Nereids

Nereidas

In Greek mythology, the Nereids were the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris. They were considered nymphs of the Mediterranean Sea, and as such they lived in the depths of the Mediterranean; Nevertheless, surfaced to aid sailors who sailed the protracted seas, with the Argonauts being the most famous of those who aided as they traveled in search of the golden fleece. They symbolized all that is beautiful and kind in the sea. They sang in a melodious voice and danced around their father. They are represented as beautiful girls, either with human legs or with a lion's body and a woman's head, crowned with coral branches and bearing the trident of Poseidon, whose retinue they were part of. They appear to the men mounted on dolphins, hippocampi and other marine monsters. The Greeks worshiped them on altars on beaches and cliffs, where they were offered milk, oil and honey. The most famous were Tethys, Galatea and Amphitrite.
