Manteau

Manteau is the generic term for the coat-like ladies' wear of the late 17th and 18th century, also called robe. In the narrower sense, he designates a certain robe, which developed around 1680 as a deshabillé. In German they called it Aufstecke-Kleid. The back and the front of the manteau were generously cut and were placed on the figure solely by folded folds. The folds were held up by a belt, partly by hidden tacks, the skirt was lifted laterally and fastened with loops over two buttons in the cross, so that the train flowed into "waterfall folds" on the floor. Underneath these were worn hip pads, around 1710 also the very first, conical Paniers. Shortly thereafter, this form of the Manteau departed in France and made the Contouche place. In England the Manteau lived under the name of Mantua in further developing forms. From around 1770 onwards, the French flavor changed the Manteau again, and they re-imported it under the name Robe à l'Anglaise.
