Rheum

Legaña

Legañas are a secretion of mucus crystallized and mixed with other substances, which appears at the corners of the eyelids when waking up, as a result of the secretion of the eye. It is believed that its function is to help keep the eyelids closed while sleeping. They are formed by the combination of mucus, tears, blood cells, dead epithelial cells of the eyelashes, and dust. Normally, the blinking removes this substance with tears. However, by not performing this function while sleeping, small amounts of humor are created in the corneas of the eyes, even in healthy people, especially children. Even so, the formation of large quantities of bark or the presence of pus in the legañas could be a symptom of a dry eye or other more serious eye infections such as conjunctivitis or keratitis. Young and old people can remove legas by washing with water or by simply rubbing with their fingers. However, in children it may be the case that excessive formation of legañas prevents even opening the eyes after waking up, without first washing them with water.
