α-linolenic acid

α-Linolensäure

Substrate: Infobox Chemical / Summaformate search available α-Linolenic acid is a tri-unsaturated fatty acid with 18 carbon atoms. It is an -Octadeca-9,12,15-trienoic acid, abbreviated as C18: 3 and belongs to the group of omega-3 fatty acids. Several other fatty acids, however, also bear the word linolenic acid in their name, but differ chemically. Thus, for example, the gamma-linolenic acid as well as the dihomogamminolenic acid belong to the group of omega-6 fatty acids, the latter also consisting of 20 carbon atoms instead of only 18 carbon atoms. Finally, the linoleic acid, which is similar to the linolenic acid, also an omega-6 fatty acid, has a double bond less than the linolenic acid, and is thus only an octadeca-9,12-dienoic acid. The name linolenic acid derives from the Greek word linos for flax. Example of a triglyceride rich in unsaturated fatty acid residues.
