Sioux

The Sioux, also called sioux, dakotas, nakotas and lakotas, are a tribe of Native Americans settled in the territories of what are now the United States and southern Canadian prairies. The Sioux were one of three groups of seven tribes that formed the Great Sioux Nation who spoke three linguistic varieties of the Sioux language, which included Lakota, Santee, and Yankee-Yankee. The name sioux is an abbreviated form of 'Nadouessioux', which was taken from Canadian French as 'Nadoüessioüak' from an earlier exonym of the Ojibwa tribe, 'na · towe · ssiwak', 'sioux'. The Sioux have also been called dakotas by anthropologists and the US government partly because for a time it was thought that the term sioux had pejorative implications.
