Melanoma

Melanoma

Melanoma is the generic name for melanoma or pigmented tumors ("black" + -o-ma 1 (-ομα gr.) "Tumor") or a severe variety of skin cancer, causing the majority Of deaths related to skin cancer. It is a generally cutaneous tumor, but also of the intestine and the eye (uveal melanoma) and highly invasive for its ability to generate metastases. Despite several years of extensive research, the only effective treatment is surgical resection of the primary tumor before it reaches a thickness greater than 1 mm. About 160,000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year around the world and are more common in males and white people living in regions with sunny climates. According to the World Health Organization report, about 48,000 melanoma-related deaths occur every year. Malignant melanoma is estimated to cause 75% of skin cancer deaths. In general, an individual's risk of contracting a melanoma depends on two groups of factors: intrinsic and environmental.
