Gangster

Gánster

A gangster or gangster is a career criminal who at some point almost invariably becomes a member of a violent and persistent criminal organization, known in English as gang. This term is generally used to refer to members of mafia organizations based in the United States, such as the American branch of the New York Cosa Nostra or the Chicago Outfit, and individual offenders such as Al Capone or Bugsy Siegel. The visibility of their activities can range from the almost undetectable, such as drug trafficking or protection, to the spectacular like the multi-million dollar robbery at the Brinks Mat stores of Heathrow Airport, UK. Other activities in which they have stood out are the game and also the traffic of alcohol during the Dry Law. Gansters often conduct their activities as a business to the extent that they offer a product or service, albeit unlawful, or sometimes employ legitimate real business as the cover of a criminal activity.
