Pendolario

Pendolario

Bartolomé Scarión de Pavia, in his excellent Military Dictionary, uses the word pendolario applied to the clerks of the senior officers of the salary as they then called the officers who administered the military treasury. These officers and their clerks or pendulums were to be little respected by the soldiers of those days of the Spanish army, when Sacrion says: "The official salary officials must attend wherever the person of the captain-general is, and so they with their pendulums They must be soft and suffering and liberal in order to dispatch with them, for soldiers do not waste time in serving their duties and they do not lose respect for not dispatching them: that close to this happens at times inconvenient because of them and because of the little Suffering of the soldiers, who must treat well the officials of the salary, under penalty of punishment according to the mannera of the crime.
