Romeo and Juliet

Romeo y Julieta

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy of William Shakespeare. It tells the story of two young lovers who, despite the opposition of their families, rival each other, decide to marry clandestinely and live together; However, the pressure of that rivalry and a series of fatalities lead to the suicide of the two lovers. This relationship between its protagonists has made them the archetype of the so-called star-crossed lovers. The death of both, however, implies the reconciliation of the two families. It is one of the most popular works of the English author and, along with Hamlet and Macbeth, which has been represented more times. Although the story is part of a long tradition of tragic romances dating back to antiquity, the plot is based on the English translation of an Italian tale by Mateo Bandello by Arthur Brooke, which was based on the French translation by Pierre Boaistuau in 1559. For his part, in 1582, William Painter made a prose version from Italian and French accounts, which was published in the collection of stories Palace of Pleasure.
