Geoponics

Geopónicos

It is called Geoponics or Scriptores rei rusticae to the ancient Greek and Roman authors who wrote about agriculture and livestock. The Greeks generally paid less attention than the Romans to the scientific study of these subjects, which in classical times considered a branch of economics. Thus the Economic of Xenophon contains a praise of agriculture and its ethical benefits, and also much information is found in the writings of Aristotle and his pupil Theophrastus. About the same time as Xenophon, the democrat philosopher of Abdera wrote a treatise Περι Γεωργιας, frequently quoted and profusely used by later compilers of Geoponica. More attention was given to these issues in the Alexandrian period. Varron and Columela give a long list of names, among them Hierón II and Atalo III. Later, Cassius Dionysius of Utica translated and abbreviated the great work of the Carthaginian Magon, which would still be more condensed by Diophanes of Nicaea in Bithynia for the use of King Deyotaro.
