Gábata

Gábata

Gábata Aramaic term of a place in Jerusalem, also designated under the Greek name of Lithostrōtos. It appears only in John 19:13, where the evangelist points out that Pontius Pilate "brought Jesus out, and sat in the court, in the place called Lithostrotos, in the Hebrew Gazbata." The name "Gábata" is undoubtedly an Aramaic term, since "Hebrew" in San Juan, as in other New Testament authors, refers to the Aramaic language, which was commonly spoken then in Judea. It is not a simple translation of "Lithostrotos", which more properly designates the tiled or mosaic pavement that was in the court, but also extended to the front of Pilato's praetorium, where such pavement had been laid. This is demonstrated by the custom of John, who in other parts gives Aramaic names to specific sites, which are not mere translations of the Greek. This is also evidenced by the fact that "Gábata" is derived from a root, which refers not to the type of pavement, but to the "elevation" of the site in question.
