Meaning of "Zakat" in the German dictionary

The Zakāt is the obligation for Muslims to give a certain share of their possessions to the needy and other groups of persons. It forms one of the five pillars of Islam. In addition to the term zakāt, the expression Sadaqa is sometimes used, but which is mainly a voluntary gift, in contrast to the obligatory zakāt. According to Muslim commentators, the statutory levy must be used in favor of the Muslims, while a voluntary almsgiving can also be given to non-Muslims. Die Zakāt ist die für Muslime verpflichtende Abgabe eines bestimmten Anteils ihres Besitzes an Bedürftige und andere festgelegte Personengruppen. Sie bildet eine der fünf Säulen des Islams. Neben dem Begriff Zakāt wird manchmal auch der Ausdruck Sadaqa verwendet, der aber hauptsächlich eine freiwillige Gabe bezeichnet, im Unterschied zur obligatorischen Zakāt. Laut muslimischen Kommentatoren muss die gesetzliche Abgabe zugunsten der Muslime verwendet werden, während ein freiwilliges Almosen auch an Nicht-Muslime gegeben werden kann.
