Ovogenesis

Ovogénesis

Oogenesis is female gametogenesis, that is, it is the development and differentiation of the female gamete or oocyte through a meiotic division. In this process a functional haploid cell and two non-functional haploid cells are produced from a diploid cell. Oogonias are formed from the primordial germ cells. They originate in the epiblast from the second week and migrate through the primitive gut to the undifferentiated gonadal area around the fifth week of gestation. Once in the ovary, they experience mitosis until the twentieth week, at which time the number of ovogonies has reached a maximum of 7 million this number is reduced to 40 000 and only 400 will be ovulated from puberty to menopause around The 50 years. From the eighth week until 6 months after birth, ovogonies differentiate into primary oocytes that enter into the prophase of meiosis and the follicle begins to form, initially called the primordial follicle. The process of meiosis is stopped in the prophase by means of inhibiting hormones until the sexual maturation.
