Merzerisation

Mercerisation is a cotton finishing process, developed by the Englishman John Mercer in the middle of the 19th century. He noted when filtering sodium hydroxide solution through a cotton cloth that the fabric swelled and then had distinctly different properties. In the case of mercerizing, cotton is exposed to concentrated sodium hydroxide solution under the action of tensile stress. The fibers swell, the cross-section changes from kidney-shaped to round and the length of the fibers decreases by up to 25%. These structural changes lead to: ▪ silk-like, wash-resistant luster, ▪ better dyeability, ▪ higher strength and ▪ better dimensional stability. Technically, the achievable properties are determined by the applied mercerization method and the influencing parameters of the test voltage, residence times and the sodium hydroxide concentration. The process increases the quality of the textiles, but is very costly. Therefore, it is only applied to fabrics of very high quality.
