Mespilus germanica

Mespilus germanica

Mespilus germanica, commonly called medlar, European loquat or European nisperero, is a fruit tree that produces a fruit called loquat. Although his Latin name refers to Germania, it originated in Asia Minor and Southeast Europe, and was taken to Germany by the Romans. Currently the Japanese nisperero crops have been replacing those of the European, which is no longer found in the markets. Mespilus germanica, comúnmente llamado níspero, níspero europeo o nisperero europeo, es un árbol frutal que produce un fruto llamado níspero. A pesar de que su nombre latino hace referencia a Germania, es originario de Asia Menor y el sudeste de Europa, y fue llevado a Alemania por los romanos. Actualmente los cultivos del nisperero japonés han ido sustituyendo a los del europeo, que ya no suele encontrarse en los mercados.
