Boethius

Boethius

Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius was a late Roman scholar, politician, neo-Platonic philosopher and theologian. His activity was in the time of the rule of the Ostrogoth king Theodoric, under which he held high offices. He became suspicious of a conspiracy against adherents of the Ostrogothic conquest of followers of the Emperor of the East. Therefore, he was arrested, condemned and executed as a high treason. Boethius tried to realize an ambitious educational program. He intended to make all the works of Plato and Aristotle, as basic texts of Greek philosophical and scientific literature, accessible and commentable in Latin translation. He also wrote textbooks. In this way, he wanted to secure the core stock of the delivered educational goods for the future, as Greek knowledge in the Latin-speaking West of Europe had diminished sharply. Moreover, he pretended to point out the agreement between Plato and Aristotle, which he accepted according to the then prevalent view.
