Binnacle

Bitácora

The log is a generally cylindrical or prismatic closet, which is fixed to the deck of a boat next to the wheel of the rudder, and on which the nautical needle is mounted by means of Cardan suspension, so that it is always maintained Horizontal in spite of the balances and nods of the ship. Inside it are placed magnets and the outside two spheres of sweet iron, to annul the disturbing action produced by the onboard irons and to make uniform the magnetic field that surrounds the needle, in order to make it at all times point the north magnetic. In the old days, when ships had no covered bridge, the so-called logbook used to be kept inside the log, in order to preserve it from inclement weather. Although the name has become popular in recent years due to its use in different areas, the workbook or logbook has been used since always. In recent years, sometimes the logbook is abbreviated as log. And this is how we speak for example of digital logging to refer to weblogs.
