to an edge, and making Belle drop the stone that contains her memory. Belle was busy trying to save the memory stone, while Anna calls to her for help, which she finally prompts to do after the stone falls and shatters at the bottom of the cliff. Before Belle can reach and save her, Anna's grip finally loosens and she hit the ground, and is rendered unconscious. Belle can only helplessly watch as Ingrid steals the box containing the magical hat, and whisks Anna away in a puff of smoke.
Anna awakes to find herself in the castle's dungeon cell, and face to face with Ingrid, who accuses her of wanting to use the sorcerer's hat to drain Elsa of her power. Anna denies the notion, arguing that she wasn't intending to use it on anyone until Ingrid attacked her. Ingrid then admits that she wants a family, and think that her nieces could be hers. But since she now considers Anna to be the "odd one out," due to having nothing in common with her and Elsa, and not fitting the perfect criteria as the third family member, Ingrid vows to find the perfect replacement and have what she desires: a family that loves her for who she is.
As Elsa was preparing a feast for her sister, Ingrid, now with the intent on driving them apart, appears and tells her of Anna's trip to the Enchanted Forest. Ingrid manipulates her into thinking that Anna was planning to use the sorcerer's hat to absorb all of her magic powers. Learning that she is locked up in the dungeon cell, Elsa pays Anna a visit. Elsa upsettingly accuses Anna of wanting to use the hat to strip away her magic; but it wasn't until the guards leaves that Elsa reveal it was all a ruse. She tells Anna that she doesn't believe their aunt's lies. They now had plans to find the urn and trap Ingrid in it. The sisters search through Ingrid's old room, while Kristoff is put on lookout duty. As she opened the wardrobe, Anna was frightened and startled by the sight of Hans' frozen body, until Elsa explained what had happened while she was away in the Enchanted Forest, but they managed to find the urn next to him.
As part of the plan, Anna was returned to the dungeon cell, where she'll ambush Ingrid when she comes to check up on her. Unfortunately, Ingrid was on to their scheme, and Anna now found herself in chains and trapped in the cell with her. Ingrid then uses a shard of mirror to place Anna under her spell, the Spell of Shattered Sight, resulting in Anna releasing her inner anger and resentment towards her sister. As she enters the dining room, Anna finds Elsa preparing a feast for her, comprised entirely of chocolate. Instead of being pleased, Anna angrily confronts her sister for abandoning her during their childhood. While under the spell's influence, Anna throws the necklace that Elsa gifted her into a fire. As Elsa is bewildered at her sister's anger, Ingrid appears and admits she did it to show Anna's inner darkness, causing Elsa to realize her aunt has placed her sister under her spell.
Ingrid demands that Elsa freeze Anna to prevent her from trapping Elsa inside the urn; however, Elsa refuses to hurt her sister, and holds her arms against her sides. In an unexpected twist, Anna, still under the spell's influence, unseal the urn and traps Elsa inside. As she is slowly absorbed into the urn, Elsa tells her that no matter what she does, she will always love her. Recovering from the magic spell, Anna was horrified by what her aunt made her do to Elsa. As Ingrid prepares to choke her, Kristoff arrives to save Anna, armed with only his ice pick. With her aunt finally consumed by her anger and overwhelm with disgust at how the couple sees her as a monster, Anna can only stand and watch as Ingrid uses her power to freeze both her, Kristoff, and Arendelle out of pure fury.
