Payaguá

Payaguá

The payaguaes were a village of the Chaco Boreal in Paraguay of the Guaycurú family that in colonial times lived along the Paraguay River from the Great Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil and Bolivia to the province of the Chaco in Argentina. The name "payaguá" is not the one they gave themselves but the one with a pejorative nuance was given by their rivals and enemies: the Guarani. They were nomadic hunters and fishermen who dominated the Paraguay River with their canoes and harassed the Guarani who lived to the east of it, stealing their crops. They took contact with Juan de Ayolas, who on 2 February 1537 founded the port of Candelaria in their lands. The following year he was killed by these natives when returning from his expedition to the Chaco. From the founding of Asuncion they also attacked the Spaniards by becoming pirates of the Paraguay River (one of the most probable etymologies of the present place-name "Paraguay" would come from the staunch enemies of the "Payaguá": the Guarani (remember that the name " Payaguá "is the one that gave the guaraníes to this ethnic enemy of the guaraníes).
