Staccato

Staccato

Staccato (from Italian staccarsi for "(to) repel, separated") is a musical articulation rule: A note is played with a special technique and thereby sounds shorter than the note value actually prescribes. The note is still noted in the note system with its full length. The character for staccato is a point above or below the note (see notation). For longer passages, Staccato can also be displayed by the word "staccato". The staccato as the keystroke on the piano is achieved by pushing the finger off the respective key. In wind instruments the corresponding tone is usually produced by an abrupt lowering or breaking of the air stream through the tongue, in the case of strings by accentuated pronation of the right hand. The more striking cancellation of the bow contact to the string (bow "jumps" into the air) takes place according to this only by the rebounding of the bow, H. Without further action of the strings. The bow then tears the string practically only briefly.
