Oxide

Oxide

Oxides (from Greek ὀξύς, oxýs = sharp, pointed, acid) are oxygen compounds, in which the latter has the oxidation number -II. Most oxides are formed when combustible substances react with oxygen (origin of the word oxidation). During their oxidation, they release electrons to the oxidizing agent oxygen, so that oxides are formed. Depending on the bonding partner, two groups of oxides are distinguished in chemistry: ▪ Metal oxides (these are ionic (salt - like) or covalent oxides, oxides of base metals react with water to form bases and form lyes), ▪ Nonmetallic oxides (these are highly volatile, React with water to form acids). Monoxides, dioxides, trioxides, tetroxides, pentoxides, carbon monoxide, chlorine dioxide and sulfur trioxide are distinguished according to their stoichiometric composition. The major part of the earth's crust and the earth's mantle consists of oxides (mainly from silica (quartz) and salts derived therefrom, silicates and alumina). Water also belongs to the group of oxides. Ethylene oxide is an example of an organic oxide.
